HELLOOOO????
I don’t have where to post this #help
Karen and Frank: a deep dive into their relationship
The Punisher season 1 & 2 (part 2)
Read part 1, part 2 and part 3 first to understand the context better (this is becoming longer that i thought it would be). I left off in the middle of season 1 episode 9 and that's where I'm jumping right into sooo let's go!!!
Micro finds Lewis's address and Frank picks up a gun, ready to go. Micro suggests an alternative and have Curtis intervene but Frank insists he's doing this his way. There is no way he will leave someone threatening Karen on the loose, which Micro has to reluctantly accept.
Meanwhile Karen is talking to an FBI agent at the Bulletin. She receives an anoymous call which of course, it's Frank. He expresses concern over going after Lewis since now she has a target on her back and Karen asks what was she supposed to do, since he chose her.
Frank asks if the FBI is there, and to stay put until she hears from him.
Karen asks why she's hearing from him and what does he have to do with the guy. "If you do tell me, I can go to the FBI and we can deal with this."
Karen never stops offering Frank her support, in whatever he has to do, but as we said previously Frank has a bit of self-sabotaging tendencies and refuses to accept help from those who doesn't wanna put at risk.
I think what I also like about them is that he never doubts her doing cause he thinks she might not be capable or questions her morals (he even compliments her about having a gun in her bag at all times), every questioning that comes from Frank in her regards are strictly connected to how much risk it can occur for her safety. Cause thats what Frank cares about at the end of the day.
Frank tells her that it's faster his way and Karen remarks that in that way, it doesnt make him that much different from Lewis and he says "We're plenty different and you know it." It's so funny to me that she's clocking his ass because she spent the previous hourse defending him on the radio sdjkfnkjsd. She's like if someobody speaks ill on you I'll defend you but don't expect that treatment from me! Love her lol
"Do not do this and say it is for me." "Just stay put."
Oh Karen if only you knew the mental breakdown he was going through after he heard Lewis was threatening you...I wish you could have heard.
And it's so beautifully and organically confirmed 2 scenes later when Micro calls him and tells him: "You have to do whatever it takes to take care of the people you love."
And mind you! Micro up to that point only knew that Frank cared about two things: his family & Karen (whom he compared to Micro's wife too).
In that Frank has always been consistent even though his own mess of a mind doesn't always put him on the right direction. When it's said that Karen is his moral compass, I truly belive it.
It's a quality I believe he shares with Karen. They're both compassionate even if in their own different ways. For example, Karen has always believed in him and Frank shows that gratitude through acts of service. Whether or not those are approved by Karen is another story. I like to say that he's pretty much devoted to her. At the end of the day, Frank loves to help people in complicated situations just as much as she does. Sure Karen tries to get more inside their minds while Frank is more of a call to action, but it also mean they complete each other when you think about it!
When talking to Lewis on the phone (when he says "nobody gets hurt I think he meant Karen especially) Frank without realizing does the same thing Karen did to him: he provokes him. To the point that even Curtis is disappointed in him "Are you trying to get us killed?"
So again, they're not so different. They just used slightly different methods to do so.
"Not as long as hacks like Karen Page think they can write or say whatever it is they want. [...] They're not safe."
Lewis...you don't know what you just got yourself into.
Back at the Bulletin, Mr Ellison shows Karen a report on the news that shows a sight of Frank in public. "Did you know?"
In episode 10 Frank calls Billy to inform him that Lewis is targeting Ori. Billy asks what the deal between him and the kid is, Frank responds "We have unfinished business."
I like to think that also includes protecting Karen from him so that's why I'm pointing this out.
After the call ends, Karen arrives at the hotel, introducing herself to Billy (aka shit's about to go down).
While Karen's interviewing the senator, a bomb goes off. Frank and Lewis enter the room and Lewis is trying to shoot the senator but he manages to run away, leaving Karen there. Lewis picks up her and points out a gun to her head.
We then cut to Karen talking to officer Mahoney. She says Ori was lying about going to get help. She also denies that Frank and Lewis are working together. Karen tells him Frank would never bomb innocent civilians.
"It's funny how you and Castle keep...bumping up together."
Excuse her sir...that's her emotional supportive cosmic fated soulmates situationship
"In your opinion, why was he even here?"
"I think he was looking out for me."
Baby is smitten omg
She adds that if it weren't for Frank the senator would be dead. "Shooting a senator for a political opinion, does that sound like Frank Castle to you?"
This is a side note that goes beyond Kastle but i truly did like what they did with Karen in this season. Her doing her job on the side while Frank is dealing with his stuff and sometimes the two things collide...I'll never stop campaigning for her to have an important role in a future punisher solo project. I do think she fits so much better in his side of things than she does in the dd one, which sounds crazy since they're all connected and she's a character from Daredevil's world. I still enjoy watching her there it's just that she doesn't work as a romantic fold to Matt as well as she does with Frank. If her and Matt were allowed to stay just friends who help each other when in need I think I would enjoy it much more.
And we're back at the starting point: the explosion of the bomb and Lewis trying to kill the senator. It also shows Karen checking her gun in his purse. Just like a Frank in a sense, she has an immediate call to action.
Frank jumps right in front of Karen before Lewis shoots her. The senator manages to escape but Lewis holds Karen in his arms, threatening that he's wearing a bomb. At that point Frank is full on panicking but still trying to talk Lewis throught it and calm him down.
I think you can see very well the distress in his face.
The situation at this point is very tense. They're in the hallway, some cops are trying to intervene, Franks puts his gun in his pocket to show he's not trying to hurt Lewis and Karen is the one in the most difficult situation since she's trapped by the bomber.
"I will come for you."
Chills, literal chills.
Agent Madani and Karen meet briefly before she goes in to talk to Mahoney. Dinah at this point has understood that Karen has lied to her about Frank not being alive. Dinah reveals that there's a lot of people who want Frank dead and she doesn't want that to happen. Karen immediately tenses up and asks who.
"If you know who, do something about it."
"I need Frank. You two have a connection, I know that."
I wonder if Madani meant simply as in "you can easily contact him" or in the double sense of "there's something between you too". Probably the former since she technically never saw them together except maybe on TV during the trial but I like the double implication the dialogue plays here.
Madani asks Karen to tell Frank to contact her if she's able to see him, cause she knows how to help him.
"He's not who they say he is. Saved my life. Again." (Cue the attempt shooting scene in Daredevil s2, a big fave moment on mine as I've mentioned).
Also I love that she gets to remark that he's not a bad person every chance that she gets. No one has ever believed in him more than her.
