So my problem with ellipsus is that it's very, very hum about how it finances itself. If you dig through the FAQ, you will eventually find this buried under "How can I support Ellipsus:"
This is not transparent. This does not tell me how it is financing itself right now. Now, when you dig a bit through google, you'll find that it's venture capital backed (which means through investments) as a start-up. It's not entirely clear who backs it, but it's listend on SpeedInvest, a venture capital fund. Further, PitchBook—which lists data on companies and startups— has this data on Ellipsus:
Now, none of this is inherently shady. But it tells you that this is a for-profit company, that together with its investors will eventually expect to, well, you know. Make Profit. And the aforementioned paid tier is, in my opinion, probably not going to cut that. Which too would be fine, but taken all this in the light of how they market incredibly aggressively to fandom, present themselves as just "writers and nerds" with "dachshunds" etc etc. is... not trustworthy, in my opinion. So—what if the paid tier does not pay off enough? What's the plan now? Why, if none of this is An Issue, do I not find any of this information transparently and easily on their own goddamn website? I'm not saying anyone should run a writing program for free. I'm saying if you pick your market in fandom, I don't think it's too much to expect very straight-up information beyond a lot of promises ("we won't sell your data/we won't use AI/we won't do anything weird just trust us broskis").
I said this various times before but: if you don't know how a service pays for itself, and you're not paying, then you're the product. And beyond a "oh we're so fandom family uwu" messaging with no substance or proof, Ellipsus has given me literal subzero indication to trust them of this not being the case.
Which isn't to say that gDocs or whatever is better. But I'd deeply, deeply recommend using LibreOffice for a free alternative, or Scrivener, which is a one-time/lifetime purchase. It's also not to say not to use Ellipsus at all; use something else as your main software, then use it if you need something for on-the-go, or for easy draft-sharing or whatever. Like, all I'm saying here really is: don't just trust it blindly. Historically, things marketing themselves this aggressively to fandom with any lack of transparency are. Well. yk. Pretty often Not That Great.
Also, minor addendum, but I do have two (2) drafts on Ellipsus for editing at work, and when amazon's servers were down I could no longer log in. You know what worked? Scrivener. Scrivener fucking worked. So you know.

well, that happened much faster than even I anticipated, I hate being right about these things. Also frankly, I do not think that this is enough to financially sustain them long-term, although I suppose that remains to be seen.
(obligatory i am once again not telling people not to use ellipsus, I'm just saying don't believe the venture capital backed startup when it pretends to be your queer fandom bestie. back up your work elsewhere and keep an eye on the stuff they're doing before you lose access to things like, yk, your version history that's older than a month.)

everyone needs to hear about the situation in india right now. the youth of this nation are going through hell and back to protect the foundations that our country was built on in the first place, while the adults who are supposed to actually be in charge try to silence our voices.
NEET, which is an exam taken by millions of students per year and is the ONLY gateway for medical admissions across the country, had its papers leaked. so many took their lives because this exam meant everything for their future. and NTA, the agency who conducts this exam, was not held accountable.
there was national backlash. cockroach janta party (initially a satirical political party formed by abhijeet dipke in retaliation to the remarks of the chief justice of india calling the youth "cockroaches" and "parasites of society") started protests at jantar mantar, demanding the resignation of the union education minister, dharmendra pradhan. the movement also asked for ten million inr (~100,000 usd) in compensation for the families of students who died by suicide and wanted NTA be held accountable.
sonam wangchuk, a climate activist and education reformer, also went on a hunger strike at jantar mantar to protest against this corruption in india's higher education system. his fast began on june 28, demanding the resignation of the union education minister. his fast lasted for 20 days until delhi police FORCIBLY removed him and admitted him to safdarjung hospital on july 18.
because of this, cockroach janta party announced "chalo sansad," a march to the parliament beginning on june 20th, 9:00 am ist. but the police seems to be responding with water cannons, mobile jammers, and baton charge. all of this, because of a peaceful protest led by people no older than 30.
and yet there has been absolutely no indian media coverage about a movement that spans the entirety of this nation. so, please, if you see this, keep talking about us. we will not let those old bastards stoop any lower than they've already had. we will not let them ruin our country any further. we will not be silenced

