As the world tuned into Taylor Swiftâs Folklore another, albeit smaller, yet just as mighty debut, took place a few days prior to her July 24th debut. Enter The Avalanches and their new sample LP containing two ethereal mixes that brings together diverse artists, sounds, and samples to create a seamless musical experience. Â
Both songs âWherever You Goâ and âReflecting Lightsâ take listeners on a journey that together is a harmonious balancing act. Starting with âWherever You Go,â the song builds and explodes with sound and creates an experience for the listener and viewer if you add in the visualizer video which I recommend for a well rounded experience.Â
Accompanying the song is the note from the artist:
âWhy do we send music to the stars? Is it because we want our voices to live forever? How else should we become pure spirits, singing forever in the dark? âOur stars are not where we last admired them. Our homes crumble and we donât know which place to long for.â â Ann Druyanâ
âWherever You Goâ is a cultural mashup that starts with a reflection of dreams and ideals (the song samples the âVoyager Golden Recordâ) but ends in modern day reality and disillusion with the lyric by Neneh Cherry, âThe whole damn world's incinerated.âÂ
Whereas âWherever You Goâ hits a more peppy beat, âReflecting Lights,â hits a soulful, funky, ethereal note that reflects the current state of affairs in this world. Semi-mournful and hauntingly beautiful it is the slower and more relaxed of the two songs.Â
The artist released this note with âReflecting Lightsâ
âA Vashti Bunyan record from 1970. The church bells across the street from my house, recorded on an iPhone. They once rang like clockwork every Sunday. Now, in lockdown, they are gone.Â
The hiss from a much-loved vinyl record. The static on our television sets: radiation left over from the Big Bang.
What are these sounds that haunt our lives ⌠floating in the static and the noise all around us, just beyond our grasp?
Are they radio waves or hallucinations? Voices from the past? Beginning with the physical, we become the ephemeral. We are changed. Enmeshed in the universal fabric, we are reflecting light.âÂ
Overall both songs are gorgeous and both compliment the other in meaning and in tone. By chance I came across them, and I am better for it. The accompanying notes and visuals elevate an already high level audio experience.

One of 20 Million | Unemployed In the World Of Covid-19
To the federal politicians, the state representatives and governors, to the people who judge the unemployed, to the prospective employers who donât have the decency to send an email when a candidate is rejected, and above all to those who are still trudging along in the world of unemployment, this message is for you.
I am writing this note on my five month anniversary of unemployment. A milestone I never wanted, expected, or would wish on my own worst enemy. I am writing this because I think it is important to understand that most people who are unemployed right now would rather not be. There is a rhetoric against the extension of federal unemployment benefits that doesnât really give the whole picture of unemployment in this country and I want to shed light on a another perspective.Â
In the current climate, people are changing career paths simply because their job no longer exists. Some people don't want to continue doing their previous type of job and are looking for other options because when the second wave of this pandemic hits, they will most likely be laid off again. Others are willing to compromise on some things like salary, location, or job duties but know they are worth more than what they are being sold and that the opportunity is a stopgap until something more sustainable comes along.Â
I have been actively working since I graduated from college in 2013 and this five-month gap of unemployment is the longest I have been without a job. I would describe this experience as miserable. Every week that goes by, I think of how unemployable and undesirable I look to prospective companies. Rationally I know many in the United States are in a similar boat, but emotionally I canât help but wonder what this means for my future.Â
During my five months of unemployment, four have been filled with active job hunting (April I was taking care of my mother who had COVID-19) and during that time I have applied to just under 80 jobs. That means writing 80 cover letters, filling out 80 applications and repeating the same information on my resume on job sites, creating portfolios, and designing a website. Of those almost 80 jobs, I have had TWO interviews. Â
You may ask, well why havenât you applied to more jobs? You are unemployed right, what else are you doing with your time? To that I say, Iâm trying to live. Iâm trying to maintain a semblance of mental health in a world that is continually disappointing me and that I feel like a disappointment in. I am constantly having to fight for my unemployment benefits, food stamps, and healthcare, while also sprinkling in volunteer work here and there to keep my skills sharp. I am trying to educate myself and use this time for growth. But most of all after you apply to 50 jobs and donât hear back for even a phone screening, you start to lose momentum. I am applying to jobs in three cities. That is three locations across the country that I am open to moving to and still, the jobs are limited. I wonder what that means for someone who has only one option for a city, what types of odds are they facing?Â
