me, searching through my music library: maybe I should listen to something more calming to help with my writing
also me: but wait, that one Specific Songâ˘ď¸ I need to listen to is a metal song and I will not be able to write if I don't start listening to it
VIRGOMOON'S BLACK MUSIC COLLECTION: a series of playlists where i collect black artists from various genres to showcase the talent of my community; particularly that outside of typical genres you see us in.
black people created rock btw: my magnum opus. as the title suggests, here is rock music made by black people or bands that feature at least one black musician, particularly the lead singer and/or songwriter. classic rock, pop punk, hardcore, punk rock, goth, and more. this includes rap rock remixes and rock inspired rap tracks. songs range anywhere from the 60s to now.
a southern gothic tale: this playlist is just like the above, except featuring black artists who make primarily country music. there's bluegrass, folk, blues, and the like here. including covers and crossover songs. again, older music as well as newer tracks are featured here.
black alternative: black music that isn't just generic "pop", "rap", or "rnb". nothing wrong with those genres, of course, but obviously, we make all kinds of music and deserve to be recognized there too. here you'll find hyper-pop, bedroom pop, indie pop, dark pop; all those trendy sub - genres.
juicy fruit, certified bubble yum: bonus points if you know the song the title is from. anyway, here's bubblegum pop by black artists because for some reason black pop girls get labeled as "urban" and "rnb" when they're not? not necessarily? music from the 80s and on.
black girl punk!: punk and punk adjacent music from alternative black women in music. including fem presenting artists.
we've always been here: a new addition to the collection! this is every song from the various playlists collected into one major playlist. the only missing one is juicy fruit, as i wanted to showcase more unknown / underground artists and/or the songs from known artists that are a little more obscure because they're showcasing alternative genres than what we're used to from them. for example, don't hurt yourself from beyonce. a blues rock song from a known pop artist. still adding music to it as of april 2025.
nobody:
my AuDHD brain while I'm TRYING to write: hey, so do you wanna go and do something else?
Remember that you started your WIP for a reason.
You loved the idea.
You loved what the idea brought to the table.
You loved a scene you had envisioned.
There was something that made you passionate enough about it to start it. Try to remember that when you start to feel down on your writing. Try to remind yourself what you love about your writing.
There's this old series I did on an old blog called "Reasons I Love." It was a very long and wonderful series of posts where I'd write out why I loved my characters and WIPs. I think everyone should do that when they start to doubt themselves. Remind yourself what you love about it when you're drowning in self-doubt and needing reassurance.
Remember that your writing is wondrous and deserves so much love and support... and remind yourself that you deserve to love your writing, not constantly be filled with self-doubt and insecurities. đŠľ
You've got this.
Happy writing. đ
I needed this, thank you đĽš

my coworker: are you living the dream, [deadname]?
me, mentally: if I had a six- or seven-figure book deal and was able to transition, I'd be living the dream
hi, i have a quick question about writing an autistic character stimming! i want to include it, but i know lots of stims are somewhat subconscious. i'm writing from the pov of the autistic character who isn't hyper-aware of her stimming behaviors, and i don't want someone to point them out and make her self conscious.. do u have any advice about how to write this so the reader can recognize the stim but not make it feel forced?
so this is four years overdue and I truly feel awful about it đ
so if you're writing from the pov of the autistic character, I definitely would describe the movement of the body or the specific part that's moving, but I wouldn't go explicitly labeling it as stimming for two reasons: one, so the reader themselves can gather context clues and start to piece two and two together, and two, tying in a bit to the previous reason is the "show, don't tell" piece of advice that's so commonly given out by other authors. as for the self-conscious part... I honestly have zero idea, I get self-conscious about my stimming, as well, unfortunately... part of growing up socialized as a "girl" who's actually transgender... especially the judgemental stares, oh my god đ
also a lot of autistic people tend to stim out of boredom or because of emotions, so I would definitely include that, too. for me, I tend to pace around a lot to keep my boredom at bay when I am at work, otherwise, I would genuinely lose my fucking mind, especially since I get told off for bringing a book and reading it when I have the free time, but when I have to keep my emotions at bay, I tend to not move my body around because masking my autistic traits sucks
again, I apologize for this being four years late, and I genuinely hope this helps at least somewhat!
nobody:
me, trusting my writing process after writing down character traits, making a playlist for the vibes, and getting some semblance of plot brainstormed: the inner machinations of my mind are an enigma
nobody:
me with any character detail whatsoever that I remember at a later point in time: oh right, the detail, the detail for the character, the detail specifically chosen to give to the character, the character's detail... that detail?
my wip be like:
religious abuse and church horror but make it extra fucking fruity

