Evil Comes In Pairs

“Oo you’re going to build this whole city back to it’s old glory?” Addie teased him gently, nudging him to make him smile. While he was talking, she slowly pulled out her polaroid that was never too far away. “You wouldn’t be pulling it, you’d be running the whole operation.” She reminded Kai before leaning back and quickly taking a picture of Kai looking at the computer screen with a grin on his face, “Perfect.”

“Stop it.” Addie’s head shot up but her eyes were sparkling, “Are you serious? You’re really going back to school?” She hopped up and scooted closer to the laptop, “I don’t know but I can probably figure it out! Or we can find way cheaper ones on those weird websites. What prompted this?”

“Wow.” Was all Mitch managed to get out. Going back to school was always a possibility that lingered in the back of his mind, he just never had the balls to actually go for it. “Congratulations. But uh, yeah, I’m not gonna be a lot of help here. I’ve got no idea about this stuff.”

“I don’t know jack shit about online classes or school in general. Did you get assigned an adviser or someone that could help?”

“Are you seriously looking at me thinking that I can help with this?” Liz couldn’t help but laugh a little at the realization that he was serious. “Sorry dude– wouldn’t have a fucking clue. You’re looking right at the chick who skipped more than half of her classes because she couldn’t be arsed attending in the first place.”

“Hm – most online textbooks have their own portals, but you might need an access code – have you checked your email? It might be in your spam folder,” she advised. “Once you’ve got that, it should let you in, no sweat.”

“Do I look like a guy who knows how to get textbooks online?” Zach asked with a furrowed brow.

“You’re not really askin’ the best person. College dropout here,” Charlie said. “And then all of my books were actual books, not anything online. Wish I could help more.”

“I have no idea. I would just call and ask the school bookstore. They’re very helpful. They’ve always shown me how to do it which is great since I suck with computers,” She explained. “Congrats on going to school. Nothing wrong with starting later in life. I started late myself.”

“Okay, so, a little change in the plan, but I’m officially registered for classes. It says my books are online, but it won’t let me register them? Do you know how to fix this?” He asked, looking up from the lap top he got from the school to give attention to his company. “I haven’t been to school in... A decade now.”

Addie let Kai get comfortable and, although she sensed he was a tad uncomfortable, she wasn’t at all. In fact this was the most comfortable she had felt in months. Addie laced their fingers together and used her free hand to run lines up and down the arm that was draped across her stomach. “Laying down usually, don’t worry about me, I’m comfortable. Really comfortable.” 

Addie didn’t want to think about the next day, she didn’t want to think about what this meant for their friendship. She just wanted to be with Kai and enjoy the night with him. “She’s fabulous but she’s evil.” Addie reminded Kai before rolling over to grab her own phone that was blowing up just as expected. Addie silenced it, but answered Lydia with a promise they’d talk in the morning. “She’ll show up here if we’re not careful and honestly, I think that’d be fun for about 5 minutes and that’s pushing it.”  Addie reached out her hand for Kai, “C’mere.”

The smile that lit up Addies face when Kai agreed to stay was one that hadn’t been there in a very long time. “Good.” She rolled off of him and hurried to her closet to put on pajama shorts and a tank top while he texted Lydia and Jeb. She kept an eye on her own phone, half expecting it to blow up from Lydia once she had gotten Kais message. Addie climbed back on the bed, behind Kai, and kissed his cheek before going and climbing under her covers for keep warm and get comfortable. She threw back the other side of the comforter, “Come on. They’ll figure it out, Lydia knew you were coming here that’s what she does.”

Nothing had ever felt more right than her lips on Kai’s. There was a part of her brain that wanted to analyze all of this and completely explode, but she was best at silencing that part of her brain when she wanted to. The assurance that he was okay with what they were doing and actually initiated more set her body on fire. She was sure her face was absolutely beet red, but luckily it was dark enough that she could get away with it. Addie settled into him, letting the perfection of the moment wash over her. Just friends was no longer, but what that meant was a conversation for another day, “Stay tonight?” She asked between kisses. It wasn’t a weird thing, one of them staying at the others, but there was a different connotation this time she asked.
