"exactly!" she groans, trying to push you further. "so, go!"

still, something in your body just wouldn't let you. you were sure if it was just nerves, cold feet, or maybe even something inside you telling you it wasn't worth it.

ah, yes. the point of overthinking that's accompanied by self-doubt.

eishia keeps a stable hand on your upper and forearm. "it's okay... he might get a little loud, but -"

before she could finish her sentence, the metal door swung open - and there stood august.

sewing pins sat between his lips, measuring tape draped around his neck as his goggles slowly slide down his forehead.

maybe he was working?

he tilts his head, removing the sewing pins before grinning widely. "hey! whatcha standin' out here for?!"

riyo and eishia both step aside, with eishia waving her brother bye before the two walk off.

now you've got no choice but to follow through without support. great.

"weird..." august murmurs, "still doesn't answer why yer campin' outside my door, though!"

scratching the side of your head awkwardly, you rest your hand on a beaded necklace around your neck - made by august, of course.

who said his artistry had to stop at clothing?

snapping in the middle of your face brings you back.

"hello?" august teases, poking your forehead. "anyone home?!"

giggling, you slap his hand away. "quit it, august!"

"what's up with you?" he asks, rounding you like a curious kid. "you feelin' sick?"

clearing your throat, you grab him by the shoulders to stop him from walking circles around you. "i have a question. okay?" he nods slowly. "okay...?" "and it's totally fine if you say no -" "spit it out!" he demands, plucking your forehead this time.

"ouch..." you frown, rubbing the spot. "i just..." puffing up your cheeks, you sigh. "could we maybe - please - date?"

you hadn't noticed you'd closed your eyes when you said it. but when you opened them, august was scratching his head and looked confused.

"huh?" he hums. kissing your teeth, "can we date? like, officially?"

before you know it, he's laughing enough to just barely shake the walls nearby. "aren't we already dating?"

this time, you're the one confused. "huh?"

"yeah!" he insists, "i kinda already told enjin and..." he pauses, fixing the goggles on his head. "...almost everyone else that we already were?"

"did you tell riyo and eishia?" you ask, pinching your brow. he nods. "yeah!"

those dumbasses made you do this for no reason.

"wait, so..." he says. "are we dating or not? 'cause if not, it's kinda too late-!" "yes," you interrupt. "yes, we're dating."

Instead you were sitting on your bedroom floor with your back to your shared bed, body hunched over and cradling a screaming little bundle. Both of your faces streaked with tears, looking completely and utterly drained. Wakatoshi guessed that you must’ve been here for hours, desperately pleading for your little one to close her eyes. 

Your voice hitches, tired, helpless eyes looking up to find your husband. “She just won’t stop, I’ve t-tried everything.”

The reddened baby lets out a shrill cry, so high-pitched you're afraid it hurts. 

“I've fed her, changed her, rocked her - everything, Toshi. I’ve even-”

Wakatoshi interrupts silently, sinking down to your height and rubbing a callused thumb against your cheek, smooshing tears into your skin. “It is okay. I am here now to help.” His hair is still damp with sweat - remnants from his late-night training that had him kept way past overtime. And his muscles are aching and sore - wanting no more than to take a hot shower and then cuddle up with his family in bed. 

But he doesn’t, not yet. Because you're here, struggling. Doing your best for his family. 

So instead he scoops the screaming baby from your arms, eyes softening at her red, spent face. 

He stands up and sways, pressing your squirming child to his chest. It seems to settle her a little. Ever so slightly. “You should sleep, I can take care of her now.” Toshi moves to dip a hand under your armpit, gently helping you get up from off the floor. 

You steady your exhausted body upwards, wiggling your arm out of his soft grip in protest. “No, no- but there's still dinner,” Your breaths come shaky and disoriented. “M’ almost done, it just needs like - ten more minutes.” 

Wakatoshi’s lips part. Here you’ve been, wholly exhausted, tending to his shrieking daughter and simultaneously keeping the household upright while also cooking dinner just so he had something hot to come home to?

