i love him
the best Vulcans in all of Star Trek are Leonard Nimoy Spock, Saavik and Tuvok
its very, very hard to do the Vulcans right but these 3 characters played by 3 amazing actors [Nimoy, Kirstie Alley, and Tim Russ] manage to pull it off
Russ as Tuvok especially, considering the bland and forgettable writing on Voyager, a show with only 3 good characters, Tuvok, Janeway, and the doctor
In defense of Kes
Ever since I started posting TikTok edits about Kes from Voyager I’ve noticed this pattern of getting comments from weird basement dwellers who are just itching to comment about how much they hate Kes, were happy that she left, and overall found her boring or annoying.
And like, I just cannot fathom how she’s either of those things? I understand if people comment that they wish the writers had done more with her or that they think she was failed by the writers, but calling her boring/annoying???
Given her limited screen time in most episodes, I do think she had some really lovely arcs in the few and far between episodes that focused on her, including:
1. Her arc with the EMH - from encouraging him to choose a name, to outright defending his right to exist and grow when Janeway wanted to reset him to save him. It culminated where the EMH manifested his anxiety and worry of losing her into hurting the man she wanted to leave voyager with! The parental father/daughter mentor/mentee relationship between them was so fascinating!
Hell, He rubbed her feet while she experienced the ocampan puberty!
2. Her moments with Tuvok where she had to learn to control her psychic powers. In one episode she nearly killed Tuvok as a consequence of exploring the depths of her abilities. When she was possessed by the warlord she even forcibly kissed him!
3. Her relationship with Neelix - dealing with his jealousy and possessiveness. I do wish the writers had never paired them together, but her breaking up with him while being possessed by an alien warlord is an all timer.
4. Her overall journey of growing and maturing as a member of an alien race with a lifespan of 12 human years. She lived a lot of her lifespan on Voyager, and seeing her train as a doctor, tend to her own hydroponics garden, and navigate the stages of her life was super interesting! The ocampa are such a fascinating race and they deserved more air time.
Unfortunately none of these arcs were neatly tied up before they wrote her off the show, but there was so much incredible potential and development already in the time we got with her.
At the end of the day, I think no matter what I say to defend her, she will be a victim of the same weird brand of fandom misogyny that has targeted Keiko, Kai Winn, and Dr Pulaski.
Harry and Kes…
…growing an herb that actually makes Neelix’s cooking palatable.
(Inspired by this post.)

STAR TREK: VOYAGER // S3E21 Before and After It's as though I came into existence at the moment of my own death, without any memories. I've been living my life backwards ever since, jumping progressively to earlier moments in my life, accumulating memories and experiences as I go. Your past has become my future.
Kes if uhh I wrote voyager I think
she is genderqyeer to me
I liked the concept of Ocampa aging quicker but it felt far too creepy for her to be fucking two years old.
Tieran possessing Kes is so Macbeth-core omg
He usurps the throne, becomes a tyrant...
He can't sleep...
He throws a banquet!
And this is Lady M and Banquo obviously:
lowkey a version of Macbeth where he possesses the body of a young woman to take the throne and then marries Banquo for 'political reasons' in order to secure his family line according to the prophecy, but then Lady M and Banquo come into moral conflict over how the kingdom should be run as Macbeth descends into madness in the fight against his host body would be fire... do you see the vision??? or is this post literally only for me
Go my Kes 🪲
kes is easily one of my favourite members of the voyager crew and while i appreciate that infinite diversity in infinite combinations means we won't enjoy the same characters, it does make me sad to see so little fanfare for her. kes is aware of her own mortality and the fleeting nature of her life in comparison to her peers and yet she does not resent them for it, she still manages to be kind, and she doesn't let it stop her from pursuing a life of knowledge. she demands respect for the emh even though it would be easier for her to just let the other crew members treat him how they wish; in the face of injustice she stands against the majority, not knowing how they'd respond. she pursues adventure rather than the safety of ocampa 5. i love you kes star trek. when i say happy birthday voyager i mean happy birthday to you
