That’s because they don’t have to. They can do whatever they can talk the DM into, and consequences can be brushed aside for the “rule of cool.”

The pro wrestling comparison comes to mind. Brennan's crew doesn't need to build good characters for the same reason that John Cena's fighting skills, while impressive, only work well inside the squared circle and wouldn't last him long in an actual martial arts tournament.