Back in the hotel's kitchen, Karen is trying to reason with Lewis and convince him that nobody else needs to die for his doing. Lewis is upset at Karen, tells her that he thought she would understand him, Karen offers him help to understand. I think Lewis probably saw Frank's trial and thought that Karen was gonna reason with his motives too. What he failed to notice (but we, as the audience do) is that Karen has always being scared with him while she's never been scared with Frank, not even when she hadn't his motives clear.
Frank finally reaches Karen, assures Lewis he's unarmed, and tries to stop Lewis from blowing up (literally). He says out loud looking at Karen that the white wire is what he pulled to save Curtis back at his house. Karen understands what he's getting at. Frank once again asks Lewis to let Karen go, but he doesn't budge.
As Frank tries to distract Wilson by talking to him about his dad, Karen desperately tries to pull out the white wire from the bomb and Frank in the meantime shakes his head everytime she's touching the wrong wire. She finally succeeds in freeing herself and also manages to shoot Lewis's foot in the process, thanks to Frank reminding her the gun she has in her bag. They would work very well as a dynamic duo me thinks!
Lewis while closed behind a door, reassembles the broken wire and implies he's going to make the bomb explode. Karen exhorts Frank to get out of that kitchen but Frank refuses, pushing her to get out of there alone. Neither her nor him want to listen to the other. Frank wants Karen to be safe above everything else, and Karen is not leaving without him.
Lewis blows the bomb up and Frank and Karen manage to get away from the big explosion just in time, even though they remain injured. And we get this beautiful, tender shot:
"Are you okay?"
He holds her with such care and softness oh the buzzzzzzz. See I try to keep this a professional analysis but they make me so giddy I can't fdkjgnkdf
A bunch of cops and officer Mahoney are waiting for Frank just outside the kitchen, so they pretend Karen is being held at gunpoint by the him in front of them to get out of the situation. And this is how we get to the elevator scene™ (I was so excited to talk about it):
Also I love that before escaping Frank hands Karen his gun. Partners in crime indeed! These two need to work together again listen to me Marvel !
There's so many positive things for me to say about this scene. First of all, Karen is concerned about seeing him that wounded, probably took her back in time a little bit. I wish we got to see a patching up moment (born again you will pay for your crimes). But now let's get to the mother of all scenes.
You can literally hear his breath stopping as soon as their foreheads touch. Sometimes things like these are way more intimate and romantic than a kiss is.
I wonder if they both thought they weren't gonna see each other again in that moment and they were sort of going for a goodbye kiss type of deal. It's what it felt a bit to me (I'll get back to this concept during the s2 analysis). But were they ready to cross the line? I think Karen was. It's Frank who wasn't.
I think kissing her would have made him realize the actual weight of his feelings for her and he's not in a mental state where he can allow himself to accept that. Frank is so sure he cannot recreate the happiness he once had anymore, especially not when Karen was so close to risking her life because of him. And so, he doesn't even let himself have one kiss. At the end of the day, that's where lies the complicated nature of their relationship. He'd rather be out of her life completely than cause any harm to her. But for how long can he truly be okay with not ever seeing her again? How many times he's been wondering if she was danger and he wasn't there to save her? For how long can he pretend he wouldn't fuck the entire world up just to save her? He can't let himself be happy at the risk of losing again someone he’s in love with. Cause in the end that's what it is. It might take a while to get him properly to that, but those feelings are in motion.
"Take care."
I love you sooo, please let me gooooo (I say while everything hurts)
Its the fact that all of their final moments in a season are Frank asking her to be careful, to take care etc it hurts so bad that it's so good you guys what an angst, what a ship!
As for Karen, well I think she has it written all over her face undeniably (she still is 10 years later lol. It's easier to forget someone you've been with than someone who've had almost but never was with. And almost is truly a recurring theme in Kastle's history. We'll come back to that).
Poor baby's devasted, look at her.
We go back to present to hear the rest of Karen and Mahoney's conversation where Karen's explaining how Frank is the one who saved lives and he's not a terrorist. Mahoney says he should arrest her for helping him escape and she rebuts that if Frank's a terrorist, then that makes her a victim. The officer obviously doesn't believe her.
Mahoney then asks Karen where Frank is and she responds that she doesn't know. "Do you really think Castle's the kind of guy who walks into a building he doesn't know how to get out of?"
Episode 11 opens with Frank thinking about his wife (amogst other things) and I find that so interesting, especially since it's been actually a while since she had visions of her. He has that moment with Karen and they come back. I'm not saying the two things are necessarily connected, but I'm #noticing anyway.
"You'd rather be dead than feeling?"
At the end of episode 11 Madani and Frank finally meet up to talk. Micro can't believe he called her and Dinah adds that neither can she. I wonder if that was also something of Karen's doing that happened off screen. Guess we'll never know.
Frank officially introduces himself as himself to Leo and the kid tells him "He's a lot scarier than Pete" and he agrees. I think this makes a point to what will be his brief fling with Beth in S2.
I was also thinking that it's good that Billy never got to truly understand the nature of the bond between Karen and Frank otherwise he would have totally used her to get to him (if there's a fanfiction about that let me know).
Billy telling him that all the people around Frank are dead because of him must have stuck in his brain for a long time.
I wonder if Karen got actually to be informed about what happened they last saw each other in the elevator. Season 1 concludes with Frank being a "free" man even though we really don't know what free exactly means to him.
Season 1 ends with Frank saying that it's the first time he doesn't have to live with a war to fight and he's scared.
Now, onto season 2.
I gotta say I was pretty disappointed to learn Karen had a very small role in it. It feels to me that she needed to be more pivotal seeing how they've built their worlds colliding. I don't know if it was due to some external motives like perhaps Deborah Ann Woll's schedule was too busy and they couldn't find more than an episode to squeeze her in? I'm not sure what it was. I don't know how Kastle shippers survived back then but I admire your endurance! We are surviving just like Frank and Karen in their fucked up world!
There are however some crucial scenes to discuss.
In episode 1 Frank meets Beth, who's working in a bar. Some drunk guys tries to make pretty aggressive advances on her and Frank defends her from him by punching him. Beth asks Frank his name and he uses his fake name from s1: Pete.
It's a Frank a bit different from the one we've seen in s1. A lot less troubled I would say. Maybe not entirely at peace, but definitely in a more calmer state of mind.
Frank and Beth flirt at the bar and then she invites him for a drink at her place. While talking he discovers she has an 8 year old kid named Rex. Beth thinks it might bother him but I think it's actually what interests him more about her. She also asks Frank if she has someone waiting outside the porch for him and Frank replies that he wouldn't be there if there was (a loyal man!). Anyway that's a lie cause you know damn well Karen's waiting---
Frank and Beth end up hooking up. I think it's important to mention cause I've seen around a lot of discourse on how Frank's pained by the guilt of loving another woman after his wife but he seems to have no problem having intercourse with one. Granted, it is different. You can have sex with no feelings and Frank had been severely touch starved at that point. But Karen for Frank has never been a matter of lust. I don't think Frank would ever have sex with Karen just because. If it were with her, I believe it'd come from a place of love.
