Example of Tumblr's aging userbase: people complain about prices rising and how things were better in the past and are getting worse all the time (often in spite of contrary evidence!), have often developed a sharp technophobia based on misunderstandings of how technologies work and moral panics about dangers that are not supported by research, and hold strong opinions about the problem being due to moral failings that can be fixed by simply destroying the unvirtuous and showing personal virtue, and also are convinced that the past was both better and also harder, and that kids these days have it too easy (but they feel sorry for them because everything sucks now)
The video game history foundation has just finished scanning every copy of the neopets magazine and added it to their archive. Super cool!
It might be a little silly, but Neopets Magazine is an important slice of a different part of gaming culture.
During its four-year run, Neopets Magazine covered the latest news and strategies for the influential 2000s-era web game. It also had a lot of articles about Neopets merchandise and trading cards. In fact, it’s mostly ads for Neopets products. Or long articles about Neopets lore. At best, it is mostly an off-topic magazine. So why did we focus on this magazine of our archive? Simple: it’s about the game’s audience. Neopets was, arguably, the defining girl game of the 2000s. An entire microgeneration of girls got their start in the world of digital entertainment by raising virtual pets and playing Flash games to get Neopoints. [...] Notably, many of the magazine’s articles are about creativity and customization. There’s shades in here of the gameplay styles that have become more popular in the last decade with the rise of cozy games and farming sims. My favorite quirk of Neopets Magazine is in the audience survey that came with some issues. In one survey question, they asked whether readers bought this magazine at a clothing store! That would have reached a completely different audience than we usually associate with game magazines. Can you imagine PC Gamer being sold at a Charlotte Russe? The point is that Neopets The Official Magazine represents a different slice of gaming culture, one that we know matters to researchers and to our extended community.

horror movie showing a child’s drawing of the monster or ghost or whatever but instead of a little kid and crayons they’re like a preteen and it’s manga style
My rendition 🥰
Microsoft is finally letting you move and resize the taskbar again in Windows 11, along with a slate of other fixes to gradually unfuck the shell they've been ignoring for five years, and I was reading an industry article that mentioned this as a warning sign that they must really be struggling if they're pulling resources away from their cloud AI push to focus on the user experience. Which might be true, but I just love the concept. This is not cute, Microsofts only improve client software when they're very upset!
The tick-tock of "decent Windows version, dogshit Windows version, repeat" is so reliable and has been going on for so long I can't believe Microsoft could possibly be unaware of it. Whatever institutional pressures are causing it must be immense: they've outlived multiple CEOs, multiple industry paradigm shifts, Sinofsky's departure, etc.
i hate the word spicy can we bring back calling things erotic
rolling up to Wendy's to get an erotic chicken sandwich
Something that really effs me up is how a large amount of society's "undesirable" adjectives are traits you can acquire due to disability.
Unemployed. Lives with their parents. Provides little to no economic value. Physically weak. NEET. Social outcast. Burden on others. Useless. Out of shape. Needs special care and attention. Over-sensitive. Medication-reliant.
this is so true, and as I discover more about myself and my disabilities I’ve been seeing it everywhere. A lot of times it’s even in small things like: picky eaters, kids who have the rolly backpacks, people who ask blunt questions, and people who correct others. those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head (and a lot of these pertain to autistic people, which I am) but you really just start to see it in everything people find annoying or undesirable
Can't cook or clean. Can't make or receive phone calls. Sleeps during the day. Bad memory. Doesn't go outside much.
Extends even to activism circles as well, and it's horrible when it does. Unable to use public transportation and needs a car. Can't walk. Needs prepared foods. "Unhealthy" diet. Needs single-use things like paper plates, plastic tableware, plastic straws. I've seen people bullied FEROCIOUSLY over these by even the most Be Gay Do Crime antifa ACAB folks you can imagine. We are not welcome here, either, and will be sacrificed to their glorious revolution as unfortunate tragedies. You want to see someone who refuses to listen in the vilest and least educated way, you can find one in this crowd just by turning in a circle and pointing. It is a virulently ableist community.
A lot of it applies to people without a steady home to live in. (Lots of them are disabled!)
callout posts are like "i did something extremely rude to this person & they were annoyed by that. dont you think that means they should lose all of their friends & become socially untouchable & get shot with 1 million guns???"
"This person's actually responding in a really composed and understandable manner given the public harassment campaign I'm putting them through where I call them a child molester for kinda grossing me out. obviously that means they're digging their heels in to the child molestation thing. I'm such a smart and good person, and I actually care about victims and restorative justice. Anyway help me drive them to suicide."

guy working on an artwork they knew would push them technically: what the hell why do i keep doing this wrong. am i haunted by malevolent spirits and such
but do you play shorter games with worse graphics made by people who are paid more to work less 🤨
the thing about "I want shorter games with worse graphics made by people who are paid more to work less and I'm not kidding" is that these games exist and are out there and you have to make the conscious choice to seek them out instead of just expecting the big companies to deliver this, because they will not

obviously I think merch artists always need to source their manufacturers in a way that prioritizes local businesses, environmental sustainability and fair labor, that goes without saying. but i think its unfair that people hold poor 20-something self employed artists making anime keychains to afford rent to a higher standard than mega corporations. people will be like "I cant go into artist alleys at cons without being appalled by the plastic and thinking of the supply chain" then go into target and be like "ooh another cool cup for me to put on my shelf and never use"
ok. i survived 25 years outside the international space station. who gives a shit
Technically most moss is outside the international space station
