This yearâs J/C holiday story is now posted. Â Hope you enjoy!
This is the photo Admiral Janeway should have given Tuvok as a goodbye gift in âEndgame,â not that dopey 5th season promo pic
Family Ties
This an overview of the regular crewâs known family. Just for the record, I do not consider Jeri Taylorâs books, Pathfinder and Mosaic, to be canon. Not least because so much of what is in them is directly contradicted by the aired episodes.
Kathryn JanewayÂ
Her father, Vice Admiral Janeway, is dead. He âdrowned under the polar icecap on Tau Ceti Primeâ over fifteen years ago.
Janeway has a mother and one sister. They were named Gretchen and Phoebe in Jeri Taylorâs books, but their names were never mentioned on air. Her sister is âthe artist of the family.â
Janeway has an aunt named Martha, who told her some family stories that turned out be exaggerated. Janewayâs grandmother used to make vegetable biryani (perhaps she was of Indian descent?).
ChakotayÂ
He has a living sister. His father, Kolopak, joined the Maquis and was killed trying to defend his homeworld. We donât hear much about Chakotayâs mom. It is mentioned that he came out of his mother feet first, so she was his biological mother. Itâs implied that his mother is no longer alive.
He had a grandfather who suffered from mental illness due to a defective gene. Chakotay inherited the âfamily curse,â but his doctor suppressed the gene before he was born.
Tuvok
Tuvokâs mother is named TâMeni. We never hear Tuvokâs fatherâs name. Itâs implied that his father was in Starfleet, and was serving on the Yorktown 80 years ago.
Tuvokâs wife is TâPel. They have four children, three sons and one daughter. The ages of his children are really screwed up; sometimes theyâre young children, sometimes adults. The oldest is a son is named Sek; youngest is a daughter named Asil.Â
Sek is married and has a daughter T'Meni, who is named after Tuvokâs mother. The young man we see Tuvok talking to in âRepressionâ is never named on-screen, but the credits say it was Sek. Even though the adolescent Vulcan we see appears to be too young to be married, and speaks as if he is still in school, not a married father.
Asil supposedly achieved kolinahr sometime before Voyagerâs first mission, which is something for adult Vulcans (and something Tuvok failed to achieve, though he tried). Yet Tuvok speaks of Asil as if she is Naomiâs age.
B'Elanna Torres
Her father is a human named John Torres and her mother was a Klingon named Miral. (Though BâElannaâs mother is often given the name âMiral Torresâ by fans, thereâs no evidence she ever took her husbandâs name.) Itâs implied that Miral is dead; John Torres speaks of her in past tense.
BâElanna appeared to be the only child of John and Miral, but itâs possible she has half-siblings she never mentioned or doesnât know about. She was out of contact with her father for 20 years after he left, so if he re-married or had more kids, she wouldnât know about it.Â
BâElanna has three cousins named Elizabeth, Michael, and Dean, the children of her uncle, Carl Torres. Her unnamed paternal grandmother used to make her banana pancakes; she loved Miral, but warned her son not to marry her. BâElannaâs maternal grandmother was named L'Naan, and her maternal great-grandmother was Krelik.
Tom Paris
We know very little about Tomâs family. He has a father named Owen, who is an admiral in Starfleet. We know he has at least two parents who are still alive by the end of the series, but heâs never mentioned his mother or any siblings.Â
Harry Kim
Harry is an only child, born after his older parents had given up hope of having children. His parentsâ names are never mentioned on screen, but their names are given as Mary and John Kim in the credits.Â
His mother teaches eighth grade; both parents are âpractically tone-deaf,â leaving Harry wondering where his love for music came from.Â
Harry has a cousin named Dennis Kim.
Harryâs girlfriend was named Libby; she was his fiancĂŠe in an alternate timeline, but they were never engaged in the ârealâ timeline.
