Chotto Matte

“It must be grand” Tsukuyo originally says '太っ腹; futoppara' which literally means ‘fat belly’. I tried to see if this was a metaphor/colloquial for something but couldn’t find anything besides ‘腹 / belly’ could also mean one’s mind/one’s real intentions... so I guess I interpreted it to mean grand or generous? Hopefully I figure out one day.

Honmei choco (本命チョコ, "true feeling chocolate") are a type of chocolate given on Valentine’s Day in Japan with romantic feelings. Typically we see in high school anime/manga that it’s a big deal for a girl to give this type of higher quality chocolate to their crush, or given to partners.

The text in yellow (Moon Viewing) was originally “中秋の名月; Chushu no Meigetsu; harvest moon” which refers to the Mid Autumn Festival/Harvest Moon Festival on August 15th. Tsukimi (月見; Moon-Viewing) is an activity done during this time in Japan, and apparently the official name for the festival, so I thought this term was more fitting for translation.

In the second last panel where Gintoki says “Yes”, he actually says “知っている; shitteiru; I know”. I wasn’t really sure how to translate this so it didn’t seem so stand-off/arrogant-ish, so I thought just a “yes” affirmation statement would do. 

The statement “The moon is beautiful, isn’t it?” (月が綺麗ですね; tsuki ga kirei, desu ne), which I’ve seen a lot in Japanese literature/manga/anime, by playing with phonetics where the ‘tsuki/moon’ sounds like ‘suki/like’. There’s a lot more meaning to it than what I can explain (pls google it), but here’s a nice explanation here.

Some of you may already know Tsukuyo’s (月詠) name has reference to ‘moon’.

So overall, multiple layers of meaning and classic GinTsu fluff ~
