Any beginner to astrology has seen the ascendant be described as the placement that shows how we meet the world and are perceived by it. Then again, you often see the midheaven described as the public you, the You in society. Naturally that can lead to confusion as to where the difference between those two is but I think thereâs a relatively easy way to set them apart: The ascendant is natural, inherent, and in a way passive. The midheaven is conscious, cultivated, more active.Â
The ascendant is often nicknamed the âmaskâ, but it goes so much further than that. It is your philosophy of life, your worldview, your natural and conditioned day-to-day behavior. You can well be conscious of it, but whether you are or not does not change that this is how you naturally carry yourself. There needs to be no deeper thought behind it because itâs one of the most natural states to be in. For comparison, the sun is more conscious, directed action and the moon more reactive action; the rising is just everyday behavior whether you are aware or not. With that it is of course how you meet the world, since itâs how you navigate it on a day-to-day basis. People will see it when meeting you because itâs just the âenergyâ you give off.
The midheaven on the other hand is how you want and try to present yourself, especially when it matters to you. Think about meeting an important person or facing an authority: You donât necessarily put on a show and act completely out of character, but you are much more aware of and concerned with how you present yourself. The midheaven is how you want your reputation to be, itâs the first impression you think is best. When you care about how you come across, your midheaven comes out. When you try to impress, you try to act out the best parts of your midheaven. For example, Iâm a Libra midheaven and Sagittarius rising and Iâm generally a very carefree, bold, and exaggerating person (sagittarius), but when it matters to me, the things I care most about presenting are being proper, chic, charming, diplomatic, a social butterfly with good taste and superb manners (Libra). Your midheaven dictates how you consciously put yourself out in the world, how you try to impress, and what you want your public association to be.
The ascendant is more personal, it is âthis is how I am and act and people can see itâ, whereas the midheaven says âthis is how I want to be perceived and remembered, I make a conscious choice that people see thisâ.
