job applications just keep getting weirderâŚ..
pro jobseeking tip: never answer these surveys honestly
also a tip: if they have a question like âEverybody steals from work sometimesâ answer âdisagree.â I found this out when i was working as a hiring manager and the company i worked for started instituting these tests for managerial hires or promotions. My boss and I were promoting someone and she failed the test because she answered that question as âslightly agreeâ which in the results tells them that she is someone likely to steal because she believes everyone does it. When we asked her about her answer, it turns out she picked what she did because sheâs cynical and does assume that people steal but didnt agree with them doing so. she almost sued the company for not promoting her based on that but chose to leave instead. We lost a good employee because corporate decided these tests were a good way to screen for âgoodâ employees. tldr these things are poorly designed, ambiguously worded, and structured in ways that are designed to eliminate people because the intention of the questions is never made clear. these tests are evil.
this sounds like an ableist disaster for people who arenât neurotypical and who struggle with reading signalsÂ
When I went to get diagnosed with ADHD, the neuropsychologist couldnât figure out what was going on, because on paper Iâm apparently floridly psychotic.  No, the questions are imprecise, and I am hyper-literal and extremely honest. Â
âDo you often see things that other people do not see?â Â Yes.Â
The question I was answering:  âAre you especially observant?â
The question the test was actually asking:  âAre you having visual hallucinations?âÂ
âDoes your environment ever have special messages for you?â Â Yes. Â
The question I was answering:  âDoes the sudden sight of a rainbow during a   bout of doubt and self-loathing make you feel as though the world is trying to cheer you up?â
The question the test was actually asking:  âDo you believe that your toaster is trying to convince you that the neighbors are spying on you?â
Five years later, I bombed a psych eval for a park ranger job for the same sort of thing. Â Tread carefully, darlings. Â
^^^^ that is actually such a huge issue with diagnosis!!!! and Iâve thought I didnât experience symptoms for ages that I actually clearly had all along because of things being phrased super weirdly and confusingly :(
And this is why McDonaldâs never called me after I applied
Yeah, this is why this kind of thing in job apps needs to be illegal. A lot of discrimination is well hidden.
Oh! That explains why even having friends and my then-husband proofread these every time didnât even work. They may not be as weird as me, but theyâre not neurotypical. We all read the questions tantefledermaus mentioned as observational skills!
@tantefledermaus â the EXACT same thing happened to me when I was tested for ADHD. The test asked me if I felt like âother people could hear my thoughts.â I put âyesâ thinking âyeah Iâm pretty transparent and a terrible liar so I just let whatever Iâm feeling show on my faceâ when they meant âdo you feel like other people have telepathic powers?â And there were a handful of others I have forgotten about by now. It was years after my ADHD diagnosis that I really started experiencing psychotic symptoms and then I was like ââŚthis sensation is galaxies away from how Iâd lived my life for so longâŚthey canât be described with the same language.â I hate those vaguely worded questions so much.
On the bright side, the one good thing about having been constantly in mental health care and having to be screened over and over and over again is that I learned how to bullshit my way through these kind of amoral job screenings  bc I have learned how to fake normalcy on paper once I identified âwhat they are looking for.â The fact that the surveys that I have filled out for job applications echo the screenings my old therapist gave me to detect potential personality disorders is extremely disturbing.Â
The worst part is sometimes they will make people answer those questions for you. I applied for a job that used a hiring company to screen applicants and you had to get FIVE PEOPLE to fill out a job survey for you online, FIVE PEOPLE you had worked with, at least two of which had to be supervisorsâthis was for a minimum wage entry level job as a SECRETARY. The questions included things about how well you handled stress and stressful situations, how positive your attitude was, how you reacted emotionally to criticism, how well you could suppress negative emotions on the job, stuff like that.
When I saw the questions I broke down and cried and my depression was badly triggered because I felt like a bad employee as someone with depression, anxiety, and borderline personality disorder. I was so frustrated that completing tasks I was hired to do at an above and beyond level was not enoughâapparently I had to fit some ridiculous, narrow personality type that someone with emotional disorders is incapable of exhibiting. And I couldnât even lie and pretend I was those things, because other people I worked with could simply say the truth: I did my job verywell, but I was not the unfailingly positive and emotionally sturdy employee this company wanted me to be.
When I told my mother about these questions, in tears and in a pit of depression, she was shocked and offended at how inappropriate and personal they were for a basic entry level secretary position and advised I not work for a company like that. Itâs absolutely bullshit that in a capitalist society it is not enough that you are productive and effective at your job: no matter how underpaid or exploited you are, you must be ever smiling and cheerful about it. Moreover, it is not enough that you work hard, but you must also have a particular personality that mirrors the âvirtuesâ of capitalism.
So all of Detroit public schools are going to close after April 8th if thereâs no funding and thereâs definitely no money so I guess the school to prison pipeline is now completely removing schools from the equation here.
I just wanted to clarify that by close, whatâs actually happening is after April 8th, the district will literally not have the money to pay any of the teachers. At all. None. Unless lawmakers grant them 50 mil in aid, but so far they canât agree on a plan. And there are already teachers on the news saying they will not be going to work if theyâre not being paid. Given the current conditions DPS teachers deal with every day (lack of funding, overcrowded classrooms, limited resources) no one can really blame them or say anything. No one knows exactly what will happen since the district is already about 515 mil in debt but itâs not looking good.

