tom wambsgans' win delusion based on his damn watch.
i have to disagree with GQ's analysis on this one—that his choice of the audemars royal oak "reeks of clueless WTF-ery." this watch has too much rich history/overlap with the current season.
released at a time when the watchmaking world was in a period of upheaval: "the cards were being reshuffled and many people rightly sensed that a major earthquake was imminent."
coined, 'the quartz crisis' – this devastating period for mechanical watchmakers was marked by mass lay-offs...
with many swiss watchmaking companies in particular on the "precipice of financial ruin..."
amid the turmoil, audemars released it's royal oak design, which had "no immediate take-off" and became the "target of visible criticism."
most notably, the "clasps were perceived as too large, the tapering shape of the bracelets had to be compensated for by adding studs, and the additional links [were scarce]."
and yet, somehow, the royal oak took off in sales and managed to "save the company."
ummm??? tom, sweetie?? what are you planning?
