poor little meow meow raoul gifset | lnd hamburg finale
face eating.
Ooof, feeling tired today. Anyway, the picture above is my adoring love for Edmond Dantes and Haidee. I always sort of fall back on the Count of Monte Cristo when I get into a head space. Loved the story since I was 12, never really grew out of it. I was so happy when Dantes chose Haidee and the chance to start at life again, rather than fixate on vengeance for his remaining eternity. I could draw these two embracing one another forever, because I guess I've got a romantic in me... Albeit not an active one.
Let's talk art supplies. Like I said earlier, I've got a thing for single color, and that I typically illustrate with fountain pen ink. This is from the Sailor Ink collections, Sailor Kangyou. It made for a VERY interesting medium as the ink is color shifting. The chromatographic spread of it goes from purple to a green fray. Very pretty, but difficult to control. Sailor Ink also has a bad habit of not layering super well, so definitely a fun little challenge. For reasons I cannot explain, difficult pen ink makes me happy.
Phantom of the Opera 1990 Miniseries Review
Overall, I highly recommend this miniseries. It’s a good watch, with an interesting plot and stunning visuals. The 3 hours flew past, and I was loving every moment of it. It’s not a very accurate adaptation of the book, which is completely fine. I’m not going to deduct points for the series failing to do something they never intended to do in the first place.
Thoughts on the Characters
Erik/Phantom: He’s so irresistibly gentle, with a penchant for mischief. I’m enamored with him. How could you hear: “I was born so that she could save me…she is the reason I was born. I love her…” and not completely melt? He’s giving Philippe a run for his money. Erik sounds so rational explaining all the crimes he commits/plans that I almost forget how bad it is. Blowing up the opera house? Rational. Dropping the chandelier? Rational.
Christine Daaé: Extremely endearing and such a kind soul. Very close to how I imagined book!Christine. She’s realistically innocent and well intentioned, but it’s not to the extent where you get frustrated with her.
Philippe de Chagny: I still don’t understand why they didn’t just name him Raoul, but okay. I like how they made him have a history of being a player, but he wasn’t a douchebag. He’s how I imagine book!Philippe to have been when he was younger. It’s so sweet that he’s smooth until he meets Christine (again), and then suddenly he’s all shy. He’s also VERY pretty. My eyes. Wow.
Thoughts on the Plot (!spoilers!) ↓ ↓ ↓
Idk if this has been already done, but it speaks to me to a personal level

Anyways, this is what I do instead of studying for my finals 🥰
Hey, uh. This just destroyed me. Again.
This is hands-down my favourite end-of-STYDI ever caught on camera; I've said it before but it bears repeating that this moment in the show really defines for me both how I feel about an actor's Phantom portrayal and also how I feel about the Phantom/Christine relationship going on from here. (Like, this is the deciding factor in whether I spend the next 2 hours agonising over "they could have made it work!!!" versus being 100% on board with Christine running as far away as possible.)
ANYWAY. Ana Marina. Simon Pryce. Hands.
In my opinion it really paid off that they slowed down this scene and really let everyone marinate in the discomfort of it all. I'm obsessed with how she picks up the mask and looks at it almost reverentially before giving it back to him: it means something different to her now and that gesture itself is like... almost apologetic. She strokes the edge of it??? Hello???
And then most phantoms turn away here but he maintains eye contact with her the entire time, (and she with him! She doesn't look away!) and then there's the little tilt of the head with the nod and the smile like, it's ok (please please please let it be ok?) and how his hand hovers like he wants to reach out to her but doesn't dare - his discomfort and indecision are really, really palpable and I think this comes across as him very genuinely trying to process what has just happened, it reads to me as though he has - I don't know how to phrase it - dissociated beyond the point of embarrassment? Just sitting there staring at the woman he loves as if he isn't physically present in front of her at all.
Usually I see this scene played as though he's really so unused to human interaction that he thinks grabbing her arm and running off with her is the appropriate thing to do, but here it's like. He knows it isn't appropriate or right. He knows he has messed this up and whatever he does next will only make it worse, but he has to do something and he genuinely doesn't know what to do that will make it any better.
Because they let the moment linger you can feel that he's acutely aware of how out of his depth this all is and I just, aaargh. (And also, that few seconds where neither of them does anything makes it all the more intriguing that Christine doesn't offer him anything here - ie. usually it all happens so quickly you can forgive her just sitting there in shock, but this time it isn't like that and there are a few different ways that could be interpreted, I think).
