Absolving responsibility and emotionally gaslighting your reader base
(‼️Spoilers for Book 2‼️)
So recently, I saw a Reddit user make a comment regarding Riftan's awful and frustrating characterization, and they happen to bring up a very good point that many readers seem to overlook. I myself noticed how the author has essentially written Riftan's character to be completely faultless and absolved of taking any and all accountability for his appalling and abusive behavior, either using his traumatic upbringing and abandonment issues or his obsessive "love" for Maxi as justification for his toxicity.
This first became apparent to me while reading Chapters 118-123 of Book 2, where Riftan confines Maxi to a room and essentially rapes her repeatedly over the course of a week. (I frankly don't care whether other readers interpret the scene as anything other than rape. By any reasonable definition, what Riftan does to Maxi falls under sexual assault) What stood out to me, however, was not just the assault itself but how the narrative responds to it.
Afterward, once Riftan finishes, Maxi's inner monologue expresses genuine frustration and bitterness toward Riftan. She reflects on the emotional neglect she endured throughout much of Book 2, his refusal to communicate with her, the way he consistently kept her at arm's length, and, in that exact moment, the fact that he had just forced himself on her. She feels that Riftan has treated her unfairly, and frankly, she's completely justified in feeling that way.
The problem is that the story almost immediately undercuts those feelings by shifting the focus to Riftan's suffering instead. Rather than allowing Maxi's anger and hurt to stand on their own, the narrative pivots to Riftan admitting to the miserable state he was in after she left for the Mage Tower. Suddenly, the emphasis is no longer on what he had done to Maxi, but on how deeply Maxi's departure affected him. As a result, Maxi ends up feeling guilty for allegedly not understanding Riftan's perspective, even though Book 2 repeatedly shows her trying to do exactly that. Time and time again, she reaches out to him, attempts to get him to talk, and tries to understand why he keeps avoiding her. The author has the audacity to frame her frustration as impatience, yet perceptive readers know that Riftan has never been one to willingly communicate openly to anyone, not even with his own wife. Maxi is effectively forced into confrontation because Riftan refuses to engage with her otherwise.
What frustrates me is that the scene ultimately feels less like an interrogation of Riftan's behavior and more like an explanation for it. His pain becomes the lens through which his actions are viewed, softening the impact of what he has done. Meanwhile, Maxi's own suffering is diminished. Not only is she expected to carry the guilt of Riftan's despair and resentment, but the story largely ignores the fact that she left Anatol in the first place because she genuinely believed she was protecting him, his reputation, and the territory itself from a potentially devastating conflict. Despite this, Riftan repeatedly interprets her actions as selfish abandonment. He accuses her of leaving him behind, and the narrative never meaningfully challenges his unfair assumption. At most, he sheepishly admits that he was wrong, but he never truly apologizes, nor does he fully acknowledge the emotional burden he placed on Maxi by making her feel responsible for his suffering.
That's ultimately one of my biggest points of contention with Riftan's character as well as the dynamic in their relationship. Every time Maxi has a legitimate reason to be angry with Riftan, the story finds a way to redirect the audience's sympathy back toward him. Instead of holding him accountable, it prioritizes explaining why he acted the way he did, often at the expense of Maxi's perspective. By the end, Riftan's pain is given center stage, while Maxi's is expected to quietly make room for it.
Part 2 of this maybe i'll make more bcos i am so happy so many people agreed on my last pet peeve post
Ok for this one this is specific but i also don't have examples of this but it's whenever the ML becomes a father by the end of manhwa and if he has a son, he would start treating the kid like he's a love rival for FL's love and would get jealous if FL shows the son more attention
I don't really have any examples for this because so far all the rofan manhwas i've read have their MLs become good dads or they would just have daughters but this is just based of novel leaks I've heard
I think Heinrey from Remarried Empress did this with his son in the novel
And from How to Get My Husband on My Side/How to Win My Husband Over, i think Izek fought with his son Aloysha for Ruby's attention and affection (grown ass man wtf r u doing)
I heard originally this is how Dylan from Taming of The Tyrant treated his son too in the novel, not sure if it's changed for the manhwa (i only read the manhwa)
(Since i don't have example picture i'll just throw in a random reaction pic)
If i'm wrong abt the novel spoilers pls do tell me and if you have any examples of this trope feel free to talk about it here
Ok not sure how it goes but is there anyone in the community willing to share more criticizing thoughts on How to Get My Husband On My Side/How to Win My Husband Over?