Despite him being honest with Beth about losing his wife and kids being with her is definitely easier cause it's someone who doesnt know every part of him. It's someone who doesn't know him as the Punisher.
Karen knows every part of him. She knows the man and she knows the killing machine. And even if he wasn't open with her, Karen would still read his mind like a book.
And now for the most clown moment Frank Castle has ever been in his life I present to you:
Talking about Karen with another woman in bed after sex!!! Round of applause for the smartest clown in the circus!
"I had this friend, said that we're all lonely. And all life is, is just trying not to be." Those words really stuck with you uh Frank?
He has the audacity to smile like this while talking about her who do you think you're fooling mr Castle?
Oh Karen Page...you're always on his mind...your power.
Beth immediately clocks him. "It was a woman who told you that wasn't it?" "Yeah it was."
Holy yearning, somebody save him.
Even Beth looks shortly at his expression after realizing he's gone silent lol.
Frank tells her he doesn't feel lonely in that moment. I think it's probably one of the first times he considers he can have a peaceful life with someone else. To the point he recklessly confesses to her that his name is actually Frank, not Pete and that he did some stuff he just need to be Pete for and doesn't offer any other explanation. What matters to him right now is not the past, but that said past doesn't come to her front door and he promises her they won't.
I don't think Frank was in love with her or anything of the sort (I mean how could he be, they had just met) but he was in love with the idea of starting a new life with a woman who already had a kid on her own. In his mind this was probably the best chance he can get at having some illusion of a happy family again. But how much could have that last with someone who had no 180 of the real him?
"Guess you gotta take the good when it comes right?" Well...that's what he's doing I'm afraid. Maybe in some sick twisted way, he's doing what Karen wanted for him: to not be alone.
Frank is about to leave Beth's house when he meets her son and the 3 of them go get pancakes. I think this also solidifies Frank's desire to have what he's currently lacking: which makes him go back to the bar the night after.
Frank helps Amy get rid of the people going after her and that causes a whole brawl at the bar and Beth ends up shot because of it. No matter how hard he tries troubles follow Frank around. He also loses his wedding ring in the process.
At this point he jumps right into punisher mode again.
In episode 4 Curtis tells him that not caring about anybody, running away from all kinds of feelings, worrying about nobody but himself is miserable, but it's easy. It can be applied to Karen too.
In episode 7 Curtis tells him:
"You hate standing still, that's why you always look for a fight Frank." [...] Most people are just looking for a place to be happy to stand still in. Someone to do it with."
Frank replies that he had that but that now it's gone.
"So you deny yourself another shot at it?" (and the person who offers him that is Karen big sigh. It's heartbreaking when I think about it cause she probably thought she would have managed to convince him somehow, that her love was stronger than the mess in his head. Frank doesn't believe it and makes the mistake he'll regret for the rest of his life).
Episode 7: Frank tells Curtis about Beth and how she wanted to help his kid but then she got shot and everything went downhill. To me he is quite over romanticizing what happened with Beth cause like....he knew her for two days. He just wanted a safe place to stay and hide from himself. At end of the day, the punisher is also part of Frank as much as his humanity, and he can't really escape from that either. He can instead find a purpose and use his abilities for good, which I believe is the point where we're at after OLK.
At the end of episode 10, Frank thinks he is the cause of death of three (innocent) women and this absolutely devastes him.
"I know how to break Castle. Take him away the idea that he's somehow better than you, that he's good."
And you know who made him believe in the fact that he's good? Exactly.
Finally in episode 11, Karen returns. She's at the hospital where Frank is staying, and she's trying to gain the access to see him. Of course my girl is smart and manages to gain access from the cop guarding the door.
"She's good. It's his lawyer."
Mind you, this is the first time she's seeing him since the elevator. It's gonna break me to talk about this scene. I'm so glad there's an "after" to comment on otherwise I'd be losing my mind, truly.
When Karen enters the room, she finds Frank sleeping. She sits at his side of the bed.
She's so worried for her man look at her.
Frank wakes up and hears Karen's voice asking him how he's feeling. What gets me is that he can't even bare to look at her face. She tells him that something about this feels kind of familiar (a callback of course to their fist meeting) and that she's been watching the news and assumes this has something to do with Billy Russo.
Karen keeps asking him questions but Frank doesn't reply nor looks at her. He simply says: "You should walk away."
The stunt Russo pulled took an intense toll on him mentally. How can he look at Karen in the face, the person who more than anyone else has always believed in his goodness, if he thinks he made such an impure action that did not respect the "code of honor" Karen has always been vehemently insisting on since she met him? Why should Karen even be there by his side?
"You think you can scare me off that easy? You know better than that. Besides I don't really think you want me to go." I love that he slightly reacts when she says the last part. (This reminded me so much when in Born Again Karen tells him "I don't believe you don't care.").
Truly though. She's been by his side when all of NY thought he was a cold-blooded murder. That's not gonna do anything on her.
"It's a tough situation. It's nothing we haven't dealt with before. We just have to figure out what to do about it." It's always been a we for her and it's so sweet when I think about it. There is no trouble Karen Page would not help Frank Castle with and viceversa.
Frank finally confesses what has damaged him. He says he killed three women. Karen offers his help.
"You're not gonna fix this. Okay?"
"It doesn't matter what you did. It doesn't change of I feel about you."
"It should."
"It doesn't."
The desperation in her voice pains me so much. I think she was trying to reassure him that she could never stop seeing him as a good person, no matter what he believes in his head. Obviously Karen doesn't know the contest of the killing but she knows in heart that it wasn't intentional on his part, especially cause she above all can have the privilege to say she knows Frank well.
Frank has a nightmare about Maria and the kids and wakes up abruptly. Karen is still by his side, listening to him talk about how he had finally decided that he was gonna stay home and be with his family, just right before the tragedy happened.
I like how he's still resisting the urge to look at her, but not her touch. It's another one of those moments where Kastle has the ability to convey a very intimate moment without actually kissing and once again, they're more romantic than a kiss is.
When he talks about wanting to hold onto the laughters even in his dreams, it made me think so much about his halluctionation of Karen in OLK. I mean the parallel there serves a very specific purpose already but...yeah this is to say that if Frank really loves he's gonna hallucinate you at some point I don't know!
Anyway thats not the focus here. He basically compares what happened to his family to the lives of those women he took. Karen reassures him that he couldn't have known.
