Theory #38
Phi is Gentarou Hongouās long-lost daughter with sparkly rainbow eyes who is telekinetic through the morphogenetic fields.
THIS WAS A JOKE I MADE MORE THAN A YEAR AGO ABOUT AN OVER-THE-TOP MARY SUE OC IāM SO ANGRY HOW ALMOST ACCURATE IT WAS FUCK
Phi deserved better
life is simply unfair
I will defend Junpei/Akane to the death but I didnāt want them getting together to be easy. Ā I wanted it to be sad. Ā I wanted them to recognize that the version of each other they have in their heads from when they were twelve was not the person who stood before them in reality. Ā I wanted friction over their different views. Ā I wanted them to acknowledge their differences, and get to know each other as they really are. Ā I wanted them to love each other for who they were, to understand each otherās point of view and become more nuanced people. Ā I wanted Akane to let go of her fear of loss of control that manifests as a fear of emotional commitment, and Junpei to get a wider view of duty to the world and a better understanding of who Akane really is and what she really needs. Ā And I want them to come to understand this together. Ā And love each other anyway.
I didnāt want them to both become dumbed-down cutesy moe versions of themselves with no significant difference in worldview or methods.
Hello Kate!Ā
Okay Iāve talked about this with @electric016 and she has a better viewpoint of this since Japanese traditions/standpoint on relationships in particular isnāt my forte. Ā But I guess it might be good to get the ball rolling? (And kindly nudge Jinger into writing a meta, lol.)Ā
Letās get some of the groundwork done under the cut for length and spoilers oops.
And thatās all fair! Ā Iām glad they got together, and all of those are good points, and the mechanics of their relationship were fine, and I really liked when the game actually addressed that - Junpeiās āShe always seemed so serious and alone⦠I want to help her lift that burden, not carry it alone, you know?ā had me cheering because yeah this is the dynamic I want to see! The little slice-of-life at the end was also cute - I want to see them happy, with a normal life (of Saving The World With a Secret Organization)!
But Iām just bitter about the ending in a lot of ways, and this post was mostly complaining that Akaneās characterization was all over the place in ZTD. She spent most of the game acting sweet and demure and without any indication she had a plan or any goal of her own. Ā There were a few spectacular times the Akane I was expecting came out - when she rigged the nuclear generator to explode, or the entire VLR end, I was also cheering, because yeah! Ā This is Akane!
For most of ZTD I just donāt feel like we saw that, though. Ā No mention of her goals, her self-sacrificial but also others-sacrificial āends justify the meansā attitude, no mention of her past, her trauma, her fear of loss of control - she was on a team with a firefighter when there were so many fires and we listened to him tell the story of how his parents died horribly in a fire and I was expecting some reaction from her at some point but it just! Ā Never happened! Ā This girl died in a fire ten years ago and it shaped her entire life since then and there was nothing! Ā Switching straight from demure sweetness to berserker rage when Junpei died, without any indication that she had anything else in her life going on besides Junpei (Aoi is still alive!! Ā The Crash Keys still need her!). Ā Akane crying and acting like it was the end of the world when people died in the decision game, as if she canāt time travel, as if she keeps forgetting that she can time travel, as if she hadnāt murdered people in the past to get a desirable result in her own Nonary game. Ā Akaneās āWhatās the point in living if you canāt be with the person you love most?ā was so un-Akane-like and obviously there to get Junpei and Akane together, without really addressing what makes them so interesting in the first place. Ā (Also, reminder, Aoi! is! still! alive!)
And thatās my complaint - I would be totally fine with this version and progression of JumpyKanny!⦠if I didnāt feel like the writers sacrificed Akaneās true, interesting, complex character to make it work, rather than doing the difficult but more fulfilling thing of having Junpei and Akane get to know and understand each other on honest grounds.

ZE fan pickup line:Ā āSo how did your favorite character get fucked over by ZTD?ā
The worst part about ZTD was that most characters kinda got fucked over, but every fan has a favorite character and the disservice done to that character especially rankles
Sigma: "So this is unconditional love. I have never known it before. Never. Not in all my 65 years. Never at all, until this moment holding these babies of ours." Me: *gesturing violently towards Kyle*
drag sigmaās fucking ass
Finished! Im glad this came out good, hes such a sweet character.
āDo you like that show?ā
āI certainly enjoy the self indulgent version of it I wrote in my head after it began to disappoint me.ā

Iāll have a good write-up later, but.
Initial feelings:
Gameplay: 9/10 - the puzzles were quite good, the mechanics were neat, the flowchart was spectacular, I even liked the fragment system quite a bit. Ā And the interface was just as sneakily clever plot-wise as ever.
Art: 6/10. Ā Some of it was lovely, some of it was... really not. Ā I understand why choices were made, but the models could get kinda janky, and emotion didnāt always come through the stiff models well. Ā Also, there was way too much absurd spurting blood.
Characters: 5/10. Ā Some characterization was great; some was not; some was really not. Ā I loved the new characters, but the returning ones were all over the place with characterization. Ā And there were a few moments at the end when even the new charactersā personalities were kinda... ignored completely, to move the plot along, or to give a nice cutesy domestic hetero happy ending.
Story: 4/10. Ā Some really interesting ideas were brought up, and there were some fantastic sequences, but the whole structure was flawed from the start and twist upon twist was just dumb.
Overall: 5.5/10. Ā Just over theĀ ācompletely averageā line for me, because the first half was genuinely enjoyable and fun. Ā But it was a poor conclusion to Zero Escape as a whole, and I feel betrayed and disappointed.
And we didnāt get to hear about what Phi, Sigma, OR Diana did??? Come ON