I'm not a really big fan of this manhwa outside of Siru's early artstyle and a few characters (Ellen, Freya and Lorenzo) so i'm interested to hear others' thoughts that is less in a positive light about this manhwa 🙏🙏

Could anyone recommend me a manhwa that is similar to the Villainess Lives Twice/The Villainess Lives Again
Here's my requirements lol:
A plot centered around a political game
The story balances well between character, plot and romance development
ML that has actually depth and complexity to him
Characters aren't made to be just fodder for the FL and ML and actually have their own depth to their writing
Also this is a sign for everyone to go read this manhwa lol i thought there would be more people talking about it when i first read it only to find there's little people who enjoyed the story or people who didn't enjoy the story because it's not romance centered (or too long)
Ok kinda wanna clarify before it escalates but i reread the chapter with that photo of family tree making Ayla and Gareth and Varkas darker than they are and it turns out it is a scanlation problem considering i checked other scanlations on the same chapter
Idk why the hell the first scanlation did that 😭
BUT i am still standing by my opinion that Thalia's still pretty fucking racist

reasons why it was extremely stupid for Senevier to let her daughter be abused by maids:
1.) At that time Thalia was the only child between her and the Emperor which means in the event of her husband's death, Thalia would be her only horse in the running for the crown. Had Senevier already been pregnant with Arthros, there would be no guarantee he would survive to the age of 18. 30 % of infants died before their first birthday, and a further 20% would never reach adulthood. In a world where a woman gives birth to 23 children and 16 died, the spare held much more importance than one would assume. Should the spare turn into the heir, then you wouldn't want the next ruler of the Empire against you.
2.) For a woman in the medieval world their children are what gives them power. The life expectancy of kings is not high, he could meet an early end because of illness, die in a military campaign or become the victim in an assassination, which would make you a widow with the whole court turned against you. Or worse: one day your husband might grow bored of you and cheat on you like he had cheated on his previous wife. Once you have fallen out of his favour anything could happen to you. Divorce, exile, beheading. By losing your lover's interest you are also losing his protection and once you lose it, the countless enemies you have made will smell the blood in the water and enact revenge. It is important to have loyal children in respectable positions and clever marriage alliances who would support you and create a pushback, if necessary with their husband's army and the pope behind them.
3.) The abuse was lowering Thalia's value. As a potential heir, as a bride, as her brother's knight or her mother's pawn. Prolongued childhood abuse can lead to disabilities and mental issues. Who would support a histronic princess with anger managment issues over her angelic sister who is the very image of the late queen that everyone loved? Had the abuse continued, Thalia's beauty would have faded before it could bloom. Who would want to marry an ill-tempered ugly brat? Nobody wants a wife who has a bad personality and bad looks. Senevier could tie powerful allies to her, had she invested in Thalia's education and looks. A daughter is not worthless. A daughter means powerful marriage alliances. It means having a concealed weapon everyone will underestimate. She could have groomed her child into her tool, into an obedient, intelligent woman that would outwit, outplay, outcharm everyone to help her family reach the top. Like a lannister queen Senevier should have cared about the cohesion of the family. Imagine Thalia and Arthros inseparable, as close as the twins Gareth and Ayla. Arthros had confessed he had been longing for sibling love. Would Senevier rather the future king started looking somewhere else to fill that hole? Would she want someone outside of her family who would take advantage of such longing and through this connection gain power over the future king?
4.) It's bad PR. If Thalia looks malnutrited and ill, Senevier cannot play the good queen caring for her happy daughter. The image they made would not look like a picture perfect family. Especially when Thalia was still small and cute, Senevier should have milked that situation for what it's worth.
