I really need a scene in Season 3 where Will sees the way Billy looks at Steve. I need a scene where he hears Neil calling Billy a “faggot.” I need a scene where Will and Billy have a heart-to-heart about being in the closet.
I need this scene to happen:
“Does he always call you that?” Billy’s on watch for whatever monsters they’re fighting this time when Will asks this. “My dad’s called me that a couple of times. Sometimes the kids at school call me that, too.”
“That’s ‘cause they don’t know that…” Will’s voice goes weak until it fades entirely.
“They don’t know what, kid?”
Will sighs heavily. “They don’t know that they’re right.”
The little boy’s words felt like a punch to the gut.
“Hey,” Billy says softly. “Don’t let ‘em get to you.”
“But they are. I am a f–”
“Don’t say it! I don’t wanna hear you talking like that, okay?”
Startled and taken aback, Will nods because he knows that he’s made Billy angry. Not at him, though, but at all the other kids who made him feel like he has no one to turn to.
“Look,” Billy says with a sigh. “I know it’s tough–believe me, I know–but what’s beating yourself up about it gonna do, huh? It’s just gonna make all those assholes who made fun of you happy, isn’t it?”
“But they’re right. I like boys.”
“So does Freddie Mercury. Do you see him being so hard on himself?”
Will’s cheeks turn bright red because he doesn’t admit to just anyone that he loves Queen. “No.”
“What do you see him doing, then?”
“Don’t lie to me, kid. You remember when Live Aid was playing last week, right? I know you and your shithead brother were watching it on TV ‘cause you guys wouldn’t shut up about it. When Queen came on, was Freddie beating himself up? Was he calling himself a faggot?”
“Nah. Sang his heart out, right? Stole the damn show.”
Finally, a smile. “Yeah, he did, didn’t he?”
“Sure did. You know how many people call that guy a faggot every day? Probably millions. You think that stops him from living his best life?”
“Didn’t think so. Imagine how that makes those people calling him that feel.”
“They probably feel pretty stupid for making fun of him.”
“Exactly. So, next time anyone gives you shit for being who you are, think about Freddie.”
Will smiles and has to ask: “Is that what you do?”
Billy doesn’t know how to answer that. All he can do is look to his left, where Steve is watching him with a smile on his face.