"Right there I would have killed anything that got in my way. You know what it means right? That now I'm the monster." The fact that he's telling this to Karen that fought so much for him to never been addressed that way. In a way, I do think he thinks he failed her. That he let her down, so why Karen should be at her side still?
Heck Karen getting the fuck away from him would probably be one of his biggest punishments. He concludes saying he deserves to die which makes Karen tear up and squeeze his hand even more.
I love that first he looks at her and then down at their intertwined hands.
I wish I could find the gif of this moment cause they're literally stroking each other's fingers tenderly. Again, intimacy that goes way overboard without it being with a kiss.
Amy enters the room and looks like she just caught two lovers having their little private moment fdjgnkjdf
Karen and Amy introduce themselves to each other (kinda? I think they're both trying to figure out the role they play respectively in Frank's life lol)
Karen's even passive aggressive to her kdgnkdf "They need protection from every hitman in NY or so she says whoever she is."
Amy asks both Karen and Dinah for help to get Frank out of the hospital. Meanhile Russo calls Dinah threatening her and Frank's safety.
Karen especially is so tense while hearing Billy's threats.
Outside the hospital Dinah and Karen are talking about the women that Frank supposedly kill. Karen insists that if there is even a slight chance that he didn't do it they need to check that out and offers to help her get in the morgue to check the bodies.
By examining the victims, they find out that the shots that actually killed were taken only a few feet away from them, Karen is relieved to know this means Frank did not in fact kill them.
A fake cop tries to kill Frank, Amy stops him and then also Dinah and Karen come to the rescue. Karen tells Frank that she did not kill the women, everything was a set up.
"You're not a monster. You never were."
Frank asks to be freed from the cuffs so he can go take care of the fake cop. Karen tries to tell him that they need a plan before acting everything out and ends up yelling at him to listen to her. Frank asks Madani and Amy to leave them alone for a bit.
"Can I ask you something? That Matt Murdock...does he know you're here?"
Karen doesn't respond.
"Yeah that's what I thought."
"What does that have to do with this?"
"Come on Karen, he is good. Don't throw that away from me."
I truly believe he's lying about Matt being good for her fgknfkd I feel like he's more saying so cause he wants her to find happiness far away from him and never been involved with risking her life ever again, but what he fails to realize is that, at that point, Karen doesn't care. She has made her choice. She accepts Frank how he is. Frank instead, made the choice for her.
While Karen is unlocking the handcuffs he asks her to walk way (even though he looks like a kicked puppy in the process). Hello Frank it's me from the future and you're sooooo gonna regret this.
"Come on, Karen. Look, I know you. You're brave. You're strong, but you're so goddamn stubborn and you will throw everything away for me and I cannot let that happen." Well looking at her right now....she isn't much happier Frank isn't she? I wish you knew!
"So it's okay for them to risk everything but not me?"
Karen makes a good point. Frank's point is that Dinah's lost as much as he is and Amy needs him to stay alive. In his head, Karen doesn't. Karen is much better off and happier without him ruining her life and bringing her to her dark side. I also believe is that he cannot live with the idea of losing Karen. It's not something he tells her directly but we know it's at the core of his train of thought.
"What if there's a better way? What if you and I figure it out together?"
And there it is. Karen offering him a chance of a better life, with her.
"There's no cozy ending, not for me."
"You cannot keep loving people in your dreams!" Oh Karen...if only you knew now what his dreams consists of...
"There's no light at the end of the road Karen."
"There could be if you let it."
"You could choose to love someone else instead of another war." My poor girl was in trenches omfg.
"I don't want to."
Frank tells Karen that he's gonna kill all the people that go after Amy and if she really wants to be apart of all of that.
"Karen I can't tell how much it means to me that you came here. You sat with me."
I always appreciate when his soft side comes out because of Karen. Cause after all, we're not talking about a man who’s taking the decision of keeping Karen away from him wholeheartedly . This is a man who couldn't even hold her gaze when thinking he failed her a good person. This is a man who’s broken and hurt by said decision but cannot bring himself to be happy with her when there's so many other things he has to deal with. Once again his self sabotaging part really plays out. He didn't think he was good enough for her. He doesn't think she should throw away her entire life to adapt to his lifestyle. It's so tragically beautiful. Also I know man regrets everything he ever said in that hospital room so I'm good with him suffering for a bit.
"So make it mean something."
"I gotta walk out of here and you can't do it with me."
Had not Amy interrupted here they were so gonna kiss. Was it gonna be the goodbye kiss he didn't get to give her in the elevator room? Probably. In a way it means that this time, he was ready to give in. And maybe who knows, that kiss could have been a goodbye and a promise.
I love that Kastle circles a lot around the "almost" of it all. The kisses that almost happened, the suggestion of being happy that almost happened, the almost making up with a cup of coffee. I love it cause it tells that their story isn't over. It never was. Cause there's so much stuff they're not telling each other, they're both still haunting each other and so on. And that's what makes it so compelling to watch.
Amy jokes: "You guys are the cutest. I'm almost jealous. But do you mind if we continue this heart to heart once we're outta here?"
The face of a man who knows he fucked up big time.
Before leaving, Karen makes her last good deed to help Frank by activating the fire alarm, allowing him to escape.
We then find out that the favor the morgue guy asked Karen were her shoes. Mahoney asks her what happened to them.
"Gave them away for a worthy cause."
Cause Frank has always been her worthy cause, since the beginning. Nobody else saw the light in him like she did.
"Good luck, Frank." while he can't hear her gave me such "Stay safe." in Born Again vibes. ughhhh why they gotta be like this.
I think the difference in the pain of letting her go can also be seen in the way he's happy that Amy gets to have a new life for example. He would be happy for Karen too, but a lot more in pain. And he literally gives her the speech Karen was trying to give him. Moving on with her life, leaving that life in the past. He can wish happiness for others, never for himself.
"Sometimes you find things and they change your life." I wonder if that could apply to Karen too, who knows.
And that concludes Kastle's journey in the Punisher series. It's been one hell of a ride, but I cannot wait to talk about the next and final segment, which is the MCU part and I cannot wait. Stay tuned!! This took me the whole night to write I'm not even kidding lol
2 for the smut prompt with Frank & Karen
Veeeery vaguely nsfw and also on ao3.
2) crying crying during sex that leads to a pause or early end to comfort and take care of whatever emotions bubbled over
He’s getting better, he swears.
Frank isn’t particularly fond of this whole trying to become a functional person again thing – and that’s just to the extent he’s doing it, which is not the version his partner wants, which is-
The compromises are in his favor, for now. He’s still not sure they’re enough.