He is so very grateful, right to the bottom of his heart. But what you need right now is sleep - not to worry about anyone or anything else. He can’t have his beautiful, perfect wife running on empty, can he?

Your husband murmurs your name softly, still rocking your hiccuping child in his arms and pushes you to sit down on the bed cautiously, careful to not upset you while you're in such a fragile state.

Wakatoshi’s fingers ghost your hairline. 

“Toshi…” You lean into his touch, hot, tired tears threatening to fall from your eyes again. “I really tried, I just can’t-”

“You’ve tried enough. And you have done well.” He places a soothing kiss to your temple. It eases your headache. “It is time for you to rest now, I’ll take care of everything else.” 

“But-”

He raises his palm outwards to stop you from speaking. “It’s okay, you don’t have to explain. I am sorry I was out so late, I should've come home earlier.” 

“S’fine,” You rub your eyes with the back of your weary hand, noticing that your baby’s wet cries have died down to just the occasional little sniffle. 

“It is not fine. I should do better at taking care of you both, just as you do.”

You shrug, eyes darting down to the floor, not knowing where to look instead.

“Thank you for being so strong.” He tips your chin upwards so your eyes meet to his, that comforting, serious stare that you’ve always been able to indulge in. “Now please get into bed, I do not wish for you to miss any more sleep than you already have. 

Your newborn's breathing evens out, settled by the soft thump of Wakatoshi’s heartbeat and your gentle voices pattering back and forth. 

You nod, sniffle a few times, and start peeling back the covers with the help of your husband. “But what if she wakes up again?”

He drapes the heavy covers over your body, dusting stray hairs away from your face. “Then I will deal with it. You need to sleep, or at least rest your eyes.” 

Smiling tiredly with a small frown creased in between your eyebrows, you have no other choice but to listen to him, even if you tried, you don’t think your body would let you get out of bed now.  

You watch Wakatoshi wordlessly as he switches off the bedside lamp and creeps out of the room as stealthily as he's able to. (Which is not very much - he’s a big man.) 

You can’t help but keep your eyes open, body and brain waiting for the sound of the nursery door to open. When you do hear it though, your body instantly relaxes a little. You finally let yourself sink into the covers, pulling the plush blankets up past your face so only your eyes are visible. 

The last memory you have of that night is the low creak of the bed frame as a warm body eases into the covers beside you, strong, steady arms enveloping you in their hold.

the plan had been simple: get you flowers, open the door for you, drive you to the restaurant you liked. sakusa had this game-plan of his memorized ever since you said yes to him four — now five — days ago.

he wrote it on a piece of paper, step by step, and kept it in his wallet sleeve in case he forgets, he repeated it to himself three times in the mirror this afternoon before he left the house to pick you up, and he said it to himself one last time in the car before texting you that he’d arrived.

he memorized it.

and still, he messed it up.

the streets are empty and the evening is quiet.

“sorry … for this.”

his words feel like they’ve been the first to be spoken all night.

on the snowy concrete just below your feet, there’s a few drops of blood making its presence known loudly against the whiteness of the snow, the drops scatter sporadically, and near it, there’s a button or two from your coat.

you sit next to sakusa on the cold steps, it’s a quiet night, and it’s not snowing anymore, but the soft bed of the cold flurry it left behind made for a beautiful evening.

you let your head fall slightly on his shoulder, “for what?”

you can feel him stiffen immediately under your touch, and he coughs, shy, and looks to the side.

it makes you smile a little bit — his efforts of hiding his expressions — it’s not like you can see him anyway with that big makeshift ice-pack covering his face.

“sorry for the bad date.” he clears his throat, more clearly now, a little louder too, but his tone almost sounds disappointed. “… and sorry for ruining your coat.”

you lift your head up from his shoulder, frowning, and you turn to face him, “it’s not a bad date.”

he doesn’t say anything to that. instead, he keeps his head turned slightly away from you, but his shoulders fall a bit when you move away from him.