Neelix
Neelix came from a large family. He had a mother and a father, several brothers and sisters, and many cousins. His favorite sister was named Alixia. His great-grandfather was Mylean, not Talaxian. His mother knitted him blankets he still uses, and he knew his great-grandmother, suggesting Talaxians have lifespans similar to humansâ, or longer.
His entire family died in a war fifteen years before we meet him.
When Neelix leaves Voyager, itâs for a new family: Dexa, and her son Brax.
Kes
Kesâ father was named Benaren; he died before she left Ocampa. Her mother was Martis. Kes had no siblings. Itâs implied that all Ocampans are only children, though that would mean each generation is half the size of the previous one, which doesnât make biological sense.
Kes had an uncle name Elrem. Donât ask me how she could have an uncle if everyoneâs an only child.
Seven of Nine
Her parents, Erin and Magnus Hansen, were assimilated by the Borg and are presumably still alive, as drones in the Collective.
She has an aunt named Irene Hansen, who somehow babysat her when she was six, even though she supposedly left earth at age four and never returned.Â
The Doctor
No flesh and blood relatives, since heâs a hologram, but he has many âbrothersâ â holograms just like him, who were toiling in a mine when we last saw them.Â
Thanks for that @70thousandlightyearsfromhome ! Always difficult to distinguish what is series canon from the rest.
Very nice recap of actual series canon.
I would never be able not to love you. Â Â Â Â Â Tom C. Hunley, Intercourse

Star Trek Voyager: Think Tank
Episode 5.20 âThink Tankâ
Seven walks into Janewayâs office to find her trying to solve some kind of advanced 24th century Rubiks cube. Â Voyager encounters a Hazari vessel - Seven recognizes them and says they are bounty hunters. Â Janeway is working through the night to figure out how to escape the Hazari when Kurros appears and tells her he is the solution to her problem. Â He tells her heâs a member of a group that seeks out challenges... Janeway supplies the word âthink tank.â Kurros offers their assistance. Â He tells her he needs to look at her database to decide on a price. Â Among other things Kurros tells them they found a cure for the Phage. Â Kurros tells Janeway and Seven that they draw the line at weapons of mass destruction and genocide. Â One of the items on Kurrosâ list is Seven herself. Â Janeway tells Seven that she can make this decision herself. Â She tells Seven that if she goes it should be because itâs what she wants, not because itâs what she thinks is best for Voyager. Â Kurros tells Seven that on Voyager she is only using a fraction of her potential. Â He tells her she could become one of the greatest intellects in the galaxy. Â Seven declines the offer. Â Janeway sets a trap for the Hazari and captures one of their ships and discovers it was the think tank that hired the Hazari. Â Janeway offers to work together with the Hazari to capture the think tank and they agree. Â Seven âcheatsâ to solve the Rubicks cube and Janeway realizes that they can disrupt the think tank by disrupting their link that allows them to communicate telepathically. Â They conspire to make it appear that the Hazari have captured their ship and Seven agrees to join the think tank. Â Seven disrupts the ability of the think tank to communicate with each other. Â Voyager beams Seven back and the Hazari attack the think tank. Â Kurros tells Seven she will never be satisfied. Â She replies that Kurros has not been elevated by the pursuit of knowledge. Â As the Hazari continue to attack the think tank, Voyager escapes.

Meanwhile, back in the Alpha Quadrant...