The physical side of the relationship is the easy part, he wants to think. Karen is a certain kind of gorgeous, and he’s never had anything resembling a clear type, and his body is… surprisingly cooperative, in that area. He hadn’t been sure it would be, hasn’t tried anything with more emotions than a one night stand since he got widowed and even that has been rare and-
Focus.
He can feel the edges of the bad things starting to spike, that fog that makes him think he’s too broken for the life he’s trying to have. Fantastic timing. Why this couldn't have hit at some other point in the past twenty minutes, he isn’t sure, it’s not like there weren’t opportunities, but of course
He can get through this. Bite his lip instead of hers and keep going and maybe climax will solve this.
It’s not even anything she did, he thinks as he tries to focus on the soft body beneath his and how damn perfect she is instead of his own potential distress. Karen has never, in his interactions with her, done anything wrong. She’s kind and patient and apparently masochistic enough to put up with his antics on a regular basis, let him take up space in her bed and try to bleed out in her bathroom and-
That’s kinda the problem, he thinks as he breaks. She’s good. He… isn’t.
He can control this, maybe. He can take a few deep breaths, pause, try to balance so less of his weight is on her because he is not moving his hips and she’s delicate and he can’t focus his way out of this but he wants, he wants-
“Did I do something?"
“I can’t-”
His voice sounds rough, to the extent it sounds like his at all. This is a nightmare. He’d wonder if it was a hallucination if it weren’t for the background noise of the demonic small dog in the apartment above them – his hallucinations, for all their delights, don't tend to feature animals. So, this is real. This is real, and he is going to ruin the most decent thing in his life because his brain decided to d stupid shit during sex and if there’s any limit to her forgiveness he’d understand it being this and-
“Can you move off me? Might be easier, whatever’s… going on, if you're not…”
He doesn't want to. If he does, he wants to say, he’s not sure his dick is going to be cooperative later. But she has a point, she always has a point, s-
It takes more effort than it should to move his body so little. Great sign here. He’s trying to keep as much composure as possible, but also vibrating, and he doesn't know what happened and that won't make it easier and-
There is an indefinite stretch of time that happens to his body and not his mind.
He knows he has a body, and that it’s supposed to be tethered more than it is. He knows that things are happening to him, that his partner is moving around him, running her fingers over safe places and not making an issue out of this situation and oh he doesn't deserve her and-
“You didn’t-” he breathes when he trusts his voice again, when the worst feels over.
“We don't need to talk.”
But she wants to, or at least she will in a day or two. He knows her better than that. Karen is sweet, yes, but her curious streak is just as strong and he might be turning her into a worrier and-
“Nothing-”
“It’s okay.”
He believes her.
Sure, it’ll be a long few days for them. The next time they try anything intimate will carry strange energy. But there’s nothing here they can’t come back from. They're stronger than that. He hopes they’re stronger than that.
“You need anything?” she asks after a peaceful silence.
“No. Just… stay.”She shifts her position and rests her head on his shoulder now that she feels safe enough to do so, and her hair is everywhere, and. Yeah. They’re gonna make it.

I just can’t resist the urge to draw kastle in chibi style. They look so incredibly endearing like this! It’s hard to imagine them looking any cuter! I also can’t help but notice that ‘Never Too Late’ fits their story all too well.
When will some people stop arguing that "Frank can't have feelings for Karen because he never got over Maria"? It's already been explained that he doesn't stay with her because of the lifestyle he chose and doesn't want to involve her. Understand this: the MCU version of Frank has two loves at different points in his life. Maria is the love of Frank's life in his role as a husband and father, Karen is the love of his life in his role as a Punisher and Vigilante. They are different loves at different times in Frank's life; neither replaces or surpasses the significance of the other in his life.

Karen and Frank: a deep dive into their relationship
Daredevil season 2 edition (part 1)
Okay so…the time has finally come. I’ve been wanting to analyse their dynamic ever since i got into the fandom but in order to do that, i had to thoroughly watch anything these two are involved in together and be able to build my own vision and thoughts around them.
i didnt take any kind of notes as i’m approaching to do this (i probably should have), i’m more of making things up as i go. of one thing i’m sure of and it is that I wanna divide these metas into sections, so i will go season by season where karen and frank appear together and/or are mentioned. i also wanna preface by saying i don’t know how long these metas are gonna take because i procrastinate a lot lol. I plan on finishing them hopefully before brand new day comes out as i think that might add some potentially new analysis material
with further ado let’s being with the birth of kastle. where it all began: daredevil season 2 (also buckle up cause it's gonna be long)
let's start from the beginning, shall we?
Episode 1 of Daredevil season 2 aka the better show of daredevil that there is
to be fair, there isnt much "kastle" to discuss. it's frank's introduction, so naturally we're supposed to see him through the lenses of big bad crazy guy who just shot up a hospital so i'll just say what i found amusing about this scene.
first of all its the fact that at some point we see frank through karen's perspective and i like how he's in the dim light, it's obviously not to reveal his face completely yet, but i also like to think its that way to show that his figure is still a mystery for karen as well. what i also like about the scene is the fact that karen reacts immediately to the danger and escapes successfully (later of course we will find out that it was never frank's intention to kill her)
Now onto Episode 2.
This is where the magic start to happen. First thing that got me is when while Karen is trying to collect data to put Grotto in witness protection program he tells her
which she then promptly replies with "i'm terrified" but the truth is, she doesnt look the part. now, shock can come in many different ways, but i do believe her interest in what happened and why it happened, sorta took over the fear. indeed when moments later, agent mahoney hints at having a lead about who the mysterious killing machine man is, karen is immediately in game.
I do find also interesting the way agent Mahoney describes him:
The comparison why DD's ways of turning things around is immediately poignant. This guy might be a vigilante, but his methods? Completely different from the hero of the city. It draws an immediate rift between the two and how common people see them even though then Mahoney adds how the view on how he operates is split, even between the cops.
From a later scene, we learn that Frank's targets are not random. They're very thought out and precise. He actively seeks the people that he want to kill and doesnt stop until they're dead.
Karen learns there that the identity of the killer is still an open investigation and that they're using a code name for his case, which of course, is none other than the Punisher.
And that's when Karen's investigation actually starts. She tells Foggy that she could have been one of the people who died and despite Foggy reassuring her, she sorta of things some kind of sick karma is getting in her way, like a punishment indeed (and we know exactly why she feels that way. she has dipped directly in being blamed for somebody's death, her brother at that. and she killed Wesley the immediate chance she took. I think it's important to note that just like Frank doesnt hesitate killing criminals, she didnt hesitate killing Wesley).