most writer friends I know: hey so I'm writing a fantasy/romance novel
my unhinged, horror-loving ass: the only thoughts and prayers I need is the goddamned Motionless In White song. seriously. just don't pray for me when you read about what goes on in the inner machinations of my disturbing mind. I promise I'm calling out a bunch of fucked up shit in this world.
In hindsight it's very insulting to be told that flunking out of college due to adhd is actually "quite common"
just like, if there's a history at your institution of disabled kids not being able to make it you realise that's your fault right. like why don't you fucking do something about it. i guess they tried to do something about it with me and it failed so they let me go. crazy. nice work. why should we try to do any better.
only 5% of people with adhd who go to college finish a degree. FUCKING. FIVE!!! PERCENT!!!!!!!!!!!
that should disgust and enrage you.
if any other demographic of students had a 95% failure rate, we would be demanding reform and studies to understand why thatâs happening
when i was at my first university, trying to get accommodations for my ADHD, they just kept asking me what accommodations i wanted, and refused to answer when i would ask what was available to me. how the Hell am i supposed to know what i can have? whatâs available???? also, i donât know!!!! iâm an adhd sufferer, not a fucking disability expert for the fucking college, unlike you, DISABILITY EXPERT WHO WORKS FOR THE COLLEGE.
but because the us is OBSESSED with making sure no one gets anything ââfor freeââ, she literally would not tell me what my options were until i broke down in tears and asked her why she was refusing to help me. and then she did a big sigh, like i was fucking up her entire career by *checks notes* asking the disability center in my university to help me, a disabled student
at the second uni i went to, i tried to explain to a dean that i was literally two gen eds that had nothing to do with my degree away from graduating and that i was burnt out and broke and exhausted and suicidal and i just needed to be able to finish my degree without the gen eds. and this. fucking. guy. looked me right in my face and said in the most patronizing tone he could muster âif you canât handle it, then maybe college just isnât for you.â keep in mind that up until that semester, i had been an honor student who made Deanâs List every semester and didnât get below Bs. if it hadnât been for my mental breakdown, i would have graduated cum laude, maybe even summa cum laude.
but this dean of students looked a disabled person right in the face and said well i guess you just canât do it, short bus
Pulled these from a couple articles really quick but yeah the statistics are not kind. I remember writing a scathing essay about my issues with ADHD and college as part of an assignment for academic probation. I got back an email calling me entitled and lazy. Somehow, this thread helps me feel a lot better. I still have about a semester of school unfinished that Iâm unsure if Iâll finish but⌠yeah. Makes me feel better to know itâs not just me.
PSA: The Job Accommodation Network maintains a searchable database of accommodation suggestions for a wide variety of disabilities.
The full database can be accessed here and the ADHD page is here. The full database can be filtered by disability, by limitation, by work-related function, by topic, and by accommodation. Many of these accommodations are applicable to academic settings as well as the workplace.
Here are the section headers for ADHD accommodations ideas to give an overview of what the page contains - this post would become Do You Love the Color of the Accommodation if I attempted to list them all here
The ADHD page linked above also includes case examples and strategies for determining what sort of accommodations might be necessary. More broadly, the JAN website as a whole is a treasure trove of information related to the Americans with Disabilities Act and resources for both individuals and employers.
ADHD and learning disabilities in general are so fun because you can be dignosed with a disability, show your papers showing you have a disability and everyone agrees you have said disability, yet every single time you struggle or are /disabled/ in some way because of it you are just told "Oh, everyone's like that. Try harder."
AuDHD here. Had to quit community college because it was too soon after high school graduation for me to attend. Going back this fall so I can obtain a degree. If more ADHD students were accomodated to in college, the graduation rate would be MUCH higher than an abysmal five percent, because guess what? ADULTS CAN HAVE ADHD TOO, YOU DONâT âGROW OUT OF IT!â
reader: hey uh kaedynce can you please stop traumatizing your characters

sometimes writing isnât actually putting a pencil or a pen to paper, making spotify playlists for your wip, or making the most aesthetic-looking pinterest board out there
sometimes writing isnât even reading your favorite books and analyzing them like a writer
sometimes writing is just playing a fucking video game and wondering which character your wipâs babies would choose