After Damarâs efforts to help them escape, Worf and Ezri report to Sisko about the Cardassian alliance with the Breen. Â The Breen attack Starfleet Headquarters on Earth. Â Starfleet manages to destroy most of the Breen, but not before a lot of damage is done. Â Damar starts to organize a Cardassian rebellion against the Dominion. Â The Bajoran Dukat tries to convince Kai Winn to help him release the Pahâwraiths. Â In order to do this, Winn must read a dangerous and forbidden book. Â Winn and Dukat open the book to find it apparently blank. Â Admiral Ross informs Sisko that the Breen have launched a counter-offensive against Starfleet forces in the Chintoka system. Â Sisko takes the Defiant to the front. Â They engage the Breen. Â The Breen have a weapon that disrupts power to all the shipâs systems. Â They evacuate the Defiant in escape pods, and the Defiant is destroyed. Â The Breen and Dominion win the battle for the Chintoka System. Â Kai Winnâs assistant, Sobor, has had the Bajoran Dukatâs DNA sequenced and has realized he is not who he claims to be; Sobor tells Winn that he is Gul Dukat. Â Winn kills Sobor when he discovers her plan to release the Pahâwraiths. Â She is going to destroy the book, but some of Soborâs blood falls onto it and the text is revealed to her. Â She agrees to explore its power with Dukat. Â Damar gives a public broadcast calling upon Cardassians to resist the Dominion and stating that Cardassians have destroyed the Dominion cloning facility on Rondak III. Â Weyoun orders the Breen to find Damar. Â Sisko tells Ross they need to find a way to help Damar.
Voyager Book Club - February Favorite Fics
So I put forth a challenge of sorts to our Voyager Book Club. I asked everyone to pick ONE Voyager fic that they consider to be their favorite. Now, you can imagine, this is pretty freaking hard! There are so many incredible fics out there. I didnât say it had to be the best written, or the most in character. I gave examples such as: the one you read over and over or your go-to fic, however you want to phrase it. It was pointed out that a favorite fic can change every hour based on your frame of mind and what you are in the mood to read at any one moment. I get it. Even soâŚ.I challenged everyone to only pick ONE. And they did it! Or most of them! I got around 20 different favorites picked! So here is the list of our Favorite Voyager Fics, why they were chosen and by whom. Happy Reading!!
Note: Click on the name of the fic for a link to it! Also, this list is in no particular order.

@curator-on-ao3:Â âFragile Thingsâ by @mia-cooper
âFanfic is about exploring possibilities. Thatâs what put this fic over the top to be my favorite. In Fragile Things, MiaCooper examines multiple versions of one relationship, pulling different threads to see how things unravel or knit together. Itâs thoughtful, itâs meta, itâs realistic as hell, itâs damn good writing â itâs MiaCooper and itâs excellent.â

@ariella884(yep, thatâs me!): â2013Ⲡby PCBW
âI had a hard time choosing my favorite (like most people here), mostly because as i was gathering them all from everyone else I kept seeing ones and going, âOh! I love that one!â. I also didnât want to have any duplicates so I had to change mine a couple times, that being said, 2013 is easily one of my top three (which of themselves is almost impossible to pick just one. Iâm lucky that my other two were chosen already and I didnât have to!). I love 2013 because it is a modern AU, without being a completely modern AU. No, that doesnât make sense. But you get our Janeway and Chakotay, Starfleet officers and all, and you get them in the modern world. Itâs incredible! We see the challenges they go through of being taken from everything they know and put into a world that is pretty much unknown to them. Add to that the personal differences they have to work out together. Splash in the normal challenges that we all go through when trying to live a life in this day and age (jobs, house, money, love, family, etc). This is just an incredibly beautiful story that I have read many times and will continue to read over and over. Itâs also a long fic and those are my favorite because I like to get completely involved in stories!â
ââ-
@mia-cooper:Â âDeceivingâ by QuantumSilver
âBecause it starts with a canon event that is absolutely devastating and shows just how devastated Janeway and Chakotay are by it (and Tuvok and Ayala as well, though they only make a brief appearance). It shows Janeway at her absolute best - every last inch the captain, going above and beyond for her crew not just physically but emotionally in spite of the absolutely gut-wrenching cost to her - and it really kicks off with one of my absolute favourite tropes: mutual pining to the Nth Fucking Degree.
It has Chakotay being every bit the commander, backing her up even though heâs dying inside, and REFUSING to let her shut herself away even though he KNOWS sheâs going to want to murder him for pushing and pushing and pushing at her.
And then OH MY GOD, heâs deliberately getting on her every last nerve just so he can wrench honesty from her because he knows if she doesnât tell him how badly heâs hurt her, how sheâs absolutely bottomed out because of him, she will never open up to him or anyone else again.
