i post a lot of G3 positivity, but i don’t post as much positive stuff about G1. it’s not that i dislike G1, i grew up on it and i still adore it to this day, i just feel a strong need to defend and speak positively about G3 because it gets a lot of, in my opinion, unfair criticism. so, here are some of the things i love about G1 Monster High and dislike about G3 !! :-)
1. the packaging! i miss the old boxes a lot. i love the color (for example blue for Frankie) with the black stripes and white borders. and the old box art !! ugh
2. THE DIARIES!!! omfg!!!! i wish they would bring them back for the G3 counterparts, the diaries really helps flesh them out and gives you a feel of the characters personalities, backstories, interests, friends, and insecurities! maybe if they introduce G3-exclusive characters they’ll get diaries since the nickelodeon show is sadly cancelled
3. this one is a little specific and maybe nit-picky, but one thing i strongly dislike about G3 is the constant symbols and patterns on EVERYTHING, what bothers me specifically is that it’s only ever things that relate to the species of the character. for example, G3 Clawdeen gets wolves, moons or claw marks on most of her clothing and accessories, Frankie gets lightning bolts on everything, etc. it’s not a bad design choice necessarily but it does get to a point. i miss the were-monsters getting just animal print in general, and Frankie getting lots of plaid, Draculaura in polka dots, etc. it does seem like they’re slowly improving on this though!
4.follwing up on the last one- i miss the old color pallets. i miss red being Frankie’s accent color, neon green for Clawdeen, orange or teal for Torelai, magenta for Spectra, etc. it feels like they force pink onto every new doll because it sells better :/
5.every doll coming with a stand. oh my fucking GOD mattel, there is plenty of room in those boxes to stick a stand in there.
6.this one has nothing to do with G1 but another thing i dislike about G3 is the constant food accessories with every other doll!! i don’t mind them, they’re cute and i’m sure the kids like them! but not every doll needs a bag of chips and a water bottle and other snacks,, in my opinion, i think the core dolls should come with their backpacks and school supplies, and other dolls like creepover party or welcome committee, etc should get the food accessories, and fearbook should get the hobby items!
7. the BIGGEST thing i miss from G1 is the creativity. oh my ghoul… G1 truly was, and imo still is one of the most creative doll lines out there. i feel like mattel and most companies in general are afraid of spending/potentially losing money, so they refuse to branch out and try new things (hence all the reboots in the past like 10 years) like, think about what we got in G1; create-a-monster, astra nova (its been ages since i saw boo york that might not be her name), ghouls alive, characters with creative and intricate sculpts like Isi, Skelita, River, Jinafire, Elle, Robecca, and so so so many more. and what about the beds for Lagoona, Frankie, and Drac? they were functional room decor!!! Lagoona’s was a mood light, Frankie’s was a mirror and came with a comb for whoever owned it and has a small storage compartment, and Drac’s was a jewelry box. it was pure ART.
Generation 1 Monster High was a beautiful display of creativity and self-expression and i am so so so grateful that i was lucky enough to grow up with MH
