I have a Thing to say about the donmar warehouse production of next to normal. natalie wears t shirts with cartoon characters and bands on them, she changes outfits throughout the show, she has a branded backpack. all of gabeās things are generic. his bag is plain red and generic, his clothes are plain and monochrome and the only variation is whether he has his jacket on or not (with the exception of the lab coat when heās not really gabe).
no wait I have more thoughts. looking at the other characters as well, they all have consistent costume identity. the doctors are the simplest, with a different colour shirt for each. henry is very teenage, with oversized shirts and baggy trousers, but he has identity in the bright patterns he chooses - except for the grey/green jumper he wears when natalie is avoiding him (and is likely in distress/worried/depressed), which he accessories with natalieās scrunchie.
dan is interesting, because on the surface his costume is very simple - shirt and trousers. however, the details are fun. he definitely has a sense of style, his outfits are coordinated (if you look closely in the opening number, you can see he matches his socks to his shirt). his shirts are ironed, he styles his hair, he has a nice watch, he has well-made leather shoes. his work shoes are chelsea boots rather than a generic oxford or brogue. the two times we see him not in a button down shirt are his pyjamas in the opening scene and for Iāve been/a light in the dark, one of the times he is the most vulnerable.
diana however, does not. much like gabe, all of her clothes are generic. plain blue jeans, basic white trainers, white t-shirt, black vest. she doesnāt wear any accessories. the most interesting costume piece she gets is the black coat she wears for maybe (next to normal) and so anyway. her act 1 outfit is practically straight out of a stock image. this is the wardrobe of a woman without a meaningful sense of self-identity. UNTIL. when she comes back on for light. she has a terracotta blazer, and loafers. simple changes, but signifiers of a woman figuring out who she is.

An anon asked me for Erik x Raoul in their masquerade attire. Red Death is surprisingly very easy to draw compared to Raoulās hussar uniform; my hand is dead from that;(
I havenāt been happy with my linework lately so I used this as an exercise to practice my lines.
I'm sorry in a book full of crazy side stories I firmly believe Bertuccio's is the craziest. Like what do you mean we are just launched into a tale where your brother was murdered so you ask the local police chief to investigate and he tells you no. And you immediately swear that you're going to murder him like within 30 seconds of rejection (based), just ready to go instant murder vows, and then you immediately stalk him with no difficulty and as he's carrying the corpse of his child to fucking bury you come at him with a knife and instantly kill him, only to open the coffin and somehow revive this newborn child??? Through CPR??? And you raise him as your own yet he grows up to be a horrible demon to you? Like what are we Doing here what's going on this is a random side character.

Ooof, feeling tired today. Anyway, the picture above is my adoring love for Edmond Dantes and Haidee. I always sort of fall back on the Count of Monte Cristo when I get into a head space. Loved the story since I was 12, never really grew out of it. I was so happy when Dantes chose Haidee and the chance to start at life again, rather than fixate on vengeance for his remaining eternity. I could draw these two embracing one another forever, because I guess I've got a romantic in me... Albeit not an active one.
Let's talk art supplies. Like I said earlier, I've got a thing for single color, and that I typically illustrate with fountain pen ink. This is from the Sailor Ink collections, Sailor Kangyou. It made for a VERY interesting medium as the ink is color shifting. The chromatographic spread of it goes from purple to a green fray. Very pretty, but difficult to control. Sailor Ink also has a bad habit of not layering super well, so definitely a fun little challenge. For reasons I cannot explain, difficult pen ink makes me happy.
Overall, I highly recommend this miniseries. Itās a good watch, with an interesting plot and stunning visuals. The 3 hours flew past, and I was loving every moment of it. Itās not a very accurate adaptation of the book, which is completely fine. Iām not going to deduct points for the series failing to do something they never intended to do in the first place.
Thoughts on the Characters
Erik/Phantom: Heās so irresistibly gentle, with a penchant for mischief. Iām enamored with him. How could you hear: āI was born so that she could save meā¦she is the reason I was born. I love herā¦ā and not completely melt? Heās giving Philippe a run for his money. Erik sounds so rational explaining all the crimes he commits/plans that I almost forget how bad it is. Blowing up the opera house? Rational. Dropping the chandelier? Rational.
Philippe de Chagny: I still donāt understand why they didnāt just name him Raoul, but okay. I like how they made him have a history of being a player, but he wasnāt a douchebag. Heās how I imagine book!Philippe to have been when he was younger. Itās so sweet that heās smooth until he meets Christine (again), and then suddenly heās all shy. Heās also VERY pretty. My eyes. Wow.
Thoughts on the Plot (!spoilers!) ā ā ā
It was a bit jarring to see Christine and Philippeās relationship be rewritten to this extent (from book!Raoulstine). However, I like how they were still childhood friends, and were connected by music, in a way. Obviously not as much as her and Erik, but still. Having them already know each other also makes their relationship not seem so rushed, considering the storyās short time span.
The unmasking scene was my favorite, and also obliterated my heart. Good griefā¦Christine was so well intentioned, but unfortunatelyā¦sigh. For a moment there, it actually felt like Erik and Christine could have something. I just feel sorry that it went the way it did.
Iām conflicted about the miniseriesā decision to not show Erikās face to the audience (besides in childhood flashbacks). On one hand, the audience does not deserve to see his face. We are nothing to him. Christine and his mother get to see it, and thatās enough. Heās not to be put on display for strangers to gawk at. And frankly, the exact nature of his features is not the point. The reactions from Christine are enough. On the other hand, I can see how people might find the lack of a reveal to be a let down.