AND THEY DRINK WHISKEY OMG GIVE ME KJ AND C UTTERLY MISERABLE AND DRINKING WHISKEY LIKE ITâS WATER AND PINING LIKE FUCK AND NOT SAYING A WORD BUT BLEEDING TO DEATH FROM THE HEART AND I WILL DIE HAPPY FOREVERRRRRRR
Iâm sorry for yelling but this fic makes me want to rip off my clothes and run up and down the street screeching how everybody should read it and they are just BRUTAL with each other and they STILL do not understand, refuse to, CANNOT understand, that the other would not just die for them but MURDER WHOLE FUCKING ARMIES FOR THEM and itâs tragic and devastating but then oH MY GOoOoOODDDDD
So that is my favourite fic and the one i read approximately every two months or more if i really hate my writing that day and want to torture myself with How It Should Be Done.â
âââ
@bizships:Â âFealtyâ by MsDisdain
âMy favorite story. I honestly donât have to think about it. Itâs one I always go back to.
I love the way the crew pledges their loyalty to her and the way subtle way they tell her that itâs okay that sheâs happy too in that they effectively give her Chakotay for her birthday, by way of him âfightingâ Tuvok(Starfleet)Â for her hand.â
âââ
@arcadia1995:Â âThe Space Betweenâ by lauawill ( @joyful-voyager)
âThe Space Between is a story I return to time and time again when Iâm feeling down. Â I like that it realistically portrays what might have happened between Janeway and Chakotay right after the returned home in Endgame. Â I like that no one in the J/C/7 triangle ends up being a bad guy. Â I like the hopeful ending and imaging what might have happened after the fade to black (lots of sex!!!)â
ââ-
@wishful-thinker-87 :Â âif you came this wayâ by tree
âItâs always a go to for me, even though I donât usually like AUs. The sex is intense and emotional. The characterization is pot on. And we get Phoebe being an awesome sister and some Chakotay/Molly bonding too. Whatâs not to love?!â
ââ-
BlackVelvet: âBluffing the Crowdâ by Ralkana
âEven after years since i read this, just thinking about this story brings a warm fuzzy feeling to my heart and a huge silly grin to my face. I simply love it.â
ââ-
@purpledog47:Â âThe Future is Oursâ by Dawn
âMy favorite is most definitely Dawnâs âThe Future is Ours. This is my one fic. Itâs super long and it tells us what happened after Endgame and it has a little bit of everything in it: angst, romance, hurt/comfort, Q, babyfic, romance.âÂ
ââ-
@amoderngirl:Â âTime and Distanceâ by northernexposure
âIf I am ever loosing the thread with J/C, I can always read this and I am immediately in love again.â
ââ-
@coffeeblack:Â âSoft Lightâ by northernexposure
âThere are so many reasons why I love it that I canât even, haha. Iâll start with: it was the first piece of fanfic smut I read, so I love it for that reason - my first time haha. More importantly, it is just beautifully, beautifully written - itâs plotted beautifully, it flows beautifully and the pacing is spot on. The author has complete control over all of that & over the language, which is just used masterfully. Thereâs so much subtley going on in this story too - the author doesnât spell everything out for us and instead draws us to the details that reveal what is important - the beginnings of these two getting to know each other. Gosh, itâs so hard to articulate haha! But lines like this just make me shiver in delight for their beauty and what they reveal: âhe was kissing her, with a lot more sweetness than was wise. Ah god, I could go on and on but perhaps Iâll finish with my favourite bit, which is when C feels that first stab of lust & realises she might too & tests his theory by blowing softly on the back of her neck. This moment, omg, the moment is just so beautiful, so quiet, so pointed and private and intimate. You really feel that moment as if you are there. Ahhhhh :)
AlsoâŚ.there are two sequels to it that are equally as wonderful ;) Â
Oh and one more thing I adore about this story is the way that the C thinks he is lusting after KJ but it is quite obvious he loves her - even before they come together - but he hasnât realized it yet. The way the author does this is just incredible - so deft! Everything for C is about taking care of KJ ⌠itâs just beautiful.â

@caladeniablue:Â âLifelineâ by helenagray
âWhy do I like that fic? An unfinished WIP at that (Started in 2013; last update in Jan 2019. No indication how many chapters to go.) The perfect serial story and thatâs part of the attraction for me.
