Reading through the German translation of Relentless (under cut because long)
There's a list of previous books at the start & some of the german titles are A Choice™:
The Darkelves, The Revenge of the Darkelves & The Curse of the Darkelves (for Homeland, Exile, Sojourn);
The Magic Stone (Halfling's Gem);
Brothers of Darkness (Siege of Darkness), The Coast of Swords (Passage to Dawn);
Crystal of Darkness (The Silent Blade), Shadowtime (The Spine of the World), The Return of Hope (Sea of Swords) [<-these aren't even close]
The Black Spell (Servant of the Shard), (Promise of) The Witch-King [close, I guess], The Dragons of the Bloodstonelands (Road of the Patriarch) [and we're bullshitting again]
The Invasion of the Orcs (The Thousand Orcs) [close again], Battle of Creatures (The Lone Drow) [this is the worst one so far imo]
Transitions are all literal translations, but why isn't the structure consistent (Der König der Orks, Der Piratenkönig, Der König der Geister)
Master of Magic (Archmage), Master of Intrigue (Maestro), Master of Battle (Hero) mainly annoys me because they could've just not done that. Just come up with a one word translation for Archmage and name the other two Maestro and Held, Maestro literally didn't even need to be changed
Matron was translated as "Oberin" which means the nun in charge in a convent irl, but it is kind of fitting (but also the word "Matrone" exists too and could've been used)
They seem to have stopped translating drow to Dunkelelfen at some point and I'm not sure how I'm supposed to pronounce it in german
They're literally calling Gromph "Erzmagier" in his description, they could've just titled Archmage that
Bruenor & Catti-brie's last name is "Herohammer" instead
I don't generally like the translations of place names for d&d because in german they just sound like stuff places would actually be named. "Eiswindtal" could be a real place, just like how the other way around "Misery Gorge" could be a d&d location
"Dämonennetzhöllen" is just a horrible word to pronounce compared to Demonweb Pits
They didn't translate the "Saint" in Saint Sollars to "Heilige(r)" so I guess that's just part of his name now
I don't like that the Oozing Myconid is called the Sweating Mushroom now, that sounds so much worse
I also don't like tha Jarlaxle and Zak are using the formal you when talking to each other, feels wrong especially for Jarlaxle
Yvonnel using formal you in the same sentence as calling one of her daughters "child" seems too respect for the situation
The German name for Port Llast is just "Letzthafen"? What happened to the second L?
Where did they get Nimrods as translation for the retrievers from
Okay so the dwarves are using informal you even when talking to their royalty, but drow are using formal you even for children
And of course the dwarves don't have their dialect in the German version, god forbid a translator could ever write something that isn't high-german
Gutbusters are called Bonebreakers & the German word for bugbear is apparently "Grottenschrat"?
Athrogate isn't rhyming :(
How do you get from Closeguard Isle to Schanzeninsel (ramp island)
Present day Bregan D'aerthe is using informal you (at least the ones in Luskan) while in the flashback scenes in Menzo they used the formal one, interesting
Kimmuriel is still using formal you for members of Bregan D'aethe, but not for Wulfgar or Bonnie Charlee. I'm assuming that's supposed to mean he doesn't respect them
They also didn't change the spelling for Uthegental/Uthegentel
I can't read "Zaubererbruder" without thinking of that one ASP Krabat album
How are you gonna talk about Catti-brie slipping back into her dwarven accent when you literally didn't give the dwarves any fucking accent
"Mordgesellen" is such a funny word for Zak, Jarlaxle & Arathis; like yeah sure the murder fellas (the original word was rogues)
This doesn't have anything to do with the translation, but the name Bolfae just kind of sucks (Bolfae deez nuts)
"»Tja«, sagte Beniago, verdrehte die Augen und ging." Tja is just such a good word, fits here much better than Indeed too imo
'Burrow warden' has been translated as 'Höhlenvater' (cave father)?
Feywine is called Moonwine
Please stop calling it The Sweating Mushroom, I hate that name so much
they're literally fucking and still using formal you
Okay so I wasn't sure about it when I read the english version but they changed the english spelling from Daer’mon N’a’shezbaernon to D’aermon N’a’chezbaernon, why is the german version somehow more consistent when it comes to spelling?
Beniago ist canonically ein Lauch
"Feuersalamander" mach Beine auseinander, mach Beine wieder zu, und raus bist du
»Der Feuersturm ist uns gut geraten«, flötete Athrogate. »Öffne die Tür und werde zum Braten!« Oh so now they're letting him rhyme
Instead of Copperhead Copetta's nickname is literally just Red head (Rotschopf), booo boring
Waybeard of all names wasn't translated? Like Clangeddin Silverbeard was changed to Silberbart, but Dagna(b)bet Waybeard doesn't get changed to Wegbart?
Also fun fact but this is the only Drizzt book available in my area's online library service, book 36/40 is a great point to start a series I'm sure/s