Karen then goes to Matt's house for comfort and tells him how she doesnt really like being used for target pratice which is some foreshadowing in a way, to her being used as a bait much later on.
The two proceed to talk about the punisher situation and how they need to move in order to protect Grotto from him. Matt asks Karen "do you think he's crazy?" to which she replies no, but she also thinks that enabling Daredevil's actions is what brought on the surface other men like him. Of course Matt's irked by the comparison. He's not like the guy, he wouldnt kill a soul even if he tried. But of course, Karen doesnt know that, cause at this point in the story, she doesnt even know DD and Matt are the same person (there's also an interesting underground message about gun control i feel like but it's not the topic of this text).
Then Karen says:
And Matt of course going along his own morals asks Karen if she thinks that the Punisher could be a good person. She has no (a bit reluctantly imo) and remarks that it could be anyone to which Matt isnt visibly pleased, at all. It's a slow but steady beginning to a rift between the two that's gonna be much bigger later.
Reyes without Karen and Foggy knowing, tries to use Grotto as bait for Frank to show up but he's got them all figured out, gets stopped by Daredevil from killing Grotto.
Episode 3
Little overview of the episode: Grotto is upset the police used him as a bait (without anyone kwowing) and doesnt want to collaborate with Karen and Foggy anymore so Karen is still trying to figure out a way to get out this messy situation. Meanwhile, Frank keeps Daredevil tied up on a roof as we learn a little bit more about his motives and why he operates the way he does. We learn that of course, his views are in starch contrast to Matt's.
Karen doesn't want Nelson & Murdock to lose the case and asks Reyes's right hand for the Punisher files, without specifying what she needs them for. She's however, very determined to get those files and she succeeds. Frank manages to kill Grotto despite DD's pleads to stop.
It's night and we're back in Karen's office. She's examining the files, which contain a bunch of very gruesome deaths. The last thing she gets out of the envelope, is an x-ray of his skull (which is an iconic scene if you ask me) and she notices there's a small hole on the left side of his skull.
Episode 4
The scene where Matt says "You never said you had a brother" "You never asked" sort of struck to me at the time of first watching it, cause it felt to me like it was natural for her to open up to Frank about anedoctes from her childhood for example (which we will see later on).
During Grotto's funeral, Karen says she never liked the idea of him dying alone, which made me think about the scene where she talks about loneliness with Frank in TP s1. Karen is a compassionate human and that compassion shines through even when the person they're talking about isnt a good person at all.
And then we're back talking about the x-ray. Here Karen has an intuition. Frank was obviously shot by someone and maybe he's not the worst that's out there. Maybe Reyes is covering something worse. Since the beginning Karen has pretty much never believed for Frank to be the worst thing that has happened to NY and encourages Matt and Foggy to find him instead.
"Punisher's a lunatic" "But you care anyway?" and much of her response to me felt like reporter!karen was speaking. She's curious, she is certain there's more to him to uncover and adds on to say that humans are complicated species (which could be a self reflect).
And she's absolutely right! Then Matt calls her compassionate (something we agree on), compares her to a saint and Karen remarks once again "I'm no saint" which might still allude at what happened with her brother and Wesley. That guilt never stops following her around, just like the thought of having responsability in his family's death never stops haunting Frank.
Karen goes on her little side quest and finds George Buck to know more about the x-ray. She learns that no one came to visit him at the hospital only the "suits" as the man calls them. And this is how Karen discovers his home address (brilliant work gotta say).
She enters in Frank's home and starts digging around for proofs. We see her in Lisa's room and that's the moment she realizes that this guy, this huge menace NY is facing had a family and was a father, as well as learning he was a marine.
I think it's also interesting to point out that Frank's not emotionless. Aside from suffering PTSD from his family being killed, he had a dog he was affectionate to and it's what causes him to give up and confess to Finn where's the money so the dog wont get hurt. It's a small thing but it's worth noting that he's not at all detatched from caring about something.
After help him escape from Finn, there's another important conversation between Frank and DD where Frank says how he was never scared while he was fighting in the marine, it was the return home that was, the fear of dying on the plane and the first time she reunited with his family after coming back. You can see it simply from his eyes how much love he had for them, especially in the way he talks about his daughter. We're in front of a deeply traumatized man, whose losses shaped what he is today, just like Karen's losses. Their biggest difference I think is, that Frank doesn't feel any guilt for what he does: he believes whoever he killed deserved it while Karen is still actively trying to find out if there's some kind of punishment reserved for her for what she did.
Frank does, however, feel guilt for not reading Lisa her favorite book cause he was tired, which ended up being the last night he could have ever had the chance to do that.
Karen learns through the news at Josie's that Frank was found by the police (but we know it was actually DD) and gets upset that Frank's being described as a "cold-blooded psychopath" because she knows Reyes is gonna use that to her advantage, to the point that even Matt jokes about her disappointment. She also says that's in moment like those that she remembers how precious life can be. And i think thats something else she has in common with with Frank. Despite everything they've been through they both want to live. Sure, Frank might struggle here and there to find a reason to, but ultimately he has a job to finish that he most definitely does not want to die for. The more accurate question would be if he's found something to live for. but we'll get to that someday.
Episode 5
Almost exactly where we left off, Karen's still upset the press is painting Frank as a "deranged lunatic". She now knows there's more to the story, its not an intuition anymore, she has actual proof and so does Matt, even if he can't tell.
While talking to Matt and Foggy, Karen ends up slipping up about Frank having a family so she's forced to confess she broke into his house, which isnt obviously met with enthusiasm from the two lawyers.
Foggy especially isnt too keen on digging the situation deeper than it already is, but you can tell from her face, Karen's not gonna stop there.
She indeed goes to the Bulletin to talk to Mr Ellison about the inaccuracies about Frank's articles. Karen points out he's a war hero and that he had a family, that died arount the same time in was in the hospital after being shot in the head. She manages to convince Mr Ellison to roam through the Bulletin's archive to find more material in exchange of the Bulletin having the exclusive of what she finds.
And she does.
Episode 6
We begin with Karen correcting public defender Roth about the inaccurate things about the time Frank shot up the hospital. Karen also learns through him that Frank is awake at the hospital and that there's a possibility he could get the death penalty which none of the trio is thrilled about.
And it's actually Matt who suggests to deal with Frank's case to get him a plea deal, which for Karen only means one thing: saving Frank's life. Even since the beginning and without knowing him deep down, that's always been one of her priorities. She even dismisses Foggy's remarks about Frank trying to shoot her.
After convincing Foggy, the 3 go to the hospital. I found funny that Matt and Karen walk in there holding hands and let go as soon as they enter the room, almost symbolizing a rift between them is about to form.
After Matt introduces himself and essentially explains they're there to help him we finally get their first eye contact!