The first chapter sets the scene: raw Janeway, alone, without the backup of her ship, her crew or Chakotay. Bare of essentials and with only her courage and intelligence and sheer determination to help her survive, and even she wonders how long those will last her.
And while we learn about Chakotay and how he seeks her while the crew has to move on, I am drawn to Janeway most of all.
The fic jumps back and forth across locations and in time from that first chapter to catch up with it again some 20 chapters later, but there is no jarring. The reader knows immediately what KJ is experiencing , but the past events that led to that situation are as important, and thatâs one of the many attractions of this story. No overlong flashbacks, no tedious info dump. Itâs all layered, making one wait for the next chapter and the next one, while knowing all the time where KJ has ended up.
The writing is gorgeous, which is a bonus. And it is pure J/C, distilled to its purest by separation. Perfect.â

@keiraniels:Â âBad Ensignâ (Series) by @curator-on-ao3
âOk so I chose Curatorâs âBad Ensignâ because I come back to it often - - itâs such a freaking brilliant idea that I can 100% imagine being canon, and it inspired so many Voyager Bookclubbers to write Bad Ensign storiesâ
ââ-
@cnrothtrek:Â âWar Tornâ by @curator-on-ao3
âWhy? I had the pleasure of beta reading this story, and I am so glad that I did. It has a great plot, is well-written and perfectly paced, and is hard to put down. The way it pulls together two pieces of canon backstories for Miles OâBrien and Kathryn Janeway is genius. The characters feel so real and their voices can be clearly heard in the text. And the supporting characters of Captain Benjamin Maxwell, Will âStompieâ Kayden, and Molly Walsh are incredible. The story is intense, absorbing, and emotional. I just canât say enough good things about it.â

@theshortywrites:Â âThe Dragonfly Oathâ by Koneia
ââ-
@emmikamikatze:Â âAll the Good Things We Never Didâ by northernexposure
âThis story brings me to tears, makes me smile and shiver and fear and worry. Itâs given me phrases that wonât leave me, that keep repeating itself in my head even months (years) after first reading it. Thereâs just the right amount of show trivia to make it a fanfiction, but little enough to make it a unique and original story. ne makes me fall in love with these characters all over again as if I didnât know them beforehand.
This story is special and precious and it speaks to me on so many levels I can hardly comprehend how genius it is. Itâs a literary masterpiece of fanfic if there ever was one.â

@grace-among-the-stars: âFilling the Voidâ by Spiletta42
âFilling the Void is the one fic I always return to. It has my fave ships, JC, PT and D7. Minor characters play major parts and it is just funny. It makes me laugh every time.Â
JCâs relationship is really explored from all angles, this is not just your average, âthe crew get them together ficsâ, it is so much more. It has sexual tension, smut, humour, sadness and is pure JC BLISS. It always cheers me up and I was so happy when Spiletta42 added it to Ao3 because this meant so many more people would find it.â

Anonymous:Â âBent, Not Brokenâ by @killermanatee
âThis is an incredible hurt/comfort Janeway/Chakotay fic. The story is painfully written from both charactersâ perspectives, showing how each is suffering in a different way from the traumatic event that has occurred. In the end, their love for each other will help them come together and they will both be able to heal with time, comfort, and support from one another. This is a beautifully told, emotionally heavy story of one coupleâs love overcoming tragedy. It is my favorite Janeway/Chakotay fic, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to read a heartbreaking yet fulfilling story.â