“if anything, i should be the one apologizing.” you mutter lowly, “i’m the reason you got hurt.”

sakusa huffs slightly. a second pausing in the air as he refuses to return the look you give him, and finally, he puts down the “ice pack” from his cheek, and looks at you.

his cheek is scratched lightly, nothing too deep, just a red mark that’ll probably resolve itself in a few days, but his lower lip though — the culprit of the blood stained snow — is undeniably busted, still bleeding slightly, and making him wince at the sudden loss of pressure.

“don’t say stupid things.” he tells you, and if it makes him sound cold, he swears he’s not trying to be.

he just doesn’t know what else there is to say.

the truth is — it is a bad date.

he forgot your flowers, almost hit you with the car door, and now, the two of you are missing your dinner reservation because he got himself injured twenty minutes into the night.

it’s not fair, he thinks. half the things he wants to say to you, he can’t. half the things he wants to do, he messes up.

you make him fumble on his words, tongue tied, speechless, literally. you make him write things down on notes so he won’t forget them or practice on bathroom mirrors or worry in his car outside your doorstep.

he is the most capable man in his team, he is the sharpest, the most composed, his teammates and coach all count and look up to him.

but for some reason, one night with you, and it all washes away.

he doesn’t know what to say to you, he forgets things, and he falls face first flat on the hard concrete ground twenty minutes into your first date.

don’t say stupid things.

“you really won’t let me take you to the hospital?” you put your hand on his knee, turning even more to your side so you can face him better.

you have half a mind to put your other hand on his injured cheek but you don’t want to hurt him more than how he already does.

“it’s not as bad as it looks.” and as he says that, he winces, the gust of wind suddenly hitting his busted lip a testament to his bad luck tonight.

sakusa wants to kick himself, if there ever would be an appropriate time to act cooler than how he actually was, it would definitely not be now.

you don’t look so convinced, but sakusa wouldn’t know, he’s still only limiting himself to looking at you briefly before shifting his glance to something behind you or beside you or above you.

“hm. and it doesn’t hurt?” you cross your arms.

he shakes his head, “no. it doesn’t.” (it does.)

you raise a brow, “and you wouldn’t happen to be lying to me right now so i don’t take you to the emergency room?”

he shakes his head again, “i’m not.” (he is.)

you give him a look.

listen — sakusa already knows that he’s a bad date, but come on! he has been planning on asking you to dinner with him since the first week he’s known you, he’s been worrying about this evening since the second you agreed to it, and he’s been kicking himself in the head ever since the night began.

he’d rather bleed out on this disgustingly dirty porch step than admit that he’s a date so bad he can turn an evening meant for dinner into a night at the emergency room.

he doesn’t want you to think that he can be so bad like that. (is it too soon to ask you out for dinner again?)

you still look frustrated at his answers. but at least, he’s looking at you now.

you let out a big sigh, shoulders falling, and suddenly, you clap your hands together loudly as you straighten up.

“then i have an idea.” you say, and sakusa furrows his brows at the sudden change in the atmosphere.

you give him a prompting grin. “heads or tails.”

and it catches him so off guard, he says aloud, “what?”

you dig for a coin in your coat, “i’ll flip a coin and if it lands on heads, we go to the emergency room, no arguments, no fusses, no nothing.”

he frowns at that.

“but.” you tell him, and your grin gets wider as you show him the dime laid out on your palm, “if it’s tails, we go to my apartment, and i’ll try to fix you up there.”

his frown falls almost immediately into something else.

one night out with you and he’s already bleeding heavily and injured, and now you wanna take him back to your apartment?

were you trying to kill him?

“heads or tails, omi.”

he blinks at your words. and once again, he finds himself saying aloud, “what?”

you shoot him a funny look, your eyebrows slightly raising as your lips curve upward into a crooked smile.

you say, teasing, “if you don’t know; heads is the part of the coin with the head of the person showing on it and tails is the–”

sakusa grumbles loudly, cutting you off mid-sentence, making sure you see him roll his eyes at you, and he nudges you slightly with his foot.

he mutters, albeit under his breath, and he tries to hide it, but you can always tell when he’s smiling, “i know what a goddamned head is.”

you shrug, your grin wider now when you see his mood lighten up a bit.