Thatâs what you do with Depression, you mask the symptoms. The symptoms of Depression IS depression, itâs not a symptom of something else. Itâs not like you go âoooh, I feel really sadâ and then your arse falls off. The symptoms of Depression is depression. You take away the symptoms of Depression HALLOOOOO! youâre cured! But Tom [Cruise] was like âno, no, no Matt. Matt, these drugs Matt, these drugs theyâre just a crutch, these drugs are just a crutch!â and Iâm thinking âyes?â. THEYâRE A CRUTCH! You donât walk up to a guy with one leg and say âhey pal, that crutch is just a crutch, THROW IT AWAY! Hop ya bastard! That crutch is masking the symptoms of your one leggednessâ.

Some deaf people can speak
Some deaf people can speak
Some deaf people can speak
Also one of annoying things hearies do is when a deaf speaks, they assume that person can hear well enough to carry a spoken conversation
Omg yes!! I explained to receptionist at doctors that I was deaf once and would need the doctor to do something visual to get my attention and she instantly started speaking back to me and I was just stood there desperately trying to read her lips (she spoke at like 100 miles per hour) while thinking âyes I can speak but that doesnât mean I can hear you when you speakâ
It also seems to depend on how well you speak too. My hearing wasnât as bad when I was younger so I think that played a big part in me learning speech but people donât see me when Iâm tired or when Iâm ill or Iâm having a bad mental health day. My husband will vouch that I can barely form a sentence correctly because my mind is just too tired to focus on speaking correctly which it does the other 99% of the time.
And I am probably the only Scottish person alive who canât say the words âauchâ and âlochâ I canât hear that throaty sound you make when you say them so I literally pronounce them wrong all the time.
My parents would hear out for words that I was pronouncing incorrectly and then literally stop the conversation, even if it wasnât with them but with like my friends or teachers or whatever, and repeat the word until I got it right. My first word was spider without the s and I think there was like ten minutes of my parents repeating the word over and over until I said it with the s. A consonant that I had no access to.
Ugh I get that. My mum still stops me if I pronounce a word wrong. Her most loved one is when I donât pronounce the letter âTâ properly. Sheâs always complaining that I sound American cause I donât hit âTâ hard enough.
Iâm like âin the grand scheme of things does it really matter if I donât sound Scottish? At least Iâm trying my bestâ

Over 85 women who've suffered death by television and just-so-happened to also like other women.
The history of lesbian representation on television is rocky â in the beginning, we seemed exclusively relegated to roles that saw us getting killed/attacked or doing the killing/attacking. And until the last five or so years, lesbian and bisexual characters seemed entirely unable to date an actual woman or stay alive for more than three episodes, let alone an entire run, of a show. Gay and lesbian characters are so often murdered on television that we have our very own trope: Bury Your Gays. We comprise such a teeny-tiny fraction of characters on television to begin with that killing us off so haphazardly feels especially cruel.
When I first saw this headline it was 65. The number keeps climbing. Thatâs fucked up.
Now itâs up to 108 (the headline says 103 but I counted them). Like any good psychologist, I had to graph the data. I coded them (very roughly as I havenât seen the majority of the shows) based on the method used to kill off the character, and whether the death was murder, suicide, accidental, or illness related. I donât have non-lesbian/bi characters to compare these numbers to, but here is what the raw data looks like:Â
Gunshots, whether accidental or on purpose, are the leading cause of death for lesbian and bisexual characters.Â
Roughly 64% of the characters were murdered.Â
I also noticed a disturbing trend of deaths that were due to their orientation, such as characters dying because they came out to someone who reacted badly and it caused an accident, or due to jealous exes (or exes of their same-gender lovers) murdering them/causing accidents. Together these made up 16% of all deaths. Two other themes I noticed were pregnancy-related deaths and death just after a major happy moment for the character.
@lgbtviewersdeservebetter for the graphs
According to the media we can only die violent deaths. Letâs tell them weâre not accepting that any longer.
