"I can't believe humans would hunt the thylacine to extinction, humans are fundamentally evil" Hey, did you know that extinction was long thought to be impossible, and within 50 years of humans realizing that extinction via overhunting was a possibility it practically stopped happening? Did you know that humans are so desperate to prevent more losses that they're funneling millions of collective hours and billions of euros into helping other species? Hours and euros that could be spent on humans, and species on whom humanity's own survival does not depend? Did you know that due to an accidental introduction of rats, the Lord Howe Island stick insect population was brought down to 24 individuals and now there are tens of thousands of them?
This bug. This bug that, to most humans, is utterly useless, relatively gross, and completely foreign. Humans saved it because humans do not want to cause another extinction ever again if they can avoid it.
So every year, my aquarium does a captive lobster hatchery project (hence all the loblings). The reason weāre doing it is because in the wild, loblings only have a 1 in 25,000 chance of surviving their larval phase. Theyāre plankton as babies and everything eats them. Additionally, as the Gulf of Maine warms, they are having even lower survival rates because the blooms of copepods they feed on as babies are happening earlier in the year, and theyāre missing it.
Obviously, the goal of this experiment is to grow the lobsters until theyāre big enough to settle to the seabed and then release them, because they have a much higher likelihood of surviving to adulthood when theyāre able to hide. Ideally, captive lobster hatcheries can boost the wild population and keep things stable, so we donāt have a major crash in a decade or two.
The first year we tried this was pretty bad. We had a lot of eggs, but very few babies. It turned out that the CO2 levels in the building spiked as more guests visited throughout the summer, and that settled into the water and threw off the pH and caused a chemical reaction that prevented a lot of the eggs from hatching. I think we ended up releasing three baby lobsters (which is still better than their wild survival rate but not great).
The second year was a little better. We added a de-gasser to the aquarium and got a ton of larval lobsters, but right as they were settling to the bottom we had a disease outbreak that killed most of them. We ended up releasing four babies at the end of the season.
But this year? Oh boy. We have so many lobsters that we had to release the first round early (usually we wait till September or October so guests can see them). We just released a total of FIVE HUNDRED AND TWENTY FIVE baby lobsters, and we still have over a hundred who havenāt settled to the bottom yet. I genuinely donāt even have words to explain how cool this is. OVER FIVE HUNDRED. We just added hundreds of lobsters to the wild population that wouldnāt have been there otherwise.

The rise of androgyny and unisex fashion in the 1970s was apparently responsible for the introduction of a sex marker in passports.
Oh wow so me saying "no government documentation should ever include a gender marker for any reason" has been right all along. For exactly the reason I stated when people were giving me shit for not supporting x markers on documents.

āSo... We got the exploding diarrhea. Here's my advice for anyone who doesn't have it yet:
It's going to take a minute for the government to pin down where this is coming from, and then issue a recall, because the FDA has been gutted. But, I can tell you, without a shadow of a doubt : this is coming from Taylor Farms produce, and you will see them recalled.
You'll want to avoid all Taylor Farms produce in the grocery store. They supply McDonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut, about any fast food place you can think of.
Raspberries, watermelons, cilantro, and the veggies you're hearing about are not causing this many people to get sick. It's the shredded lettuce, specifically, that's the problem. But, you'll want to stay away from every type of produce this company puts out, because one strand of shredded lettuce is all it takes to contaminate bushels.
Taylor Farms is the source. Taco Bell proactively pulled their produce from their restaurants. You're going to see other fast food places doing this, and probably will see that before the government names a source. The FDA knows this, but they can't come out and tell us all until there's proof, which takes resources and research, which takes manpower, but the FDA has been cut by about 20-30%
During the Biden term, onions at McDonald's had ecoli. We knew this because DNA testing was done quickly and they were able to narrow it down to one place that caused the outbreak. And, it was traced back to Taylor Farms. This isn't going to be solved as quickly though.