“do you know what a goddamned tail is?”

sakusa huffs out an amused sigh. the smile on his face a lot more prominent now, and you only wonder slightly if it hurts him when he does it.

his shoulders fall as he’s defeated, “just take me to the emergency room.”

you let out a short laugh and the night doesn’t seem so quiet anymore.

you fall back against his shoulder, “ah, omi, are you just saving the opportunity to be invited into my apartment for our next date?”

there’s a choking sound to be heard in the air.

his face almost feels like it’ll erupt into flames by how casually you just said that, a hot pink hue creeping up from his neck to nose all the way to the tips of his ears. he blames it on the cold, and immediately, he presses the “icepack” back against his cheek.

sakusa stands up suddenly from the porch step, “let’s go now.”

and just like he said, he strides away, faster than what would usually be safe on snow-covered pavement.

“omi, not so fast!” you yell after him, rising from your own seat and following his pace, “you might fall again and hurt the other side of your face and atsumu will think i beat you up on our first date.”

he walks faster.

“i can go to the hospital myself, please don’t follow me.”

“that’s ridiculous! let me take care of you!”

he trips on his feet slightly as you say that and his heart feels like it would’ve fell from his mouth had he not caught himself before falling again.

you really were trying to kill him, weren’t you?

maybe this date doesn’t feel so bad after all.

and, is it too soon if he asks you to come have dinner with him again?

your heart stutters. “she said that?”

“mm.” he shrugs like it’s nothing, but his cheeks are turning pink. “said the tomatoes grew sweeter this year, and she hasn’t yelled at that godforsaken neighbor in weeks. thinks it’s ‘cause of you.”

you snort. “i’ve been here, what, three times total?”

“apparently that’s all it took,” he says, serious now. “she likes you. really likes you.”

you raise a brow. “that surprising?”

kita sits up straighter, suddenly full of conviction. “yes. it is. you don’t get it — gran doesn’t like anyone. she’s sweet to their face, sure, but the moment they’re out the door it’s all ‘that one’s got no sense,’ or ‘he dresses like his mama never taught him how.’”

you laugh, leaning on his shoulder. “she said those things about the twins, didn’t she?”

“whispered it while ‘samu could still hear, too.” he shakes his head, sounding in awe. “but you? she lets you sit in her recliner. she makes you iced tea from scratch, not the jug mix.”

“boiled the leaves herself,” kita says, holding up a hand like he’s swearing in court. “haven’t seen her do that since my uncle’s birthday. not even for me.”

your foot slips off his lap, and he catches it again without missing a heartbeat.

“i mean it,” he murmurs, quieter now. “she loves you. and to me that’s… big. real big.”

your voice softens. “you care what she thinks?”

“course i do.” he looks a little embarrassed now, gaze not-so-subtly traveling down to your ring finger. “the woman raised me. it matters. a whole bunch.”

there’s a short pause. the cicadas kick up louder in the bushes right on cue, and the last bit of sun stretches long shadows across the porch.

“you know,” you say, voice as soft as the dying light, “you keep rubbing my foot like that and i might have to actually marry you out of obligation.”

kita huffs out a laugh, hands working at your calves now. “might?” he echoes. “actually..? even after all the things i’ve done for you today?”

“all you’ve done for me?” you push his face away with your palm, smiling ear to ear despite yourself. “i was the one who peeled the grapefruit. didn’t hear me complain when it squirted me in the eye did you?”

he grins. “my brave soldier.”

“damn straight.”

“but really,” he starts again, thumb pausing at your heel, “you ever think about it?”

“foot rubs?” you deadpan. “dream about ‘em.”

kita chuckles again, the joy you are to be around. “marriage,” he clarifies. “with me.”

“sometimes.”

he leans back onto his elbows, looking out toward the yard where the hummingbird’s darting back toward the fruit plate, stealing a melon slice.

“i think about it,” he confesses. “think about what flavor cake you’d want, if you’d wear your hair up or down. think about you in white. had a few dreams about that last one.”

you look down at your hands, gather them in your lap. “you’re too good at that.”

“too good at what?”