She's so eager to talk to him she crosses the red tape and shows him the picture of his family she found in his house. And finally we get to their first real interaction. You can tell Frank is absolutely surprised by Karen's approach and Matt actually has to hold her back while Frank keeps asking over and over why she was in his house.
Those lingering stares really hit
And that interaction is important cause it's what pushes Frank to actually accept Matt and Foggy as his defendants. Karen Page is the spark that makes it happen.
Another very funny thing
While Matt goes with Elektra, Karen and Foggy stay at the hospital to look for his charges and things that could help them with the case, which means we're finally at one their most iconic scenes. I swear it hit like crack the first time i saw it.
Foggy is talking to Frank but he's not even listening. His eyes are completely fixated on Karen from the moment she entered the room.
"I'm guilty, I'm not talking to you. I'm talking to her. " chills you guys, history was made.
Frank then asks to talk to her alone, which Foggy doesnt approve of, but Karen doesnt seem to mind. At all.
Frank goes straight to the point. He wants to know what Karen knows about his family. Karen reads him the police report that was made the day his family was killed and Frank says it's all bullshit, but unfortunately it's what Reyes is working with.
Then Karen asks Frank what she remembers about that day, so that she can help him figure things out. It's through this dialogue that Frank reveals to Karen his own guilt about not being able to help his family; "My job was to keep them safe and I didnt."
Karen feels a bit uneasy and offers to come back [when he feels better i suppose] to which Frank pleads her to stay. And she does.
Frank tells Karen that she was never in danger that night at the hospital when he was targeting Grotto. He never intended to kill her and he wanted her to know what (he also takes pride in the fact that he's a skilled shooter i guess?). He only kills people who deserve it. Plus, Karen didnt actually know about the awful things Grotto had done.
Impatient, Karen asks why Frank asked her to stay and he replies that he's afraid his memories will go away. The conversation then shifts to the time Karen broke into his house. He asks her some precise questions, like the position of the plates and if the piano is still there, reminiscing about how Frank jr would hide cookies in the bench which allows Karen herself to tap into a childhood memory of hers as well, which helps him smile a little bit. "I guess we need to get away sometimes". They certainly both tend to run away from their problems in a way or another.
Then they talk about the kids' bedrooms and all the toys that belonged to his kids, Karen is almost on the verge of tears. Once again, her compassion shows. And I think what's also so beautiful about this scene is how heartwarmed Karen gets hearing him express his human side. He's not talking as a killing machine right now. He's talking as a dad and as a human being and Karen sees that. She always did.
She then hands him the family picture she snuck from his house and Frank thanks her for helping him remember (joyful memories might i add, Karen is a positive stance in the mess that his head is in that moment) which also prompts him to let her ask him any question she wants.
Foggy comes back and tells them the death penalty is off the table, however he would have to face 1 life sentence and parole in 25 years, without the possibilty of protective custody in jail, which would leave him in grave danger among all the other criminals (not that Frank seems to care).
Foggy tells Frank all he has to do when Reyes comes in is plead guilty and he will never have to deal with them again. Karen and Frank glance a look at each other and he confirms he will.
He doesn't.
Foggy is flabbergasted but Karen? Not so much. "Maybe he just wants the truth." Defending him till the end!
So now a trial is going to happen.
Episode 7
Foggy suggest to go for the insanity route which Karen is immediately against. She's not very convinced Frank's insane, probably not at all and she's also backed by Matt in that.
"If Castle's goes into general public, he's as good as dead."
They talk about convincing him to bring PTSD to the table and it's funny to me that Karen already know she has a shot at doing so cause he wants to talk to her alone, already had him wrapped around her finger.
Matt doesnt like the fact that Karen has to do all of this alone but she's resolute. Plus Frank doesn't scare her. She's the one who saw the good in him from the start.
And...we get to another of my favorite scenes in this season.
Karen goes to prison to talk to Frank. She explains how they're thinking to bring up a character witness to his trial and narrate everything he's been through, to show the court what kind of person he is. He's not happy about the PTSD suggestion. He considers it an insult for those who actually suffer from it, and remarks how it wasnt the battlefield that made his life go to shit. It was the after.
Karen is fed up with his bullshit (probably the only person on the planet who can deal with it) and warns him that if he doesn't cooperate with them his family will never see justice and he will rot in jail.
#gagged him so bad
he's so pleased seeing her attitude i swear to god
He doesnt budge on the PTSD but says the name of his ex colonel as the witness.
the boy is flirtinggggg
"I went over those one hundred times" "Sure, but you haven't done it with me."
I dont need to add commentary these speaks for themselves. I do wanna add that this is the scene where to me Karen gave him something new to look forward to. A purpose.
Karen goes then back to Foggy to summarize what Frank said and tells him to try to immedesimate himself in Frank to truly understand how he feels about the loss of his family.
"Your family isnt coming back and you watch them die in front of you." She's the one who always understood his pain better than anyone else.
Foggy gives Karen hope they can get a mistrial.
And finally we get to the trial.
Their mission is to prove that the autopsy report of Frank's family are faked. After the first part of the trial, Karen goes to Matt's apartment. The two share a conversation about the case. Matt asks if she's ever thought about going to law school. Karen doesnt seem to enthusiastic about it, says that often times the truth gets lost.
While they talking, Karen mentions that ever since dealing with Frank's case, she's being asking herself if there's a difference between saving lives and preventing lives from needed to be saved. Matt doesn't agree with her, stating that while deserving of a fair trial, Frank killed people. Karen rebutts saying that he killed bad people. She doesnt think he has the right to kill, but she understand the need to seek vengeance after what happened to his family.
"Vengeance is not justice, what he's doing is completely wrong." "Right or wrong you can't deny that it works."
Karen's moral compass kinda goes crazy here. On one hand, she doesnt condone the killing, on the other she does see it as effective. It does nothing but show the different povs of Karen and Matt, and how he's not pleased with her views.
The trial continues. The doctor admits the autopsy report were altered.
Episode 8
It's time for the character witness to speak for Frank. The colonel speaks highly of him and describes him as a "man who would gladly give his life to keep others safe." (Indeed Frank saved the colonel himself from certain death).
They then talk about the condition Frank is suffering due to the injury on his skull, which Frank is skeptical about but Karen urges him to keep listening.
After it concludes, a kid from the public jury yells out that Frank killed his father. Later Karen and Frank are talking in jail. He admits he did kill the kid's dad to which Karen replies that she can't judge him. And then again we know why she doesnt. Karen has a dark side in her, just like him.
