Just saw Iron Lung and my brain is still a jumbled mess of thoughts but one of the things I loved the most about it was the little cameos/Easter eggs of how Mark actually plays video games. How he says that he'd never read the instruction manual for the ship when he's notorious for skipping tutorials, typing in random shit for the computer password cuz he always brute forces his way thru puzzles, things like that. I'm thrilled to see how far he's come with his dream and it was nice to see a little bit of truly him throughout it.

Small Iron Lung spoiler here, but there is a small detail I can't stop thinking about.

When the blood starts filling the cabin of the sub...the oxygen levels go up. The blood is bright red + oxygen levels go up? That likely means the blood is oxygenated. The implications of that alone are SO fucking fascinating. It really made me wonder...is the planet itself alive? Is it the creature causing this? Was Simon hallucinating that badly? Was it symbolizing Simon's final decision to save the black box rather than himself because "it's bigger than him" ergo, he's finally able to have a purpose that isn't purely survival and that is revitalizing him? Ahhhh, such a fun little detail that I am so curious of!

I think one of the cruelest things that happened to Simon (other than literally Everything Else) was the fact that he was brought back up out of the ocean and for a brief moment his final glimpse at humanity was nothing but a bloody porthole leading into a small room of people who called him nothing but a convict because nobody cared enough to learn his name. Something about the sliver of hope that he’ll be let out of his metal coffin is haunting to me.

I'm also really glad Jacksepticeye got to be in Iron Lung for 3 seconds so he could say two words and then be microwaved with one fucktillion units of radiation and never be seen again.

Simon saying "fuck that" to literally every other problem was so real of him. He really felt like one of the top five horror movie protagonists that I've watched. Cursing up a storm seeing the dark crawlspace for the first time. Labelling the map with stuff like "buncha rocks" and "alien shit". Drinking the rubbing alcohol like it's the last liquor shot he's gonna get before deployment. Wasting almost all of his tape just trying keep that damn button taped down. The more I think about him the more I'm delighted by him. Mark played him so damn well

I like how Mark & his team were able to work in the frog (it’s called “frog” in the game files) from the ending of the game into the movie, by having it’s blank white eye rush past Simon in the nightmare sequence.

I love how they were able to expand on and explain oddities in the game such as “why does the SM-13 -a cheap burner sub- have a valuable computer system in it?” To download the blackbox data from the SM-8!

“How can the camera take pictures if light can’t pass through blood?” It uses X-Rays instead!

“Wouldn’t that mean it slowly irradiates Simon every time it’s used?” Yes!

“Wait, doesn’t that also mean that it would only show the bones of a creature, and not the whole thing; meaning you can’t tell if it’s alive or dead?” Also yes!

This movie‘s attention to detail is insane. 10/10.

My captain told me her convicts kept disappearing in the blood ocean so I asked how many convicts she has and she said she just goes to the prison and gets a new convict afterwards so I said it sounds like she’s just feeding convicts to the blood ocean and then she started crying.

Something something the oxygen meter going up and Simon somehow having enough air for days longer then he should and how the sub essentially becomes a part of Simon and how blood carries oxygen and what is the purpose of a real Iron lung anyways and iron is what carries oxygen in human blood after all and the blood trying to make him one with the ship because it was already breathing for him and the eldritch forces genuinely can't understand why he's still fighting to maintain his autonomy and sense of self in the face of something so much bigger than him, when it would just be so much easier and less painful to allow himself to be subsumed

Something about the indomitable human spirit in the face of something that's so incomprehensible that it can make metal breathe for you

I can't get over how human Simon was. He apologised for his outbursts, even when punching the sub at one point, he repeatedly apologised for the radiation in the exact same way like he was still reeling from the shock of that information. Whenever the oxygen ticked down you can see a new wave of horror washing over him that he needs to take a second to cope with. When Ava gives him the login details he stumbles on remembering control-shift-9 never mind the password she rattled out.

They managed to present a man with a dark past and anger issues who is also not a monster. He is a human being desperate to survive and nobody even knows his name anymore. The closest thing he had to a family he resents but still obviously misses terribly as he clings to that pendant and shakes.

And Ava. Ava too. She's in an impossible situation. She doesn't want more humans to die. She has no idea how much damage radiation has done to her. This man, who she thought was a heartless killer, is begging and pleading and apologising like a child and it's getting increasingly harder to lie to him that he's going to be ok. Her screaming and begging that this is bigger than him is so achingly desperate I can still feel it, humanity is almost entirely gone. I fully believe that she hates this as well, all of it, but if she doesn't follow orders and take calculated risks then what else is there to keep her tethered and sane? What else can she cling to? They're almost entirely alone in an empty universe. She needs this hope.