ââ-
@minakotenjou:Â âMysterious and Curiousâ by H4TO8
âIt was so hard to choose - there are a lot of incredible fanfics out there. This was one of the firstâŚshall we say spicier J/C fics I read and for some reason I still think of it often. Itâs great smut for sure, but I think it stuck with me because of how it all gets tied together at the end.â
ââ-
@leisylaura:Â âThe Bitter Endâ by @mia-cooper
âWe have post endgame books but not one about the original timeline, I remember reading âThe bitter endâ and thinking âthis is it, this is what happenedâ. I cried from beginning to end.â
ââ-
@killermanatee:Â âThe Dying of the Lightâ by @cnrothtrek
âThis fic is such a gorgeous piece of art. I hadnât seen the TNG episode before reading it and when I did watch it I was very disappointed because this fic is just on such a completely different level. The storytelling is so delicate and intriguing, that combined with the poignant and elegant writing style, so that it was impossible to put my phone down. I canât recommend this fic highly enough.â
ââ-
@cheile:Â âMaroonedâ by Soliquilii9 (aka Running Horse)
âI love how she makes the story unfold in slow steady measures. Â Also, she filled in the gaps left by the writers in regards to his heritage by using information from her own Cherokee background and it is done naturally (not in an info dump type manner). â

What do you think of our list of Voyager favorites? Do you have a favorite that isnât on this list? Reply to this post with your favorite!! And if you havenât read ALL of these fics yet, I strongly suggest you get started!! Have fun and enjoy!!
All great... I think if I had to pick one favorite of all time it would be Revisionist History by Penny Proctor.
I <3 Deanna Troi
So, when I was a kid and first watching TNG, I always LOVED Deanna Troi. The year I was 12 or 13, I actually dressed up as her for Halloween, curled my hair, bought a communicator pin, and everything.Â
Since then, Iâve heard a lot of people badmouth her or say negative things about her or the stories she was involved in, but recently Iâve been doing a TNG re-watch, and I have to say, I still love Deanna Troi!
I see all the reasons that the 10-13 year-old me was obsessed with her, down to seeing Marina at a Star Trek convention and getting her signature (probably one of the best days of my pre-teen life).
I guess I can understand why todayâs audience might find her character somewhat dated or maybe not as feminist as they would like her to be, or something. But personally, I love that Deanna is the one who gets to offer advice to the captain, from very early on in the series. I love that she is a strong woman in a position of power but also keeps her femininity. I love her relationship with Will Riker, which I understand now, in my late 30â˛s, with a degree of complexity that I never understood in my teens. I love that she is sensitive, and not afraid to show her emotions or admit that she has them, while simultaneously managing to stay strong for everyone else almost all of the time. Re-watching TNG in my late 30â˛s is very different from watching it as a pre-teen, but I totally understand why I fell in love with Deanna then and still consider her to be one of my favorite characters in all of Star Trek.
I also LOVE that Troi and Riker finally got the happy ending they always deserved... one of the very few Star Trek couples that did.