When you get this, make a virtual appointment to your PCP - a "same day sick" appointment. Tell them someone in your family just tested for this and was positive and was prescribed Bactrim. If you go in person, they're probably going to make you poop in a cup and wait until results come back to prescribe.
You'll know when you get this. Trust me on all of this.
You'll want to stay hydrated because this parasite damages the lining of the small intestine. Your small intestine, in turn, secretes more water into the gut, and less nutrients and liquid are able to remain in the body. So no matter how much you shit, you're going to want to drink. A day of this leads to dehydration if you don't increase your fluid intake, and a few days will land you in the hospital.
If you have headaches, weakness, muscle cramps, dizziness, or an increase heart rate - hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Go to the ER for fluids if you can't drink enough.
Thank you for coming to my Ted talk. Brought to you by America's 250 birthday celebrations, workforce reduction in the FDA and CDC, and viewers like you.
Please feel free to share this.
And, MAGA - don't blow up the comment section. I argued with y'all on COVID bc I was afraid y'all would die, but I really don't care if you get explosive diarrhea.
And no, ivermectin will not help this at all.ā
Well, OP was very much correct!

Theres the lil thang
Flash lighting automatically makes a drawing feel more real and i really like that
I've been meaning to make a post talking about my stroke because y'all got bits and pieces of the recovery but I never actually told the story of HOW it went down and the thing is the type of stroke I had is usually the type young people have and since having mine i've now heard multiple stories of people under 40 having very similar strokes and the scary thing is, is that they didn't get help right away. Because you're young and healthy and sure you feel weird but it'll pass right? but it doesn't, and it gets worse, and by the time you get to the hospital (some people literally take days to go) the deficits are worse and recovery is harder.
so here's a super long post about strokes in general, and mine in particular/what I went through.
the trolley problem except the guy tied to one set of tracks is your friend and someone you trust and one of the few people in the world that you genuinely like and he's begging for his life and he's saying that you're murdering him and he's screaming and clawing and running like a wild animal. on the other set of tracks is every living thing on the planet. its a no brainer, obviously. but he will still scream. this happened to my good friend eva stratt
Me, finishing my cocktail: āMan, I should make that post. Really kick the hornetās nest.ā
Pip: āYou should. Drinky post time!ā
Me: āItās gonna make people really mad.ā
Pip: āTime to hurt some š¶feeeeeeeliiiiiingsšµ~!ā
They gotta stop aging Robin up I swear to god. Heās like fully an adult man half the time and it fucking sucks. Make him recognizably a child or donāt bother including him at all. āBut it makes people uncomfortableā yeah dude! Because it is! Youāre never going to make it okay so make it interesting! Make it mean something! Like Robin is fully just a grooming story. I donāt mean sexually but itās a narrative about a man convincing himself that his relationship with a kid is so special and unique that the normal boundaries between child and adult can be suspended, that the childās circumstances and capabilities and needs are so extraordinary that they are rendered a kind of un-child, and that the scale of their eagerness and want counts as consent. Robinās already traumatized, so what is there to lose?
Everyone wants Batman to be morally complicated so they make him a huge douchebag for no reason but flinch away from the actual parts of his character that are really troubling. The āis it wrong to have Robin?ā question is always brought up and then neatly solved in a way that absolves Batman. But like. One of Batmanās most consistent character traits is that heās able to convince himself of anything no matter how stupid.
Batman is a hyper-intelligent, hyper-powerful Sherlock Holmes character piloted by the ghost of a lonely child. Heās a genius who uses his intelligence to justify acting upon the emotional impulses of an 8 year old with horrific trauma and unmet needs. He uses children for his own emotional gratification and convinces himself that, while it might not be right, itās not wrong enough to stop doing it.
And, well, many such cases!
Honestly I think the cognitive dissonance of like a 9 a year old Robin does so much more to establish Bruce as a psychologically complicated and morally gray character than any amount of the pointless assholery people just keep piling on to his personality.
TBH I actually think itās even weirder in stories where the larger DCU and other child heroes exist.
