With the change to the second verse of the opening and ending songs in Kuuga with episode 34, I feel it's a good time to talk about something I've been noticing with it, which is this overarching atmosphere of hopelessness or inevitability.
The grongi could kill FAR more people even than they are, they're just constrained by the rules of their game. Nothing the humans do could stop them. Nothing the humans do can stop their game. The police can coordinate, establish curfews, advance their weaponry, look for patterns, but it doesn't matter. They're always a step behind, even when pushing the absolute limits of their knowledge and efforts and their own physical health. They are being outpaced and the grongi aren't even trying. Only Kuuga has a chance.
And Kuuga... Godai is one person. The police can help him, but he's the only one who can fight and kill the grongi. He cannot afford to be incapacitated or late or just living his own life, because if he is, people will die. He's ridiculously outnumbered, and on top of everything, the amadam is making its slow crawl through his nervous system, altering his body, taking root in his mind. It's only a matter of time before he becomes something he's not. And the only reason the humans stand a chance at all is because he has control over his power.
Why, then? Why fight when it's nothing but a march to your own end? Because you have to. You have to fight. You have to live. You have to make that choice even when everything is stacked against you- especially then. You need to believe in something.
