I knew i could never be a cinephile (not that I had a real interest to be one) because so many of these highly celebrated 'creatively cinematic' shots that are supposed to evoke deeper feelings or convey symbolism or whatever end up just annoying me and taking me out of the movie experience. Any shot that insist upon itself in any way ruins the movie experience for me.
Celebrated cinematography relies on the audience becoming consciously aware of the filmmaking. Long symbolic takes, perfectly symmetrical compositions, elaborate tracking shots, or lingering visual metaphors can create a sense of artistic intention. Movie obsessed viewers love that because they enjoy engaging with the director as much as the characters.
That was never the case for me. If the writing and acting is good, i'd watch a whole movie where the camera is focused on the characters' faces and reactions without feeling like i'm missing anything.
Not that I can't enjoy a creatively shot scene. When a visually striking shot grows naturally out of the emotional reality of the scene, I am able to enjoy it. When it feels like it's interrupting the immersive emotional momentum to display symbolism or artistic flair, it breaks the spell for me.
I can only enjoy it intellectually, as in: when i'm in the mood to analyse the cinematography. But that's possible for me after or even before watching the movie, never during it.
Sometimes I wish that wasn't the case, because i fell this limits my ability to enjoy movies. But eh, i can live with that.
There is a certain type of male character that I despise so much.. unless they were written in very specific ways.
It's the insufferably self-centered, entitled, cruel, self-pitying, theatrically flamboyant male characters who we are supposed to like and feel sympathetic to them because they suffered oh so much.
Examples: Emet-Selch, Lestat de Lioncourt, and all their shitty clones.
Extra fucking annoying if they're constantly smug while being 'wise' or having 'good intentions', ew.
Which is funny because this is basically my villain OC, except I actually love the evil cunt and i'm even sympathetic towards him. It helps that he avoids all the super annoying traits i despise in these kinds of characters.
Turns out, you can come to love a type of character you'd normally hate simply by writing that character yourself.
i'm not watching the new season of HOTD and i don't care what happens in it, but some of my mutuals informed me about the diabolical shit the writers did to the characters and i just had to laugh.
Rhaenyra gets to be the loving mother grieving her dead sons while Alicent has turned into a psychopathic mother who would send her own sons to death with zero regret (even getting angry when Aegon escaped death!).
lol. lmao, even.
Another thing i crave to read is a love story where the romantic connection is a minor element, and character exploration is the main focus. Where the romantic dynamic exists chiefly as a means of developing the characters (as opposed to character development serving the romance).

I'm interested to read fantasy stories where racism - white supremacy specifically - is not entirely absent but is a dying ideology that lingers only as a faint remnant of the very distant past, surviving in just a few isolated or cult-like societies. I'm especially interested in seeing a villain or a group of villains who aspire to revive it through colonization, insidious social engineering, or any other means of reshaping society.
me when the character has a uniquely fucked mindset. me when the character's fundamental views of how the world works lead to them being hurt and/or hurting others and not seeing the problem with this. me when the character is a little freak who does weird shit because their beliefs, inspired entirely by their environment, are fuckeddddd
[said with so much adoration in my heart it physically hurts] why would they say that. what do they mean by that. why would they do this❤️ [also said while knowing exactly why they'd do this and, in fact, having done hours of analysis into why they'd do this]
the "my favorite character did nothing wrong" mindset is completely unappealing to me because i love thinking about all the things my favorite characters did wrong

Genuinely kind people don't get enough credit. People seem to think that being nice is just a personality trait, but it's actually a commitment to treat people well, even when it's hard. It's not just being nice to the people you like.
It's choosing to be kind to people when you're in a bad mood, or when they're being annoying.
It's choosing to be kind to people who your friends don't like.
It's choosing to be kind to people who you don't particularly like.
It's choosing to be kind to people who you envy.
I'm not saying that you can't be a kind person and stand up for yourself, or tell someone to fuck off when they're doing something genuinely harmful, but there are a million petty reasons people use to justify treating people badly.
It is a conscious choice, made over and over, often several times a day, to treat people with kindness and respect, even when they make it hard. So appreciate the consistently kind people in your life, because they work hard to be that way, and they really don't have to.
Something that comes up when I discuss kindness with people is that people who I experience as being kind believe that they're just faking it. They don't believe it counts if you're kind to someone who you're secretly annoyed by.
But that's exactly what kindness is. It's making the effort to treat people well when you don't feel like it.
If anything it should count MORE when it's not effortless.

I think the reason I still enjoy tumblr is that even though this all still pisses me off, I know that anything that makes me mad on here is 100% earnest. It's not ragebait or engagement farming, y'all are actually just that stupid sometimes
People treating a viral post as a life achievement when it brings them nothing but fleeting internet attention will never stop being pathetic to me.
personally i’m a fan of when a story is like. the love was there. unfortunately. this all could have actually gone a lot easier for everyone if the love hadn’t been there but here we are

I knew I was officially out of the BNHA fandom when a whole year had passed without me engaging with it at all, not even with new releases or when annoying people randomly commented on my old posts. A week ago, an incredibly unhinged Enji hater wrote entire paragraphs bitching about the ending and my reaction to it and i just calmly deleted their replies and blocked them. Feels good, lol.
I hate how cliquey writing groups could be. I saw a new member experss their struggle with writing their WIP and one of the mods went 'ummm can you phrase this as a question so we could have a productive conversation?'. A while later I saw that same mod in the same channel saying shit 'i thought i had writer's block but then I got 1000 useful shower thoughts for my WIP'. OK? Where's the question there? How can we have a productive conversation about the craft when you're just yapping? Ridiculous.
It happened again, lmao! When I talked about AI scams and how they can affect writers, a mod created channel for 'junk talk' and limited all AI talk there because it's 'low effort posts'. But the same fucking mod was - just a day ago - making pointless posts in the same channel giggling at bad writing reddit posts! Why am I still part of this mess?