So to whom it may concern, when you are debating continuing unemployment benefits, claiming that people getting them aren't going back to work because they are making too much money, judging the situation without experiencing it, please understand that most of us in this country want to work, but we want to do it safely. We want to have a purpose and want the security that comes with a steady paycheck. Many of us have continued to stay home, socially distance, and be responsible so that we can go back to sustainable and safe jobs. We were NOT the ones who opened up the country too early, without a plan, while simultaneously endangering the lives of lower-wage workers in the name of âsaving the economy.â However, we will be the ones to pay the price in our faltering economy if an extension of benefits is not agreed upon.Â
There seems to be a misunderstanding about what it means to be in a pandemic, an economic crisis, and a recession. A stimulus check of $1,200 doesnât fix the problem. It is a small circular band aid that is being put over a gaping wound that needs stitches, the stitches are the weekly federal unemployment boost.Â
I live in Miami, FL, my weekly state unemployment benefit after taxes is $247. My rent is $1,250 a month. Altogether, my monthly state benefits donât even cover my monthly rent. Simply put, on state benefits alone, I would not survive. This is just one piece of reality that comes from killing the weekly federal benefit. Right now, I am living frugally but will occasionally eat at a local restaurant or purchase something I need or want outside of my normal groceries. Once I lose weekly federal benefits, that stops. My bills are just under $2,000 a month (phone, electric, internet, rent, etc.) and any extra money I have saved up will go towards paying those bills while I figure out my next steps to avoid going into debt.Â
If I lose federal benefits, I will have to move back to Illinois and move in with my dad. I am going to be 29 years old on August 15th, and after 7 years of independent living, will now have no other choice but to move back in with a parent. I will no longer be giving to our economy in a way that helps bolster it, and I know I am not alone.Â
So this long message is really rooted in respect.
Respect towards those who are laid off, or those who may be pushing back and not wanting to go back to a job that pays minimum wage with no protection against a killer virus.Â
Respect from prospective employers when working with candidates and hiring. This is an employer market right now, you hold the power and we as prospective employees know that. So do us a favor, list your salary ranges, if you actually talk to a human send them a note if they are declined for the job. Remember that you may be their first or fortieth application and that those who are writing applications are just as tired of writing accolades about themselves as you are of reading them.Â
And to the people making economic decisions, understand your choices have trickling down impacts that you may not even realize. Just as hard as many senators fight for the rights of fetuses, fight for the livelihood of the humans who are on the cusp of not making it and donât know how much longer they can keep fighting. Remember that many of those laid off, are educated, politically driven, and involved constituents who will remember who was there for them in a time of crisis and who was not.Â
To those who read this and thought âthis is meâ you are not alone. The tunnel of this unknown time is dark and very limited in its lighting but eventually, we will find our purpose again. Although difficult there are moments I do find solace in this time of self-discovery and the new skills I have learned. That being said, I would much rather have a job that pays me well, bolsters my skill sets, and is in a field I could actually see building a career in.Â
What does the future hold? No one really knows, but I believe everything happens for a reason, although I would like that reason to come out sooner rather than later because patience is not my virtue.

Twoish years ago I moved to Miami, FL. Since moving to FL I have found a new obsession with poke bowls and palms. I decided to post a blog post because I was feeling lost when it came to adding some green to my house.
I had a dead corner in my house aka a corner next to my bed that was too tiny for a table but needed a little something to pull the room together.
This was an easy enough project, but if I can streamline what is needed to make it easier for the next person, I have done my due diligence.
Items Purchased:Â
Royal Palm:Â Â I have a cat (see photo) I needed something safe for her and that would be chic...this fit the bill.Â
Depending on your palm leave preference the possibilities are endless, well endless up to what your local garden center has in stock. Â
Dirt: Indoor/Outdoor Potting Soil: I went with Vigoro aka the cheapest one.    Â
Pot:Â Here is where things get creative, I went back and forth and up and down the pot aisle for 15 minutes. I learned you are more than welcome to put your new plant in the pot to try it out...this is common sense but took me a while to get there so I am just putting it out in the universe.Â
I went with this option (see below), to make sure the plant would have some room to grow. It also was on trend with my house and could be moved anywhere if needed.Â
That was it, four things! And the steps to display it are even easier.
