Major Surgery
I was given this ARC by the publisher in exchange for an Honest Review. I know that this wasnât exactly a Holby City story. And, actually, I quite liked the characters in this story much much more than a lot of the characters that Iâve seen in the clips of Holby City. But, still, I definitely pictured that hospital while I read this book. As I said, though, this novel is so much better than what happened on the show. Cassie is a former Army Major and her entrance into the story was one of my favorite parts of the novel. Sheâs a Trauma Surgeon and up for Head of Trauma. Veronica is the head of AMU and a general surgeon, although at the start of the novel she feels like sheâs more a pure administrative person every day. Then Cassie enters the scene and both their lives are changed so much as they get closer and closer. Oh, and then thereâs a doozy of a subplot. Whoâs trying to take down Cassie and why. That one kept me guessing just enough to make it enjoyable too. There was a bit more American bashing here and there than I like to see (Actually, pretty much all ERs and EDs in the United States canât just turn down a person in distress and thatâs why so many of the city ones are in such dire financial straits because they do serve you no matter if you have insurance or not). Thankfully, that sort of thing was just thrown in there by the characters here and there and wasnât a constant thing the characters were harping on. It was a fun book, and a thoroughly enjoyable read.
Iâm living at the thought of seeing @holdwine in May! Face to face! Woot! Is anyone else coming to the South Coast Hang-Out in Crawley on 4th May? Itâs free and you get to see a bunch of wlw authors.
Holdy is all âASDFGHJKKKLKK đđâ, flailing silently, and canât wait.
Well I canât think of anything (at least anything sensible) to say!
Seriously, though, itâs going to be a great little event: lots of writers and readers, free to attend and close to London (near Gatwick airport).
Itâs gonna be amazingly fun. Iâve met most of the other authors I think (ellcon) and everyone is super nice. No need for nerves! If you canât think of anything to say to me, ask me about my dog. Iâll talk for days and show you cute pictures.
I'll be there too, looking forward to meeting you all!

Thank you all for the amazing support this year. Itâs been a remarkable time to be a debut novelist!
Author Spotlight:Â Alex K. Thorne
Todayâs piece is from an author whose book we get the pleasure of reading this month in our book club. If youâre interested in reading Chasing Stars then youâre always welcome to join us, otherwise keep on reading to learn more about Alexâs writing process and involvement in the fandoms.
A little piece about fandom culture (and how my book came about)
Thereâs been an interesting shift in fandom culture over the last few years. At the risk of sounding like an old woman sitting on my porch, yelling at the âyouths,â I will say that things were different in my day. Significantly, fandom was a hush-hush word. A place youâd visit at one am on the family computer in the living room after your parents went to bed. Thatâs not to say that there was anything dirty or taboo about it, but you seemed to instinctively know that the first rule of Live Journal (and then Tumblr) was that no-one talked about Live Journal (or Tumblr) â at least, not the real world.
