for some reason knowing the rough age estimates of Justicus makes them feel more tragic to me. like on my first read I thought Justice was in his mid-thirties, then was hit like a truck on my second read with the realization that Justice is only in his younger twenties
They also have said that novitiates only typically test when they turn 20. but Justice was 18, and since he's Marcus's shieldmate, it's safe to assume that Marcus was at least 20 when they first became shieldmates
which just. makes my heart ache. of course Justice would have to kill Marcus eventually, he was older by at least 2 years, of course his time was going to run out sooner than Justice's.
but it's not even like he was some old man, he was in his mid to late twenties at MOST when he started to turn. James words in the prologue still haunt me when he says "you've never really lived at all" because yeah, none of the Stewards have, and Justice and Marcus didn't even have time to be anything more than pining shieldmates because by the time they decided to steal a night together it was already too late
