Here is my favorite new piece that survived what I’m calling my Forest Fire Kiln Fiasco. Took a couple of weeks to come to terms with the firing but I feel elated now. This “Decomposing Tree Hollow” fills me with so much inspiration. I want to explore new shapes using this extreme carving technique I’ve developed and see how much more torture the clay can handle. Bringing each piece to the brink so that it looks as if it is still being devoured by insects. This particular piece is extremely light weight ... very similar to the real wood I was inspired by. Sneak peek at a piece that will be featured next week at the NCC/Red Wing exhibition opening. This sculpture dish was inspired by rotting, beetle bored tree trunks. I enjoy studying how nature recycles and new life springs up from the old. Insects could still be squirming around in this “bowl” ,creating a perfect fresh environment for something new to grow. Firing in atmospheric kilns is where my work really comes to life. A similar piece (also in the show) changed in the kiln in a way that I found completely inspiring.
