For the anti-porn and anti-prostitution, there has been a concerted "pro sex worker" push, and for many they want to support the women involved in porn and prostitution so there's less reaction because pro sex worker sounds supportive, even though that philosophy harms the women involved. Additionally the further removed women are from porn and prostitution the less likely they are to have it on their daily radar as an issue.

Trans issues affect many women, and even if a woman herself doesn't see any impacts in her personal life, it's an easy jump to see how the issues could affect her or her friends and family. It's also a pretty talked about political and social issue at this point, so it comes up frequently in news and social media which keeps it relevant and talked about.

Then 2015 happened. Gay marriage became legal, Caitlyn Jenner came out, and trans went mainstream. There was a massive misinformation campaign against the Stonewall movie. Lies about Marsha P Johnson being a transwoman who gave gay people all their rights flooded tumblr. It didn’t matter that this was an easily debunkable fact. Fear mongering about 1 in 12 transwomen and 1 in 8 black transwomen being murdered was being treated like gospel. “Sources? Why would you need sources? We’re in the middle of a trans genocide!” Transgender people were liberals’ new pet cause and gays were now “privileged” for having basic legal protection. “TERFs” became the new boogeymen, and you know who the “TERFs” were? Lesbians! Why? The answer is twofold.

Second wave lesbian radfems At the start of the second wave of feminism there was the lavender menace. Homosexuality had fairly recently been decriminalized and now women were fighting for autonomy. Before the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, women were very financially dependent on their husbands so you can see how freeing the second wave was for lesbians. However liberal feminists were afraid that men wouldn’t support feminism if lesbians were involved and fought to keep them out. “Radical Feminist seeking male approval” would be seen as a joke then even more then than it would now so that’s where lesbians went. Lesbian and radfem Womyn’s culture were intertwined. In the 1970s a lot of heterosexual men became transwomen. (I’ve heard that was the shift from the trans community being majority HSTS to AGP but that’s oral history and cannot verify) These men were very interested in lesbians. Before bathroom bills and self ID they were fighting to get into lesbian spaces. Michfest was a radical feminist lesbian music festival and a major hub of our culture. Transwomen tried to force their way in from the beginning. I’ve read so many stories of them exposing themselves to festival goers and protest with homemade weapons. One of the protest leaders, Dana Rivers, finally snapped and murdered a lesbian couple and their son. Michfest was shut down in 2015 due to the political climate. 2. “genital preferences”

So what about modern lesbians? Most of them were trans allies and had never heard of Michfest or radical feminism. In the mid to late 2000s, when I was a teenager, transmen were a beloved part of the lesbian community. Being butch was looked down (The big activist push towards hets at the time was “gays are just like you so please let us get married!” Which meant masc/masc gay and femme/femme lesbian couples) but transmen were seen as very desirable. Lucas Silveira was a sex symbol. It made transwomen furious. They seriously hated us. Transfemmes don’t really like transmen now, but it’s nothing like back then. Transmen were almost completely HSTS then and dated lesbians. Transwomen viewed us as the obstacle keeping them from their lesbian fantasy life. (There was a transwoman, whose name I can’t remember, who said AGPs were so angry because they thought that lesbians would be their reward for transitioning)

The cotton ceiling was coined in 2012. Transwomen argued that it was unfair that lesbians would befriend them, use preferred names and pronouns but wouldn’t sleep with them. It was named after “the glass ceiling” a term used to describe the barriers to upper management positions women had to face in male dominated work places. Yes, lesbians’ underwear were a barrier for trans women to break through.

Tensions kept rising until 2015 when trans rights became tumblr’s favorite topic. Fear mongering about trans women being murdered at genocidal rates, the lies about stonewall, “misgendering is violence”, and of course their favorite topic “dating discrimination”! If you were a lesbian and wouldn’t date a transwoman it must mean you didn’t see them as women and “misgendering was violence” which deserved violence in return. It became a trend to describe what deserved to happen to them if they wouldn’t date them. “If you’re a cis lesbian and won’t date a transwoman you deserve to be pistol whipped!” “I’ll curb stomp you!” “You deserve to raped with a barbed wire bat!” Lesbians were the default “terf” and the death threats and other disgusting messages TRAs send to “terfs” started out as response to their “sexual exclusion”. One explanation I saw was that lesbian refusing to date transwomen stopped the rest of society seeing them as women and that made men murder them. 🤡

I was completely shocked. I was a transman at the time and was quickly becoming disillusioned with the current state of the trans community. So I went to check out what the “evil” radfems were saying. All the things that I noticed but had to push to back of my mind were being openly discussed. Transwomen’s male socialization, HSTS not having straight privilege, the “genital preference” discourse being the same thing gay people have been told forever in a new progressive skin. So many of the accounts belonged to dysphoric lesbians who had recently desisted or detransitioned, and I found out there was a group of lesbians who became radfems after criticizing the cotton ceiling in 2012 and being labeled “radscum”. I’m sure they felt vindicated after so many lesbians fled to radical feminism in the 2015 political climate! Lesbians were now being attacked from the left as well as the right. Our spaces were “exclusionary” and needed to changed into queer ones to be welcoming to everyone who wasn’t a lesbian. Even joking about liking pussy could get you excommunicated. Transwomen came to pride with baseball bats and we knew who they wanted to intimidate with them. Radical Feminism was the one space we could be free to be ourselves. It felt like the home of exiled lesbians.

Spotlighting key female risktakers and icons of the metal genre, the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame's newest exhibit featurette, "Women In Metal: You Will Know My Name", will open at the museum on July 10. This exhibit celebrates those who push boundaries and challenge the status quo to make meaningful, pioneering efforts in the metal genre.

The artists featured in "Women In Metal" exemplify what it means to defy the typical labels of womanhood. With powerful lyrics, assertive personas, and unapologetic rage, these women have been key figures in bringing metal to the masses and continue to influence future generations of musicians to be true in their own expression.

The exhibit will boast artifacts covering the breadth of women who have taken the metal world by storm, spanning time, place, and sonic quality, including Lita Ford, Lzzy Hale (HALESTORM),Alissa White-Gluz (ARCH ENEMY, DRAGONFORCE),Taylor Momsen (THE PRETTY RECKLESS),Courtney LaPlante (SPIRITBOX) and many more, curated by the Rock Hall's assistant curator Haley Cronin.

"Women have been pivotal influencers and changemakers in the metal genre since its inception," says Cronin. "We are excited to tell the stories of those women who stand firmly and courageously at the forefront of innovation and acceptance, and through their raw power pave the way for all girls who just want to rock."

The exhibit will open to the public on July 10 with a celebration featuring Lzzy Hale and Joe Hottinger of HALESTORM. Hale and Hottinger will play a short acoustic set on the outdoor PNC Stage, followed by a slate of metal bands: STORMS WITHIN, MAXILLA and REIGN OF Z.

"I'm so proud to be a part of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame's 'Women In Metal' exhibit," says Lzzy. "I'm honored to stand next to my sisters of scream.
