That Toga scene in 229 was creepy and itās okay to think so
So, yesterday, when the leaks were posted, they were intentionally manipulated to look extremely suggestive via 4chan; cropped and darkened in ways that made the actual content even more shocking - probably for the amusement of the people on the site. However, even without that, those specific panels are still disturbing and despite the violence being (narratively) non-sexual in nature, thereās a reason why the initial reaction was kind of correct.
Iāve grown up with shounen and seinen - and often times with certain mangaka, thereās clear depiction of idealized sexual forms or actions. To put it simply, like with other mediums, we can honestly sometimes just know that the author has certain fetishes because they keep putting them into their work. This is very much known as theĀ āTarantino has a foot fetishā effect; because the director in question clearly has a foot fetish and has devoted screentime to it. TV Tropes calls it Author Appeal and thereās a good amount of examples for both manga and other mediums of how this works, and quite a bit of them are sexual, which is the focus of this āessayā.
Horikoshi has outright admitted that some of his own sexual desires are mixed into the work; and, truthfully, this isnāt necessarilyĀ ābadā or whatever, humans who can feel sexual impulse and attraction tend to incorporate it into their creative work. However, itās clear what Horikoshiās kinks are, and, well, its absolutely okay to feel put off by their content.
One of the most sexualized characters in this show, besides Midnight or Mount Lady, is specifically Toga, who of the two women in the League is the one who is a minor. And her being a teenage girl is kind of a big deal - she wears her old middle school uniform, sheās introduced as aĀ āhigh-school cutieā, thereās repeat emphasis on her being a deviant schoolgirl. Sheās seventeen, which, almost an adult in quite a few prefectures of Japan, but thereās a particular fixation on her girlishness. Heck, we had a whole fight devoted to reminding us sheās a young girl who should be in school.
And her deviance is very much fetishized. The constant ahegao faces in reaction to sexualized violence, Horikoshi for some reason choosing to depict her changing out of her quirk into nudity when, as we found 100 chapters later, that was unnecessary. With the existence of Midnight, itās not too far off to say that Horikoshi has a kink for women dominating or emasculating men, and Togaās a part of that (thereās also that infamous drawing of Mina scolding Horikoshi).
But, thereās also the trend of her being hurt far more physically than most characters.
Iām not posting images from 229 because they are disturbing, but thereās been repeated highlights of Togaās pain being sexualized. I made a fuss over this with two shots of her throwing up black goo - spaced with over 120 chapters between them, same face each time; it doesnāt look pleasant and it honestly looks like a money shot from porn, letās not mince words. Even the way the goo wraps around her is a call out to more suggestive works.
And then we have this weekās chapter, where she isnāt being sexually assaulted but it sure looks like it. Thereās little argument otherwise - we have an unconscious bloodied teenage girl being gripped by several men who are trying to strangle her. The fact we get several panels devoted to her being held down by a far larger group of men than Twice is, shaded in with her being hoisted and gripped around the waist by them is clearly meant to invoke images of the way sexual assault is portrayed in lessĀ āfamily friendlyā manga. Yes, sheās being strangled rather than groped, but the image there for a reason.
And from a narrative standpoint - it makes sense! Twice, whether platonic or, unfortunately, romantically, loves Toga. She is kind to him when he hasnāt gotten much kindness from the world. He cares for her and seeing his worst nightmare, his clones, himself, hurting her - like that - itās meant to invoke emotion and reaction. Having a maleĀ āprotagonistā (in this case) find his resolve and quell doubts because a comrade, especially aĀ ādefenselessā femaleĀ āloveā interest is in danger is a very common trope in written and visual mediums.Ā
That doesnāt make it okay.Ā
Horikoshi could have made the attempt at strangulation shown in other ways that didnāt involve her being held down by various men in suggestive poses.Ā
To put it simply, itās there to heighten both Twiceās panic, since heās going through something similar ANDā¦author appeal. There was no need to draw in that way without wanting to suggest something darker.
Horikoshi drew Togaās strangulation like a gangrape scene because he simply wanted to.
I know thatās blunt and harsh, but thatās the reality of how he deals with female characters in his work. Itās why Momoās power conveniently needs her scantily clad, itās why Togaās shown practically getting off to beaten men, itās why so many of the costumes are far more suggestive - because, at the end of the day, any narrative justifications are there to justify what the author wants.
And, further more, itās okay to be upset about this. Thereās quite a bit of jeering about this on reddit, about theĀ āoverreactionsā to the leaks and howĀ āsillyā we are for them. But this is the take that comes from lay readers with little desire to look at BNHA as a whole. But we know BNHA has an issue with this, we know that there are countless examples of womenās objectification and sexualized violence in this manga. This is not hysteria, nor is it me rallying on about some abstraction likeĀ āpurity cultureā.
I merely just want to provide space for readers to be upset about this. Itās there, and you have every right to be upset and air those feelings out. If those scenes disturbed you, like sexualized violence against minors generally does, I want you to know you are not wrong for this, nor are youĀ āover-thinkingā this.Ā
Horikoshi draws what he wants, but weāre free to discuss and express disgust over it.
one of the stupidest things iāve read on this website and a reminder about how trash this site is.
anyways! endeavor is an interesting, complex character whoās going through a decently written redemption arc, and if you still desperately want him to be a shallow plot device designed just to boost shoutoās backstory then go seek other stories instead. fiction is literally filled with two-dimensional, irredeemably shitty dads whom you can freely hate and project your issues onto.

