A koala joey born last fall at the San Diego Zoo has recently emerged from her mother's pouch.
"At this age, she has not shown us her personality yet,” zoo keeper Lacy Pearson said.
But judging from this video of the joey’s first check up, we beg to differ.
Worn out from the political rabble-rousing and election mailers? Cheer up: The California primary is right around the corner.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to voting on June 7.
It all started with a lion’s roar.
Dr. Harry Wegeforth founded the San Diego Zoo in 1916 after driving past Balboa Park and hearing a big cat roar from a small zoo exhibit in the 1915-1916 Panama California Exposition, which had closed earlier that year.
This Saturday, @sdzoo celebrates 100 years at Balboa Park. Check out more photos and learn more about the zoo’s history here.
KPBS hosted a debate Tuesday night for the top contenders in the U.S. Senate race. Some highlights:
Front-runner Kamala Harris deflected questions about San Onofre.
Duf Sundheim repeatedly went after her.
Tom Del Beccaro said it's time for the U.S. to give up on immigration reform.
Loretta Sanchez debated in what one political scientist compares to Ted Cruz’s Shakespearean style.
Ron Unz boasted about his training as a physicist before saying he’s not “persuaded that the evidence is there” for climate change.
You can watch the debate here.

The Island Fox is a diminutive and docile fox unique to California’s Channel Islands. In fact, they are the only carnivore unique to California. They are broken up into six subspecies, living on and named after 6 of the 8 Channel Islands.
A new study has revealed that they are unique in another incredible way: they are nearly genetically identical to one another. A lack of genetic diversity can pose serious threats to survival, yet the Island Fox population has been recovering for the last few years (though they are still listed as ‘near threatened’). Read more about this trait and how it may affect the future of the foxes here.
Fliers naming students "who have allied themselves with Palestinian terrorists" that were recently posted around California universities have stirred up inflammatory rhetoric about terrorism and anti-Semitism.
This week, we sat down with an Israeli and a Palestinian to dig deeper into the issue. Here’s what they said.

"Amazons and Their Men," a play being performed at Diversionary Theatre in University Heights is inspired by German director Leni Riefenstahl.
If Riefenstahl were judged on her filmmaking skills alone then she might reside in the cinematic pantheon with Orson Welles, Akira Kurosawa and Federico Fellini. Unfortunately, her groundbreaking documentaries "Triumph of the Will" and "Olympia" were commissioned by the Third Reich, making Adolf Hitler her boss.
The play runs through Oct. 4.

Bayard Rustin was the chief architect of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, where Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.
Rustin, an outspoken activist, skilled strategist and charismatic leader in his own right, was pushed out of the historical spotlight because he was openly gay.
He is the subject of “Blueprints to Freedom: An Ode to Bayard Rustin," which is getting its world premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse this month.

The Barrio Logan College Institute is an after-school program that serves low-income families, mostly Mexican immigrants, in Barrio Logan, Chula Vista and other parts of San Diego County. The method is two-fold: start preparing students for college in elementary school and involve the whole family in the planning process.
Early-start, family-focused programs like BLCI are becoming increasingly common across the United States to address the needs of the rising immigrant population.
