THE SELF-INSERT PROBLEM
"Ugh, self-inserts are the worst and they are such a trend in the creative industry!"- I’m sorry to ruin your complaint to the narrative and artistic world, BUT EVERY WORK HAS ASPECTS OF THE AUTHOR. And I don’t mean they are just 'avatars' of themselves in their products—it is present in their entire product! Their experiences or criteria, whatever it may be, can be found there. It came from a person, not from a machine. They saw something and didn't like it? = They criticize it in their work, just like the author of 1984, George Orwell, did when he lived through the Spanish Civil War, saw how Spanish newspapers altered facts and lied, and put that into his book—and the protagonist's actual profession is about exactly that. Or maybe you never read that book because its criticism of totalitarianism got it censored FOR YEARS. Did the author like anime? Look at the creators of Men of Action throwing Eastern tropes into their Western works, like the Japanese Bushido on a Chinese character (Six).
Let's talk about Horikoshi 'sensei' from Boku no Hero. He is a fan of Naruto, and Deku and Bakugou present a rivalry analogous to that of Sasuke and Naruto. OH, political ideas too! Horikoshi (a Japanese man) originally thought it was a good idea to name the doctor who mutates people into Noumus MARUTA = LOG, just like Unit 731 where they tortured real people, and there are still victims today. That was not an 'accident.' Japan is an imperialist country with museums that make an ODE to massacres from trying to conquer other Asian cultures for years. Maybe Horikoshi thought 'this will be cool,' like a 15-year-old edgy kid. The creator of Digital Circus basically wrote a 'what if' scenario about if she had never accepted her trans identity. The famous political essay How to Read Donald Duck (1971), written by the Chilean-Argentine Ariel Dorfman and the Belgian Armand Mattelart, is a critique of how USA products arrive 'innocently' in Latin America to inject their imperialist politics.
ART ALWAYS HAS SOME ASPECT OF THE CREATOR—of what they lived through, what they disliked, what they are in favor of or against—and that is what art is about (without justifying any creator who used their skill for evil or to stupidly hurt someone). It is about transmitting; it is a political act, and it doesn't always have a good result or good intentions. As I said, these are works made by people with humanity and individual criteria, and some can be very perverse or very good; sometimes you are just a bad writer, and other times you make wonders. Accept that your critique that 'the self-insert is garbage' is like reading the large headline of a newspaper without reading its body as a complete archive
