C.S. Pacats works and DCC couldn't have anything less to do with each other, but I find them both so very refreshing in terms of queer representation because it's rarely ever even brought up. Captive Prince and Dark Rise carry their own entire plots and actions, it just happens that the two main characters are gay, and it's so relieving not to deal with 'omg... do I like ... another man?! ' or a character going 'erm I actually don't get this but I am going to try and figure it out I guess '

whereas in DCC the underlying queerness lies in the fact that the AI is male leaning and still very unquestionably sexually attracted to Carl. it's not brought up as an issue at all, it's not even mentioned really at all that it's a masculine entity that likes another guy. it's just there. and that's so awesome

that being said my repertoire of books isn't THAT big yet, but it's just so nice. i adored the arc of a scythe series a lot and neil shusterman I love you and I loved Jeri but I could not stand the introduction to Jeri's gender identity 😭🙏

for some reason knowing the rough age estimates of Justicus makes them feel more tragic to me. like on my first read I thought Justice was in his mid-thirties, then was hit like a truck on my second read with the realization that Justice is only in his younger twenties

They also have said that novitiates only typically test when they turn 20. but Justice was 18, and since he's Marcus's shieldmate, it's safe to assume that Marcus was at least 20 when they first became shieldmates

which just. makes my heart ache. of course Justice would have to kill Marcus eventually, he was older by at least 2 years, of course his time was going to run out sooner than Justice's.

but it's not even like he was some old man, he was in his mid to late twenties at MOST when he started to turn. James words in the prologue still haunt me when he says "you've never really lived at all" because yeah, none of the Stewards have, and Justice and Marcus didn't even have time to be anything more than pining shieldmates because by the time they decided to steal a night together it was already too late
