βWhen we were kids, the Phonics Wizard came to our town to show off how the letter E can change the sounds of vowels. He turned a can into a cane, a pin into a pine. This one kid had a cap and he changed it into a cape, that kind of thing.
βAnd we loved it, we were all having a great time, but then he saw my sister and I, and he just got this - this look in his eyes, and then-β
She hesitated, worrying the coarse material between her fingers. βThings got pretty bad after that,β she muttered. βI know itβs silly, but I try to keep - her - comfortable. We donβt know if she can still hear us, or see us, or if sheβs even still in here, but I like to think she is. I talk to her when I can, I leave music on when Iβm out of the house. I tried to convince my parents to bring her with us when we went to Disneyland, but they didnβt - didnβt really take that well.β
After a moment, she put the ball of twine back onto its pillow. βAnyways. They tried to arrest the Phonics Wizard, but he had a plan in case something went wrong and he turned it into a plane and flew away.β

Didn't expect that
Carnivorous plants doin this is so funny to me
They don't wanna eat their pollinators :(
since its june i wanted to admit that about 3 years ago i made what is probably my biggest contribution to the internet
"Kill your local sex offender!" Oh, you mean the guy who went streaking at his local college football game on a dare one time? That's a sex crime.
"No, I mean-"
Oh, maybe the woman who had to pee in a public park that only had pay toilets, so she tried to hide behind the bushes but got caught? Public urination is a sex crime.
"What? No, I mean-"
Oh, maybe you mean the homeless guy who had to strip down to get his clothes in the laundromat to clean them for the first time in weeks? He tried being subtle, but someone called the cops on him, and now he's on the sex offender registry for public nudity.
"Rapists and pedophiles! Kill rapists and pedophiles!"
Oh, like the trans woman who got called a pedophile groomer for helping a trans kid escape her abusive parents?
Or maybe the black man who got labeled a rapist because he came on to another man's wife, and he decided to get back at him by charging him with rape?
How about the 17 year olds who were fooling around, fully consensually, in one of their bedrooms? That's still technically underage sex and thus rape of a minor.
Oh, or maybe you're talking about the doctor who performed genital reconstructive surgery in a state that just voted to get that classified as rape?
People will do everything they can to get you convinced rape and pedophilia are the worst crimes possible, then accuse whoever they like the least of being either a rapist, a pedophile, or both, counting on you turning on them just for being accused of the crime.
"Oh, so you're saying you don't want to kill a serial rapist?"
That's exactly what I'm goddamn saying.
Once we decide a group is okay to kill, the government will do everything they can to convince you that their political enemies are either part of that group, or just as bad as that group, to get you to kill their enemies for them.
The only way out is to accept every life as worth saving.
@the-overanalyzer β #human rights don't disappear when someone does something despicable #I know that's an uncomfortable position to defend sometimes but you just have to suck it up
yeah!
you're allowed to FEEL like you want to kill rapists (esp your own if such a misfortune has befallen you). you're even allowed to WANT and WISH for their deaths. that's all normal natural and dare i say... healthy???
it's perfectly sensible to feel all that rage and bloodlust as we grieve the loss of our autonomy, even if it was brief, or if we grieve the fact that this happens to others, or the prevalence of this crime, etc. whatever the reason you want that person dead, you're certainly entitled to that mental state
all of those feelings are yours, and you are allowed to feel them as long as it takes you to feel them
BUT. that doesn't make those feelings justice. that doesn't make that rage and pain the right thing to base policy on. policy that crushes human rights is policy that crushes humans, both the ones you hate and the ones you love
It reminds me of the Sir Terry Prachett quote "If you did it for a good reason, you'd do it for a bad one. You couldn't say 'We're the good guys' and do bad-guy things."
I find myself saying to myself and to my friends "the worst part is, they're still a person". It's a nauseating feeling having to stick up for disgusting people but they still deserve the base level of decency that we owe to every person. I know people who have done horrible things and I genuinely despise them, but I'd still feed them if they were hungry and call out when they were being mistreated.

pure love
the irredeemable pervert is generally well regarded among their friends for their insightful thoughts and all around pleasant demeanour
There's a recurring online tendency to aestheticize consensus itself. The imagined future village is full of emotionally compatible people who enjoy communal gardening, conflict resolution circles, acoustic folk music, mutual aid potlucks, and repairing bicycles together at sunset. Which is nice for the people who genuinely enjoy that lifestyle. But plenty of humans are solitary, prickly, obsessive, urban, nocturnal, sensory-seeking, technologically attached, contrarian, novelty-seeking, private, or just plain difficult. Those people do not evaporate after the revolution. They do not get Left Behind while you are Raptured into the Utopia. They become your neighbors.
My biggest aha moment as a leftist was when I was volunteering with an illegal supply distro group at one of the larger homeless encampments and a guy came through the breakfast line with a swastika tattoo and a machete tucked into the waistband of his pants. We asked one of the black residents of the encampment if he was a problem, and they said that he was fine and never bothered anyone. Tough to swallow pill is that sometimes you're gonna have to give services to a homeless nazi because he's just as powerless and starving as less "problematic" victims, and that "everyone deserves food/water/shelter" does still apply to people you hate.
You gotta learn how to work with and help very difficult people on a very wide spectrum, otherwise you're just trying to force reality into a neat pretty box the same way conservatives do.
in conversation about white people who go to Japan and expect their knowledge of anime to culturally carry them, I was once posed with βitβs like if there was a Japanese guy who was obsessed with spongebob and came over here and thought he could get by just communicating in spongebob quotes.β This is a false equivalence because if such a man existed we would crown him king. Weβd love him. Americans would fucking love that. sometimes I get sad that this isnβt a real guy I can invite to a party.
Ok the last one got me laughing actually
sometimes people experiencing psychosis and/or mania will come up to you on the street and talk in confusing or upsetting ways. your job is to either have a regular human-to-human conversation with that person or politely leave. your job is not to call 911. do not call 911. you might kill that person if you call 911.
I don't even have the energy to screenshot and respond to your tags- what the actual fuck is wrong with you? "the cops are scared and rightfully so" "mental health calls are the scariest for cops" OH so this isn't about the safety of psychotic & manic people this is about piggy feelings?
and no, actually, this is not USA specific and no, actually, people from other countries should not ignore this post. police violence and sanism weren't invented in the US and they are certainly not unique to here. if you (or anyone) thinks that this bullshit doesn't happen elsewhere then you are not listening.
cops r Some Guy with a Gun
do we want Some Guy with a Gun in this situation? answer is usually "NO"
This is legitimately useful reframing. A while ago I started replacing the word "cop" in my vocabulary with "a man with a gun." It really puts things into perspective.
This homeless person is making me uncomfortable. Should I call [a man with a gun]?
My neighbor is having a loud party. Should I get [a man with a gun] involved?
There are some teenagers skateboarding. Do you think [a man with a gun] would get rid of them for me?
It makes it very clear what you're saying. I can call a man with a gun to threaten or hurt someone mildly inconveniencing me. You're not calling the cops, you're calling A MAN WITH A GUN into a situation that does not warrant a firearm handled by a volatile lunatic who will not be held accountable for his actions.