āiāll cover you in mushrooms!ā
hiii guuuuuuys im sure u thought im dead :DDD but (unfortunately) im not! my friend gave me his 2ds and FINALLYYYYYYYYY i can play fe im so happy,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Ā
some quirkless mina edits i did for fun!!
You know what's incredibly interesting about these dark skin edits is that they say it's for the sake of extra rep, but they're only being viewed by the western audiences, where Asian rep is at its worst. And not just that, but they always lump all asians into one group too, generally treating them as if they're basically white people. How many Japanese actors have there been in the US, and the one mainly Japanese rep art they can find in the west gets "fixed." Asian erasure is a bitch ain't it.
it be. But i assume most of those editors are just young teens so theyāll grow out of their stupidity anyway
horikoshi might be afraid to play god but iām not
is there a problem?
yeah the implication horikoshi was afraid to make miruko that dark when itās something he just didnāt want to do.

Youre a whiny punk who gets butt hurt over a fucking edit of a fictional character. I dont get it, but why dont you just block these blogs and fill your dash with things you enjoy like anime tits or w/e? Its really easy. Press the block button. Please, for your own comfort.
because those blogs are awful
Ah. You are a motherfucker
my dude you are hiding behind anonymous to insult me you think your words have weight?
i dont care if ppl are gonna @ me for this but go i guess because i dont understand why most people are so mad at horikoshi for not having miruko a ādarkerā skin while calling him out for being a ācowardā or āracistā.
oh, is the manga artist AND writer of bnha obliged to satisfy all of us? is the mangaka expected to associate with what we see these days of representation (at this point i dont even want to call out the biggest country bc itāll just bring more fire to this but oh well)
just because hori shaded mirukoās skin in the past chapters that weāve doesnt mean sheād be āblackā skinned. thereās other dark skinned tone. Hell if you do some research on dark-skinned asians youād totally get how logical this is.
as a Malay from south east asia, i am dark-skinned, and i already knew hori was going for that tone of mirukoās colour. and honestly? until now i still see ppl getting so fucking mad over petty stuff like this because for fucks sake this is horikoshiās own art and story and if you guys dont like it just imagine miruko in the shade you want her to be since you guys are so unhappy
just saying
Changing a characterās skin color or ethnicity is fine. Fanart is freedom.
Telling you āfixedā a character by changing their skin color or ethnicity is racist.
you: *sees a headcanon* what the hell is this. jesus christ tumblr is spreading this is so cringe. there is no reason for any characters to be anything but straight and pale (because dark skinned asians dont exist lol)
implying edits are correction is not a headcanon, coward.

You, a fool: HORIKOSHI HAS ROBBED MIRUKO OF HER DARK SKIN. hEāS A COWARD AND A RACIST Me, an intellectual with eyes and knows values
Iām going to sneak into horikoshiās house and steal all his left shoes because there is NO REASON for Miruko to be inked that dark if sheās that light and Iām personally upset
you donāt know how value works son