1) Fill pot 1/3 of the way with some soil
2) Tilt plant upside down and place in soil
3) Cover with more soil and water
I did these steps outside to cut down on dirt in the house
4) Place in house (on your saucer) and clean up any dirt that slipped out of the drainage hole.
This is a post for anyone like me that had no clue about doing indoor planting. If you have pets it makes it even more difficult. I have been using this link to decipher what we can and cannot have in the house.

A well written opinion article, about you guessed it, is abouy the Ice Bucket Challenge. I am not opposed to sharing/am slowing losing the open minded patience I had regarding the topic.
One of my friends from college challenged me to post daily things I am grateful for. With the exception of one day (I fell asleep early) I have kept up with this. I am now switching over to blog format....to A) Use this blog and B) make my friends hate me less for overwhelming their Newsfeed with my political views, unfunny jokes, and sappy stories. This brings me to my next list:
Freedom:
1)Freedom to take the train, the bus, to drive, to walk...pretty much being allowed to get from Point A-Point B on my own free will
2)Freedom to speak my mind, and if someone criticizes me be free to respond how I please.
3)Freedom to pursue my own dreams, goals, and idealistic agenda.

Why I'm not dumping ice on my head for ALS and why that is ok.
The newest trend sweeping the world, and I mean world is the Ice Bucket Challenge raising money for ALS. This campaign has raised lots of money, and in some cases awareness about the debilitating disease ALS. For starters âALS or Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.â To find out more about ALS or donating to the cause click here.
I had to look up what ALS was because I have been fortunate thus far in my life to not know anyone affected by it. I say fortunate, because degenerative diseases scare me to no end, and the impact they have on the lives of those affected and by extension family and friends is extremely saddening. All this being said, ALS isnât my cause and that is ok.
To all those people being passive aggressive or getting defensive about those not donating/taking part in the challenge I say, letâs calm down. Just because someone wonât take part in the Ice Bucket Challenge raising money for ALS doesnât mean they are heartless, it just might not be their cause, and I say again that is OK!
(A side note here as well, I for one would never dump cold water on my head to raise awareness. I feel more comfortable doing this in other methods.)
What I hope the Ice Bucket Challenge does, is ignite the real personal causes of people. Another way to phrase this is as followed: what would be your driving cause to dump ice cold water on your head or donate $100? Or what would you have wanted the movement to be if you ignited it? For some that may actually be ALS, and that is awesome and for some it might not be and that is also awesome. I took the time to make a short list of ice bucket causes in my life:
Diabetes
Liver Cancer
Breast Cancer
Heart Disease
Heart Attacks
Colon Cancer
Ok any CancerâŚ
Depression/Anxiety
Bi-Polar Disorder
Disability Rights
Female Genital Mutilation
Sex/Human Trafficking
Education for All
Developing World Growth
Economic Equality
Best Buddies
Native American Reservations
*All topics can be clicked to learn a little more
Now I work for a non-profit, and with that lucrative career (sarcasm) I obviously canât support all of these causes financially. This also means as a human being I canât emotionally support ALL causesâŚand again I say that is OK! Â
Another point I would like to make on this topic is that although large monetary donations are important, I think the thought process behind donations is even more significant. In other words, Peer Pressure solves nothing, and I mean this for all fundraising not just the one discussed in this post. I ask my friends and family to donate to my Non-Profit all the time, and if they donât I canât get offended. It just isnât their cause, and that is ok. But I do respect them, and again I have to point out passive aggression, posting articles about how much money has been raised in an attacking manner, or getting in arguments is not helping the cause and is downright rude.
So thank you ALS Ice Bucket Challenge for reigniting my own personal causes. Thank you for letting me reestablish what drives ME every day, and what is I would hypothetically dump ice water on my head for. Thank you for sparking a movement about an issue that affects many and allowing there to be light shed on an issue that should not be taken lightly. But above all thank you, for showing that everyone has their own Ice Bucket cause, and NO ONE should be attacked if it isnât the same as the masses.Â
