Being Tired is Part of The Contract

Cutting - in my opinion, the most labor intensive part of the process. The amount of time/effort needed varies depending on the pattern and if seam allowance is included or marked separately, but no matter what this process can not be done by machine. Each and every panel and piece of fabric that goes into a garment must be cut by hand by a person.

Pinning/clipping - pinning (or clipping) is the stage at which you align the pieces you are going to be stitching together and hold them together with — you guessed it! — either pins or clips. This can not be done by machine.

Stitching - the actual sewing. This can be done by a sewing machine, but that machine still needs to be operated by a human being.

Ironing/pressing - two words that mean the same thing. The iron itself is a machine, but once again, it needs to be operated by a human being.

Finishing - depending on the technique you use, there are certain finishing techniques that can only be done by hand. But, let’s assume we’re talking about fast fashion, which is usually just finished with a simple overlock/serger. Once again: these machines need to be operated by people.

These are just the basic steps to making a garment, and don’t include textile arts that I am not as knowledgeable about, such as weaving, knitting, and crochet. Also, it is important to note that there are a lot of things that can only be done by hand, such as certain stitches and decorative techniques.

Also, the machinery being operated in textile factories is not equivalent to a domestic sewing machine. We’re talking about one of these guys:

See that gray cylinder under the table, behind the knee pedal? That’s the motor. These machines can sew through your fingers bones and all and not even stop. The people in these factories and sweatshops are operating heavy machinery, and are subject to all the risk that comes with that in addition to all of the work I mentioned above.

the image of the voodoo doll as a magic doll you stab to hurt people actually comes from a practice by english pagan witches of making poppets. the poppet would be made in the shape of someone you hate and filled with their hair and then stabbed with big needles repeatedly. and the poppets got conflated with voodoo dolls later on.

voodoo dolls were actually a way of keeping records when black people were prevented from reading or writing. a voodoo priest who would serve as a communities doctor would make a doll that looks like the patient, and stick a pin in it where the patient was experiencing symptoms, this would let the doctor keep track of who was having what issues. for example if a patient has a headache, the voodoo priest puts a pin in the dolls head. the priest gives the patient a treatment, when the patient comes back the priest knows which doll is theirs because it looks like them, and they know they're dealing with a headache because the doll has a pin in it's head. when the symptoms resolve the pin is removed, until then the doctor has a reminder that this is an ongoing issue for a specific patient.

I wrote this because when I saw it this post had a TL;DW that conflated the information about poppets and the information about voodoo dolls, creating new and original misinformation about voodoo dolls that comes from confusing them with poppets so like don't reblog that one maybe.

Now the second thing I know about voodoo is the written historical record is trash and a prime example of anthropology being racist. (Please if you are thinking where are the historical primary non-anthropological written sources, please pause and look at the anti-literacy law picture above and also think about the orgins of voodoo being tied to people being violently abducted and forced into slavery and what that might mean for written record keeping practices)

I didn't find anything, but came back and checked the comment section in case someone had a nice secondary source in there. But no, it's getting rancid with people demanding sources. Which hello, as a reminder, an active practitioner is a valid source!

We are taught to value academic sources because ideally/theoretically an academic is working with multiple primary sources (like multiple practitioners), and has insight into the context of those sources. Like is this practitioner a respected member of the community? Are they a fringe element? Are they trained by elders/experts? Are there differences and/or disagreements within the community? Ect. Which ideally can give you more certainty. However academics can be wrong, lie, and have their own preconceptions.

As mentioned historically because racism, writing on voodoo has been bad. Like that is actually academically established now. (Obviously practitioners were saying that before published records & academia caught up.) Anyway while I didn't (within my limited search) find a secondary source for specifically voodoo dolls being medical charting, I did find most of an essay tracing European/western understanding of voodoo dolls to practices in Greco/Roman Antiquity and through medieval Europe including poppets.