The higher the stakes, the more Batman has to be depicted as The Most Specialist Smartest Boy In The Whole Entire Universe to justify pitting him against intergalactic psychic wizard tigers from beyond time. His importance scales with the stakes. Everyone has to be awed and impressed with him at all times.
Other sidekicks have psychologically fraught relationships with their mentors but somehow Robin and Batman are always weirder. Robin is written like heās in an abusive cult but because itās Batman leading it, this is treated like itās ultimately a good thing.
Also the āand they all look Just Like Bruceā thing is so under-explored. Even in the more Bruce-critical stories itās treated like a total coincidence that Batman keeps finding little blue-eyed, black-haired, light-skinned boys that all mysteriously share the same disease for which the only treatment is becoming an extension of Bruce Wayne and a mirror into which he can stare at himself.
Weird that this disease only affects kids who are Bruceās Typeā¢ļø but ummm itās fine because word of god says it was the best and only viable choice for them.

Wait I need to be able to reblog this
WHALEWALKER - versipellis orcinusthropiaĀ
By weaving animal skins with threaded runes and shifting magic, peltmelders are able to create a transformative animal hide that lets them take the shape of the skins last owner. This magic has long been practised by mages across the continent, from the Otterfolk of the Pinelands, to the Walruk of the Blacksand Beaches. By taking the form of beasts, these magicians can hunt, travel, and live untethered by their humanity. Most well known of this family are the Selkies of the Northern Plateaus. For generations, the Selkies have created and maintained magical hides that let them assume the form of a seal, perfect for cutting through the frigid waters of The Blinding Sea. But as the moon waxes in the night sky above, for one night these hunters become the hunted.Ā Curses, hexes, and other magical transformations have often perplexed me in regards to whether they should be classified alongside more ānaturalisticā animals, but the more I study and the more I see, it is apparent that no matter the origin, these creatures truly are beasts, and deserve to be understood as such. As for that origin, there are many legends surrounding the story of the first Whalewalker. As far as the stories I could gather, many of these tales share a similar heart. Long ago, a Selkie magician left to hunt at sunrise. Around his waist, his shimmering pelt caught the morning sunshine, and as he donned the fur he turned from one familiar shape to another. His stomach growled that morning, and swim as he might, his eyes could not spot a single fish in the icy depths. After hours of fruitless search, finally, something swam in the waters just ahead of him. Dappled in the morning sunshine, a beautiful silver seal played among the waves.Ā Now, his whole life he had been told what all Selkies had been told - another seal is never to be hunted. Not only could that seal be family, but respect should be shown to the beast whose form was stolen by his kin. But the stomach of the Selkie growled, and gripped by hunger, the man inside took over. In a flurry of thrashing limbs, he ripped at her fins with his teeth, tearing at her side, and staining the blue waters a dark red. But you see, this seal he had decided to hunt was no ordinary seal. In fact, the silver seal was The Moon herself, taking an icy swim after a long night shining through the sky.Ā As the man tasted the moon's blood in his mouth, he felt his body shift, his seal pelt sloughing away, sinking in the cold water. But even with his skin ripped away, he kept changing, his fingers extending, webbing, his mouth widening and nostrils pulled painfully up. The moon fled from the man, swimming to the surface and jumping from the water back up to the sky. He swam after her, and she laughed down at his twisted new form from the heavens. In his mouth he could still taste her, and in his heart all he craved for was to finish his meal. Now, those afflicted by her curse shift every full moon into the walking whales that hunt for the seal flesh of their kin. Like common lycanthropy, this curse can be spread in the form of a bite, and besides immediate amputation of the affected area, the curse has no known cure. There is most certainly a sympathy for those affected by the curse, and communities across the coast have been destroyed by its unforgiving nature. And those at the heart of such catastrophes live on with the memories of their families cries, the texture of their flesh in their gullet, a life doomed to feel a stranger in their own skin, clicking and whistling at The Moon, forever hungry to taste her blood again