Alternatively she could have played the caring mother doting on her sickly daughter. The royal children lost their mother, and she, a mother might lose her child to a mysterious illness. She would compete with her stepchildren for the sympathy of the public and steal their spotlight with her dramatic act. Since the child mortality rate is high, the tragedy of the new queen would feel personal and relateable to the commoners who went through the same. The people would hold back with their criticism of the affair and remarriage and instead would try to make mother and child (who will die anyway they think) feel more welcome.
Then when Senevier feels like the story was getting old and she had profited enough off it, she could have made a public reveal of the servant's abuse and pretended like she was also a victim and garner sympathy. People are always weak to the suffering of a beautiful child. It would also give her an excuse to replace the servants who were loyal to the old queen with servants who are loyal to her.
5.) It's frankly insulting and shows Senevier has not as much control as she likes. The servants are treating Thalia like an extension of Senevier, why shouldn't she? The bullying of Talia is a personal attack against her and should be paid tenfold. They dared to damage her possession after all.
Not sure if this is only a problem in the manhwas i've read but i don't like it when they pull the "prettiest woman in all of the empire/kingdom" And it always gotta be someone with blonde hair
OGFL's in floral dresses who did nothing wrong except be female and indirectly oppose the FL's goals, because in the OI world, two sisters can't be happy at the same time, the fanbase must choose one as their favorite and hate the other.
Kim Suji, Author of Under the Oak tree and Forgotten field, has a big problem.
Kim Suji is just fucking JJK's Megumi.
A lot of fucking potential waste so many times, because when they write some things are really good but when they write another things (people who has read their novels know what I mean) is absolutely trash.
Their biggest sin is they forget they are writing a fucking ROFAN NOVEL, you know ROMANCE and FANTASY NOVEL. They try to write reality just to
1. Fill their ego. As "Look I am the only one who writes dark and deep novels, I am depicting the reality of medieval times"
When their novels aren't that deep and just uncomfortable. If people want to read reality, they just read a Biography of past royals.
2. Cause Shock. Those SA and the ambiguity of some are just there to make people talk about the novel, after all bad propaganda is still propaganda and people will go to see if it is so bad as they say.
I genuinely think Kim Suji can write, because there are moments where they can put emotions in their text very well and do it in a simple and easy to read way, nevertheless Kim Suji decides not to do it. Without mention after the fiasco is Under the Oak tree Goodreads reviews you would think they would have learned but no.
I mean why would they? Under the Oak tree for some reason is still recommended as one of the best Manhwa and novels, with excellent numbers and a fandom that defends UTOT as it is the Bible.
Now with Spoon being the artist for the forgotten meadow the story will repeat themself when we reach the point of "OMG Kim Suji did it again" and "No, no what are you saying? This is not SA, that's how it was in that time and she was pressure and he said the words"
Yeah because Kim Suji sometimes doesn't see men as men but as animals. Like what do you mean with "Say me to stop now because I won't stop after this" again Broo, what are they? Fucking Dogs in heat?
As I said before, Yes, it was SA. Yeah Thalia was pressured in her fragile stage of mind but still she did it and used her power and her higher rank on him, saying he can't say no because it is his duty. Both of them were disgusted and traumatized by that, it was fucking messy first time that.... We don't talk again about that because they pretend nothing happened and they started fucking like rabbits. The only Good thing it was a few chapters and the story is not smutty before and after that.
So we have that scene just to make the reader uncomfortable as the characters were... I understand that point, but Kim Suji forgot an important point.... THIS IS A ROFAN NOVEL, PEOPLE ARE READING BECAUSE THEY WANT TO ROOT FOR THE COUPLE, NO TO WISH THEY HAVE NEVER MET. They are trying to sell a mid apple juice in a Lemonade convention.
Ok quick question but is it this like a scanlation error or is it the same in the raws but in this panel of the family tree it shows the twins and varkas being dark skinned compared to the emperor, senevier and thalia....
Considering what thalia says later on to varkas i wouldn't be surprised if it's actually intentional 😭

I finally gotten around the forgotten field and i really don't get the hype at all, i don't find any of the characters likeable save for Ayla and Athros and I don't find the plot that interesting
I would rather reread all the books i've hated to read in the past than continue reading the forgotten field
How it deadass feels when I hate a certain manhwa but i keep seeing people making ai content using the panels that I can't help but feel bad for said manhwa especially the artists
