I was already pretty left-leaning, but my full jump occurred when I learned just how little money you were allowed to have to qualify for food stamps. At first I thought, "That's sensible since we don't want to give rich people free food." Thankfully my immediate next thought was, "Wait, why do I care if a rich person got a free meal if it means someone in great need gets to live?"