Star Trek Voyager: The Fight
Episode 5.18 âThe Fightâ
Chakotay fears he is going crazy.  The Doctor tells him he thinks the aliens are reconfiguring his neural pathways to communicate with him.  Chakotay remembers a boxing simulation in the holodeck.  On the holodeck, a holodeck Boothby trains Chakotay, as he used to.  Both C and KJ had special relationships with Boothby.  âBoxing is more about taking the shots than dishing them out,â Boothby says.  âIt all comes down to the heart.  Do you have the heart for this?â  âItâs not against him; itâs against your own natural human desire not to get hurt.  Thatâs the real fight.â  In the simulation, Chakotay gets knocked out.  He wakes up in sickbay; the Doc does not approve of boxing. Chakotay is called to the bridge; Voyager encounters a strange anomaly.  Seven knows what the phenomenon is; it is chaotic space, an area of space where the laws of physics donât apply.  The Borg has seen the phenomenon.  Chakotay starts to hallucinate.  He tries to fight Tuvok, but the Vulcan subdues him with a Vulcan neck pinch.  Kathryn enters sickbay to find the Doctor singing, checking to see if thereâs any damage to the auditory or visual nerves.  Chakotay tells her about the âfamily curseâ and the Doc explains about sensory tremens. Chakotay tells Kathryn about his grandfather.  Chakotay tries to keep in good spirits, he tells her heâs âall right.â  She puts her hand on his back; she knows itâs not quite true.  He tells her about his grandfatherâs hallucinations and how he refused treatment.  âHe said his spirit was in pain but that the wound must be honored.â  Janeway looks at him with vulnerable eyes, and Chakotay laughs, brushing it off.  âCrazy old man.â  They figure out that Chakotayâs gene was somehow activated by chaotic space.  Chakotay asks to go on a vision quest, and Janeway agrees in spite of the Docâs objections.  The aliens communicate with Chakotay; heâs scared heâs losing his mind.  He says he canât do it; itâs too much.  The Doc tells Janeway that Chakotay definitely communicated with the aliens.  He tells her that medically speaking itâs safe.  Janeway touches his foot, holds his hand, puts her hand on his chest, asks him to try again.  He agrees and she touches his cheek.  Chakotayâs  hallucinations reveal that he is afraid of becoming a crazy old man.  Janeway realizes whatâs causing Chakotayâs DNA to realign.  Chakotay tells Janeway that the people who live in chaotic space are trying to communicate with him.  He uses metaphors from the boxing simulation to describe what heâs experiencing.  She trusts Chakotay even though the Doctor says heâs hallucinating.  Chakotay asks to be let back in the ring.  The Doctor warns Janeway that communication could harm Chakotay. âWhen have we ever turned away from a first contact?â Chakotay asks her. She tells the Doc to send him back in the ring.  âYouâre up against yourself,â Boothby tells Chakotay as he prepares to go into the ring.  Chakotay tells the Doc to make it stop.  The Doctor tells Chakotay that the only thing thatâs stopping him from hearing the aliens is his own fear.  Chakotay finally hears the aliens and runs to the bridge.  Chakotay runs onto the bridge.
Harry is about to lock Chakotay out, but Janeway orders Harry to give up his post and trusts Chakotay. Â No one else trusts him, but Janeway does. Chakotay gets the ship out of chaotic space. Â Chakotay nearly collapses. Â Kathryn catches him. Â KJ and C walk through the corridors. Â Chakotay says heâs going to the holodeck boxing simulation. Â Janeway teases him and lightly punches him in the stomach. Â Chakotay goes into the ring.

on depression and hurt/comfort
hereâs the thing about being depressed in real life: itâs lonely and isolating and scary and numbing and there are times when you so badly want someone, anyone to notice, but you canât bring yourself to tell them what the problem is because then theyâll know, and sometimes thereâs other terrible shit youâre dealing with in tandem and sometimes itâs just the depression, but either way, it can easily reach a point where you start wishing something visibly awful would happen to you just so youâd have a reasonable excuse to be feeling as though it already had, like it would somehow be easier to wake up wanting to die if you could blame it on something other than just your brain, if there was a cause, even though you rationally know it doesnât work like that, that it would only make things worse; and itâs messy and hard and it goes on forever and thereâs no simple catharsis, youâre often surrounded by people who donât understand or whose issues donât play nicely with yours even though youâre both trying, and you canât see a reasonable end in sight and you just want to believe that itâs going to get better -Â
and hereâs the thing about hurt/comfort in fanfiction: it takes all that fear and pain and loneliness youâre feeling IRL and channels it into characters you care about, characters who always pull through against all odds, characters whose stories you can control, characters whose lovers or friends or parents can tell them the things you wish that someone had said to you, and you know from the outset that even when theyâre bloody and crying, itâs going to get better for them, that theyâre going to be good to each other and fix each other and listen and understand, because thatâs what those stories are for, itâs what they do, and whether youâre the one writing them or reading them, they speak to that place in you that hurts, they show you it can get better, they tell you itâs not your fault, they let you feel all the grief in your life in a way thatâs safe, cathartic, hopeful, because the story brings you through the darkness and out the other side -Â
because ultimately, hurt/comfort isnât just about the characters. itâs about us being hurt and needing comfort, too. Â Â
This is so true...