“sayin’ stuff that makes my heart feel all wobbly.”

he laughs, your favorite sound. “think your heart’s wobbly now — wait ‘til i get down on one knee.”

you stretch your toes against the inside of his thigh, playful. “if i was mrs. kita, you’d still be good to me if i hogged the covers, let hair go down the drain?”

“when you’re mrs. kita.” he corrects, palming your thigh now. “ain’t stopped me before.”

“those are boyfriend duties,” you say, hand over your heart. “sure you could handle wife-level chaos?”

“darlin’,” he says, nosing your cheek before he kisses it, “i’d carry your chaos around in my shirt pocket if it meant i got to call you mine.”

you groan. “enough of that, shin.”

his eyes crinkle at the corners. “hmm? of what?”

“i’m gonna start doodling hearts on my skin around your last name like we’re in middle school.”

he leans in, tucks the stray hairs from your face behind your ears. “go on and do it. looks good on you.”

“what does?”

his voice dips. “my name.”

you reach forward and tug at the hem of his cutoff, an attempt to cover up the shade of red you’ve quickly turned into within the past couple of minutes. “…can’t believe i’m fallin’ for a man who can’t cut even sleeves.”

“can’t believe you’re gonna marry him,” he teases.

you kick at him, yet you don’t bother denying it.

then you pad barefoot into cool floorboards, screen doors clattering shut behind you.

in the kitchen, the fan spins overhead. the scent of old wood and lemon cleaner clings to everything, comforting in a way you never expected a home to be.

you lean against the counter to rinse the peach-sticky plate at the sink, water running cold.

“dry towel’s hangin’ on the oven,” a voice calls.

you glance back.

his grandmother’s at the table, sorting green beans into a big metal bowl. her hands move like clockwork — snap, flick, drop — she’s done it a hundred times before. probably thousands. doesn’t look up, but the corners of her mouth twitch like she knows.

i see you. i’ve seen this before. i know exactly where it’s going.

you reach for the towel, dabbing at your arms.

“sorry, i didn’t mean to drip,” you mumble, guilty while the mess collects on the wood. “i’ll go wipe it up.”

“don’t fuss,” she clicks her tongue. “you’re fine.”

you hover there awkwardly for a second, unsure if you should offer to help or scurry back out. before you can decide, she sounds out again, hushed.

“he’s steadier with you around.”

your hand stills on the wool.

she drops another into the bowl. “always been a good boy. but you — you make him settle, not slow down. there’s a difference, there is.”

your throat goes dry. “that’s kind of you to say.”

“don’t say nothin’ unless i mean it.”

you bite your lip, eyes stinging. “i care about him.”

“i know,” she says simply.

silence settles again, thick like molasses. then she adds, so quiet you nearly miss it:

“and if he does it right, he’ll marry you on that back lawn under the dogwood tree, same as his grandpa married me.”

you swallow, unsure how to respond.

she finally looks up, meets your gaze square. “that sound alright to you, sweetheart?”

you hum, soft and teary. “sounds like a dream.”

“good,” she goes back to her beans. “now go on and tell him i ain’t pickin’ no more unless he gets his lazy behind in here and grabs the second bowl.”

“yes ma’am,” you nod, barely containing the smile.

outside, kita’s still on the porch, bent over the cups, humming under his breath — some old country tune he often falls back on when his hands are full and his heart’s even fuller. (like right now.)

the screen door thwaps shut behind you.

you bump his arm with your hip and whisper, mischievous. “you’re in trouble, shinsuke.”

“what? why?”

“she says you gotta help with the beans.”

he groans dramatically, flopping back like he’s wounded. “throw me to the wolves just like that?”

you grin, sitting next to him. “might be worth it to get in on her good side. gonna be mrs. kita, after all.”

his eyes cut to yours, boyish and in love. “might be sooner than you think. ‘m not just messin’ around when i talk about you bein’ my wife someday.”

“got a ring tucked behind them peach slices?”

“not yet,” he says. “though i do have a down payment on somethin’ shiny. if you’re patient with me.”

you smile so wide your cheeks start to hurt. “good thing your gran says i’ve got that in spades.”
