Because Toei was desperately trying to win back fans after disappointing everyone with the first 2 seasons. Most people were disappointed by the lackluster animation that Toei didn’t provide the animators enough time and money for, but there was also a vocal contingent of 90s fans who were mad Crystal was so different from the 90s anime. Even though, you know, that was the entire fucking point of the reboot.

The reboot sadly never recovered from so many people dropping it in the first two seasons. Most of the hype was lost and people stopped paying attention. Even after it VASTLY improved starting in S3, most people weren’t even aware of it. I distinctly remember seeing tons of posts from people finding clips from S3 onwards and being like “WAIT, THE ANIMATION IS GOOD NOW???”

Anyway, I believe all the 90s anime pandering from S3 onwards was a desperate attempt from Toei to attract more viewers- viewers who remembered and had nostalgia for the wildly popular 90s anime. Plus, knowing Toei, I bet they assumed the first two seasons were unpopular because they strayed too far from the familiar 90s anime.

I also need to throw some shade at a certain subgroup of the Sailor Moon fandom. These are people who absolutely refuse to engage with Sailor Moon outside of the 90s anime. They get upset and complain about the manga, musicals, live action show, etc because they’re too different from their beloved 90s anime.

Let me be absolutely clear and say that if you prefer and/or have only seen the 90s anime, that’s absolutely fine!! That’s not what the issue is. The issue is that certain 90s fans were very loud about their complaints for Crystal and hated that it followed the manga instead of the original anime. They put it down at every turn and made pretty bad faith arguments. I was on the trenches defending Crystal over a decade ago so I saw a lot of this firsthand. And it wasn’t just the English-speaking fandom, there were Japanese fans who did this behavior, too.

anime fans need to realize they’re under enemy spells when they think mamoru in general is a horrible canon love interest.

as nostalgic and charming as the 90’s anime is— i really wish they didn’t just rewrite half of the actual story… let alone ruin such a charming character like him.

like excuse me??? mamoru is supposed to be a sweet and kind gentleman. a walking green flag if you will. whatever that THING was that happened to burrow it’s way into the sailor moon universe just to hurt and be distant to usagi? yeah, that IS NOT my goat.

canon is what happens in the text. e.g. merlin tries to poison morgana

a headcanon is a fact that you have personally made up as an elaboration of canon. it is your invention. e.g. i think morgana and gwen had a teenage lesbian situationship before the events of canon. or, i think modern morgana would love evanesence.

an interpretation is how one reads the existing text. it is not an invented fact nor is it a headcanon, it is a reading. e.g. i think merlin tries to poison morgana out of misplaced self-hatred. or, i think that one line was delivered with suppressed malice and shows a nuanced relationship.

fanon is the general fandom’s accepted headcanons and interpretations that elaborate or recontextualize canon. e.g. merlin is a badass waif and morgana is a bitch.