Star Trek Voyager: The Disease
Episode 5.17 âThe Diseaseâ
Voyagerâs crew try to help a multi-generational ship full of xenophobic people. Janeway admits to their leader that Voyager could become a multi-generational ship as well. Â Harry falls in love with one of the Varro scientists, Tal, and begins an affair with her against regulations. Â Harry asks Seven what she thinks about romantic love. Â She says that love is a condition, similar to a disease, based on physical attraction, to facilitate procreation. Â When Harry starts to experience strange symptoms, he admits to the Doctor what happened. Â The Doctor tells Harry he has to report it to the captain. Â Janeway tells Kim that thereâs no excuse to ignore his responsibility as a Starfleet officer. Â Starfleet officers must obtain clearance from their CO in order to begin a relationship with an alien species. Â She orders him to break off the relationship. Â Tuvok and Neelix discover Varro stowaways aboard Voyager.Â
Tal tells Harry that they are experiencing âthe shared heart,â a connection that will become stronger and change both of them. Â Harry tells her heâs not allowed to see her anymore, but then decides to keep seeing her anyway. Â The Varro stowaway tells Chakotay and Tuvok that many of them feel like prisoners and that there is a movement of people who want to leave the ship. Â Janeway gives Harry a formal reprimand, and, over dinner, Chakotay suggests she reconsider. Seven and BâElanna discover that someone is sabotaging the Varro ship. Â Tal is the one who sabotaged the ship. Â Tal admits that they are trying to dismantle the vessel so that people can decide whether to go or stay. Â Janeway tells Harry to report to sickbay, but he says he doesnât want treatment. Â Harry confronts the Captain in a way that we have never seen before. Â No one but Chakotay has ever confronted her like this. Â âI have served on this ship for five years and have said, yes, maâam, to every order, but not this time.â Â He asks the captain if she has ever been in love. Â KIM: Have you ever been in love, Captain? Â JANEWAY: Your point? Â KIM: Did your skin ever flush when you were near another person? Did your stomach ever feel like someone hollowed it out with a knife when you were apart? Did your throat ever swell when you realized it was over? Seven of Nine, Seven of Nine told me love's like a disease. Well, maybe it is. Pheromones, endorphins, chemicals in our blood, changing our responses, physical discomfort, but any way you look at it, it's still love. Â JANEWAY: For the sake of argument, let's say you're right. Your feelings for Tal are no different than mine for what, the man I was engaged to marry? Well, I lost him and you're going to lose Tal. You know that. What the Doctor is offering you is a way to ease the pain. Â KIM: That man you were going to marry. If you could have just taken a hypospray to make yourself stop loving him, so that it didn't hurt so much when you were away from him, would you have done that? Voyager uses their shields to reinforce the Varro ship. Â Harry refuses to take medicine from the Doc. Â The Doc tries to order him to take his medicine, but Janeway says he doesnât have to since his condition isnât fatal. Â She tells Harry that the reprimand still stands. Â She admits to Harry that she feels differently about him than the rest of the crew; she feels protective of him. Â He says that in five years heâs changed, and maybe heâs not the perfect officer anymore, she tells him heâs a better man. Â Seven asks Harry about his refusal to accept treatment. Â He says he has a disease, but heâs willing to live with the symptoms. Â He asks her if it makes sense. Â She replies that she assumed that romantic love was a human weakness, but now she sees it can also be a source of strength. Â She says her analogy was flawed; love is not a disease.

new poster
I canât decide if Iâm completely intrigued by this and canât wait to watch it, or if Iâm terrified of what this will do to Star Trek cannon... Like, am I gonna need to write fanfic to correct what CBS does to our characters, or is it gonna be good????