you've seen the jokes. india is "dirty", indians are "everywhere", why don't they fix their own country. ok. let me tell you why, and what's happening right now while nobody's watching.
first, the history you skipped: britain ruled india for two centuries and drained it. economist utsa patnaik's research estimates around $45 trillion in today's money was taken. the india that got independence in 1947 was one of the poorest countries on earth. every "why is india like this" question starts there. you don't get to profit off a robbery and then mock the crime scene.
now, what's happening RIGHT NOW:
in may the question paper for NEET leaked. that's the national medical entrance exam. over 2.2 million students took it. cancelled. years of studying, families' savings poured into coaching, gone overnight because someone sold the paper. students died by suicide after. these were kids who wanted to be doctors.
and out of that came a protest movement. a gen z group called the cockroach janta party, started by a 30 year old named abhijeet dipke, got 22 million instagram followers within DAYS. they've been doing a sit-in at jantar mantar in delhi demanding education minister dharmendra pradhan resign.
and then there's sonam wangchuk. if you've watched 3 idiots, he's the real engineer the character was based on. built solar schools in ladakh. invented ice stupas so himalayan villages have water. spent his whole life on education. he's 59 and he's been on hunger strike for 17+ days now. reporters went to see him this week and he was too weak to talk. and the troll armies are calling him "anti national" and "foreign funded". a man starving himself for other people's children. that's the thing here, anyone who asks a question is suddenly a traitor.
it's not one incident, it's everywhere you look:
• infrastructure worth thousands of crores failing within months of the ribbon cutting. tunnels collapsing in regions where heavy rain is a guarantee, not a surprise.
• youth unemployment near 10% for ages 15 to 29, 13.6% in cities. in a country of 1.42 billion where more than half the population is young.
• only about the top 3% of indians earn above 10 lakh a year. meanwhile billionaire wealth keeps ballooning and the headlines celebrate it.
• manipur burned for over two years. an ethnic conflict, tens of thousands displaced, and the prime minister barely said the word manipur while it happened.
• journalists raided. critics' houses bulldozed. activists sitting in jail for years without trial under laws like UAPA. our press freedom ranking has cratered.
• even the petrol is a fight now, ethanol blending pushed through while drivers complain about their engines and get no straight answers.
and through all of it, the PM, who came to power on religious polarisation (americans, sound familiar?), travels abroad for photo ops and has not held one single open press conference in over a decade. not one.
what i'm asking:
if you're not indian: share this. our media mostly won't cover any of it because the big outlets are owned by the same billionaires the government serves. the only reason wangchuk's fast is getting any coverage is people refusing to look away.
if you ARE indian: speak up even if you're comfortable. especially if you're comfortable. join the protests. add to this, correct me, translate it. staying quiet is a choice when nothing in this post touches your life.
india is not "dirty". india was robbed, and it's being robbed again, from the inside this time. but it's also the country where a 59 year old will starve for strangers' kids and 22 million young people will rally behind a party literally named after cockroaches, because cockroaches survive everything.

So disclaimer this is not really properly scientific, just plausible enough fantasy in my mind/thought process.
I wanted them to look similar but i also had different biomes in mind when designing each, so that kind of turned into something like "adapted for different environments even though they hatched from the same clutch". They both share many design elements like the eye motifs, general fin placement, etc. but the way they developed is what varies.
Izuna is built for speed and charm, Madara for defense and power.
Izuna hunts in the giant coral reefs in the open seas and regularly targets divers/ships. Madara hunts in the dark depths, targeting whatever untold monstrosities live down there. Both prefer a warmer environment, with Madara relying on deep hydrothermal vents to combat the colder deep waters.
As such, Izuna has brighter/tropical coloration, though combined with his blue body, when he moves he kind of "blurs", making him hard to detect and track when in motion. When he swims slowly his fins unfurl, and especially with the two translucent pectoral fins he almost looks like an underwater flame. He's got a good grasp of human tongue even though he doesn't speak it, and possesses what the humans call a "siren song". Highly curious, he sometimes gets himself into trouble, but eventually his brother is there to help out (see: kill/eat the problem).
Madara is a (mostly silent) living underwater light show, with his glow serving to lure, warn, and stun depending on how he activates it. Much of the pigmentation in his body is thermochromatic, so in the hydrothermal vents he becomes very vibrant. He also has powerful dark vision, which sometimes grants him an edge over some of the blind populace of the deep. When he swims upwards and back home his colors slowly fade out into a monochromatic grey palette, which kind of makes him stick out there. No matter, he's only there to sleep and see Izuna anyway.
Madara only ventures to the depths during waking hours, the brighter coral waters-while not suited for hunting-are much safer to retire to.
Variations in adaptation:
Fins
Izuna's fins are smaller and more ornamental, when he swims fast they just end up sticking to his tail, reducing the drag as he zooms around. Madara's on the other hand are much larger and translucent, reflecting light and making him appear a little bigger. They also help resist underwater currents like lil' parachutes.
Dorsal fins
the dorsal fins in Izuna's case drape on his tail and sway hypnotically as he swims around, and on his back become a vibrant dorsal fin that acts kind of as a sail, making him incredibly agile on tight turns. In Madara's case these fins developed into barbed stingers that stand upright on his back. He can still control them to an extent and kind of lean them flush against the tail when at ease, but they are mostly stiff and no longer fin-like. Like his stinger these barbs are venomous, injecting a paralyzing agent.
Antennae
Both have the sea-slug inspired antennae for sensing things under-water. Everything from turbulence, currents, and even supernatural energies. The two are equally sensitive, but Izuna's is shorter, since he's constantly zooming around the shorter length both increases their efficacy and prevents them from getting snagged or tangled. Madara's longer antennae float away from his head and add to the intimidation factor, they also appear as eyes "behind his head" so anything approaching from the back will think it's being watched. (while many of the deep sea dwellers are blind, some of the more dangerous ones are not.)
Tails and Stinger
Izuna's stingers and tail are separate, in his case the filaments on his sides are what developed into stingers. They make close-quarters attacks easier and can also be wielded by him directly as daggers, though he also can use them to sneak attack while charming a target (can be controlled independently). In Madara's case one of the two tail-fins developed into a powerful serrated stinger, useful for lethal piercing and hacking attacks.
Both are incredibly venomous, with the paralytic venom powerful enough to kill a grown man in under 15 minutes. Both also have a false eye on the tail, capable of mesmerizing/hypnosis. in Madara's case, the remaining tail fin developed an additional large bioluminescent eyespot that can flash-stun prey.
Izuna is very slightly bioluminescent, when he dives deep most of his body blends in with the dark water with the exception of his tail and the redish ends of his fins. This helps Madara find him by sight (it is dangerous to call out in the depths).
