THE HUNGER GAMES - The Songbird's Preamble

A series of stories taking place between the 25th and 53rd Hunger Games, with an emphasis on Snow's family and rise to power. I cannot vouch for the quality of a lot of these stories because they were written when I was younger, but more on that later.

Twenty-four Games and 552 bodies dead on the ground. The Capitol now expects more than senseless killing, craving a show that ends with a star. Head Gamemaker Coriolanus Snow has kept them entertained thus far, and with a new trick up his sleeve, he'll dazzle them once more.

Notes: You can very much tell I went through a mental health crisis while writing the Games portion, and I ultimately abridged a significant chunk of it. I wound up taking two characters from this and writing an independent fic of them in the Games with a different cast. I don't recommend reading this.

A COMMON DEFENSE

The shadow of a faded star gets trampled on by a man in black. He sends screams through the night but they're silenced by the lost. Hell's finally frozen over and Coriolanus Snow steps out of the dust with vengeance. The 52nd Games are hardly his priority, but perhaps they'll distract Panem from his approaching storms. 

It's about time the Districts served their penance...

Notes: Overall, I enjoy this one. The main concern is that the District Four Female, Atlantis Seasbane, deals with a lot of struggles regarding self-harm and suicidal thoughts, and I unfortunately can't write her out because she has an important role in the story. Take care if you read this one, because there are lots of good moments in my opinion

GENERAL WELFARE

"Well then, what's your name, dear?" The escort asks him. "Shae," he says, still shaking. "Shae van Amstel." "Van Amstel?" The escort raises her brow. "You wouldn't happen to be related to Nim over here now, would you?" "She's my twin sister," Shae says, doing his best to remain calm. Nim, on the other hand, doesn't know how to feel. Angry that he was so willing to throw his life away? Jealous that he got the choice? Happy that now she won't be completely alone if- or rather, when she dies? Her brother continues, "Last year, she saved my life. I intend to return the favor."

District Four's Academy has been reduced into dust. Come the 53rd Games, untrained and uncivilized Nim van Amstel must make do with ashes. I’m sorry, Clementine.” But it’s loud and clear when he shouts, “I volunteer.” The butterfly lady’s eyes widen and she stares at Chandler with bewilderment. “You… what?” “I volunteer,” he repeats, ambling down the same aisles Calathea walked with poise. “I volunteer as Tribute.” Everybody stares at him. He’s never gotten this much attention in his entire life and he doesn’t like it. They whisper as he moves past them, shout once he stands next to Calathea. (He sees Charlie at the edge of one of the rows. He can’t will himself to look for too long.)

Chandler Whitt is never unbound from his duties. Even if the 94th Games are meant to be a continuation of his prison, they may just be what sets him free.

NUMQUAM CERTUS

She doesn’t feel her legs as they lift her from her seat and lead her to the stage because it was her name that was just announced to the district. It was her death that was just announced. She hardly hears her brothers screaming but she knows that they are. She knows that they’re terrified. Winslet is bereft, trying not to cry but probably failing. The past two months, she’s been searching for a sign that her mother’s still with her, a signal that she’s still meant to be an undertaker despite her new discomfort with the subject matter. This is the exact opposite of that. As much as Winslet misses Mother, she’s never once thought about joining her in an early grave. She doesn’t want to die; she knows this with conviction. But people aren’t meant to kill other people, especially not people like her.

After the unexpected death of her mother, there is very little that Winslet Elowen is certain of. For example, how is a mortician like herself supposed to win the 96th Hunger Games while keeping her hands clean?

This year, I was presented with sweet baby Winslet, the 16 year old mortician from District 7 going through an identity crisis courtesy of my friend, Neb. I really don't know what possessed me when I wrote literally any of the things that happened in the story, but now we all get to hold hands and deal with the consequences of probably my favorite piece of my writing.

LONELY IS THE MUSE

She didn’t beat the system, she just became a part of it and she’s sick of deluding herself into thinking anybody is benefitting from this besides Taffeta. People at the casino are still going to be assholes to their families regardless of if they win or Cordura does. She was young and naive thinking she could actually help people somehow, but really she’s just moved from her father’s cage to one of her own creation. She’s trapped and there’s no freedom in sight. The more she goes to the casino, the more she earns. The more she earns, the more Taffeta benefits. The more Taffeta benefits, the greedier she gets. The greedier she gets, the more she wants Cordura to go to the casino.  It’s a vicious cycle, an all-consuming ouroboros. 

Cordura Faux has never been lucky. Not when her family home became a warzone, not when her lover was a monster in disguise, and definitely not when she was reaped for the 97th Hunger Games.

Beyond that, why are you here?" Is it bad that Raptor doesn't necessarily know? He'd be lying if he said it's to erase the "stain" his dad left on the family and appease his mom. Truly, Raptor Voinov's here for himself. He's here to fight in Panem's largest boxing ring and come out a learned champion. He's here to show that he's not the average Two brute that lets his light dim; he's better than all of them as well as anybody else.

Raptor Voinov is never satisfied. He wages wars against his peers, forever in search of a challenge, yet he swears he'll never become the monster District Two's painted him as. The 99th Hunger Games seek to prove him wrong.

She always failed that task, letting Rio fall into her arms again and again. Just the memory makes Rio let out a subtle moan. Noticing it, Agatha asks. “It could be nice, right? I just need these witches to get me to the end.” She lets her pinky intertwine with Rio’s, which makes her unexpectedly shiver. “So, you tell me — what happens next?”

Not anymore she is… Vi looks down at Caitlyn’s lips whilst she lifts up her chin and rubs her cheeks with her thumbs, pulling her closer. Vi knows what this means. God, Mari misses her. Not as much as Shauna does, obviously, but she would much rather have Jackie here in her place. I didn’t mean for everything to turn out the way it did with Javi, then Ben, then everybody else, but it’s still my fault. She also might not like the room because she was technically kidnapped and is now trapped inside of it — either or.  There’s no point in putting off her reveal. Using her free hand, Charlotte pulls down her hood. “That’s very rude, Natalie,” she tuts.

Charlotte Matthews hasn’t seen Natalie Scatorrcio in over twenty years but their tether is just as strong as it was in the Wilderness. She knows when Natalie’s in trouble and she knows that she can save her.