I'm concluding the first part here. Why you may ask? Cause it doesn't let me upload any more pictures and I think actual images are more compelling than just narrating through it. If you managed to actually get to this point, I applaud you for being brave! I apologize in advance for any grammatical error or mispells, I don't have the time to proof read unfortunately but i hope it's at least entertaining and doesn't feel like a waste of time. See you very very soon with part 2! 🖤🩵

Karen and Frank: a deep dive into their relationship
Daredevil season 2 edition (part 2)
Before getting right into it I suggest reading part 1 first in order to get where I'm coming from with this analysis. I left off in the middle of episode 8 when Frank is currently undergoing his trial. So let's jump right into it!
We begin noticing that Frank has a little bit of care for Karen. "That was tough in there for you, right? It was hard?"
Karen admits that it was and then asks him that he needs to do something for her, and take a stand at the trial. Which Frank isn't too happy about. Karen urges him to think that they can at least reduce the charges, even if they can't win the case.
"That might not be important to you, but it is important to me."
I think this is such a crucial scene. Karen is sure he's not a monster while Frank self doubts himself.
"What if i find these man that did that to my family, what if nothing changes? What if this is just me now?"
"Then don't you deserve to know that too?"
Since the beginning, Karen has always made him question anything about himself, not to tear him down, quite the contrary actually. She questions what he does cause she believes in him and ultimately wants him to find some peace with himself, the same peace she might be looking in herself too.
After convincing (or seemingly so) Frank to take the stand, Karen tells Foggy the news and he insists Matt should do the questioning instead of him. Karen is not pleased with the suggestion since Matt hasn't spent much time with Frank and doesnt know him well (like she does). Eventually they go for it.
She's so worried for her murderous pookie
I'm not going too much into what's said during the questioning cause it's not very kastle-centric but I do like how deeply concerned Karen in during all of it.
What's relevant is that Frank blows all of his chances away by saying out loud that he's not crazy and that he'd kill the people he killed all over again if he had the chance to.
"I know who I am and I do not need your help."
Karen is in absolute shock but is firm in saying the Frank that was on trial was definitely not the Frank she talked to. The Frank who also worried about how she was feeling inside.
Episode 9
Karen finds some new information and pictures about John Doe. We can see she has the desire to continue investigating the case, even though Foggy tells her to let it go. To him, it's over. They did everything they could.
They end up talking about Matt and what's going on with him and Karen says "I cannot be lied to anymore. All I want is the truth about something." which is relevant for later.
Back at the Bulletin, Karen reports to Mr Ellison the latest news about John Doe and asks him to keep going with the researches instead of her. Mr Ellison asks "Do you want to move on?" to which she doesn't give a yes or no answer, just reiterates that the trial's over and Frank tanked his own (interesting that he calls him by last name here).
In the end it's the man that convinces her to keep going (and I dont think she really wanted to quit for good anyway). The trial might be over, but the case isn't.
The idea is to find Doctor Tepper's address and talk to him in private about the autopsies which they end up doing.
They end up discovering that John Doe was actually an undercover cop.
From this point on, Karen works for the Bulletin. I wanna bring up the fact that she reads the article about his brother's death cause Mr Ellison tells her that neither him nor being cared. We can see her a more emotional representation of the guilt she's been bottling up for years.
It's an interesting contrast between her and Frank. He feels guilty for something he didn't do but could have avoided and she feels guilty for something she didn't do, but feels responsabilty for. They're sort of the sides of the same coin.
At the of this episode, Frank escapes from prison.
Episode 10
Police along Karen and the others have found out that Frank has escaped, which means the security is higher than ever.
Reyes asks to see Karen, Matt and Foggy as they discover that Fisk might have had an hand in Frank's escape since they were located in the same cell block.
The DA admits that she made a mistake the day Frank's family was murdered, to which Karen swiftly adds that it was a massacre, not a mistake. She's still protective of Frank's tragedy, despite all. She also tells she knows it was a sting, not a mistake.
Karen & co learn about the Blacksmith and how he operated. Reyes greenlit the operation to catch him nwas a failure and Frank's family got in the middle of it. Then Reyes tells them that she's scared for her daughter safety, afraid that Frank could kill her to get his revenge. Karen reassured Reyes that Frank would never target her family, he has his own internal code and she knows it well.
Now i think I need to draw a comparison because it's essential to a later scene that actually ended up being one of my favorites of the entire season.
Matt hears the sound of a cocking gun tells everyone to get down and shields Karen with his body (Foggy ends up being shot and Reyes dies on sight).
I think you might already understand what I need the parallel for. We'll come back to that later.
Everyone is now successfully convinced that Frank's responsible for the shooting and even Karen and Foggy are advised to leave NY.
Karen goes back to the Bulletin, determined to find out the truth. She wants to know if Frank's actually did the shooting. She doesn't wanna trust her gut, she wants facts. She knows that if he's the one who did it he's not gonna stop and i'll round up until everyone who crossed his path dies. Which brings her to Tepper once again.
When Karen and Mr Ellison get to Tepper's house, they already find him dead. He's said to have multiple bullets in his body and lots of blood spilled. Karen immediately points out that's not Frank's style of killing.
Mr Ellison advises her to get her personal feelings aside and that whatever good she saw in Frank was never there. She asks if he thinks she projected that onto him and he comments "Why you'd wanna see good in the man who pulls the trigger is beyone me"
It's not beyond her though. Cause she was in his position once. She had to pull the trigger as well. For self defence, yes, but she has been in those shoes nonetheless. And if he can see the good in him, maybe she can see the good in her, too.
Mr Ellison then asks her to get the list of every person who could be a target for Frank and Karen tells him that she has all the files at her apartment and that she's going to get them. Ellison warns her not to go alone and asks two cops to accompany her.
"Frank's not gonna hurt me." It truly gets me everytime how much she trusted him.
We finally get to one of my favorite scenes.
Karen takes her gun out of her drawer and slowly gets close to the door pointing the gun at it. And there he stands, Frank Castle.
"It wasn't me" is what he tells her. He needs her to know he was not responsible of any of the recent killings. But Karen isn't so keen on listening to him until he puts his hands on his head, which he complies. He never judges Karen for what she does, he knows that her reaction is completely justified.
It's probably the first time ever that Karen's the one in control. Frank is never showing himself weak or compliant when it comes to his enemies. He's a skilled killer and soldier. But to Karen, he does. He's listening to what she's saying, he's not objecting. He'll do what it takes to get her to listen.
Then the shooting happens and I cant explain how buzzy this scene is to me, the fact that it directly paralles the one of matt doing the same in the same episodes which is another love interest, and also the fact that he's protecting her with his whole body....i don't know it's just too good. And obviously it also helps Karen realize that Frank's telling the truth.
Episode 11
Karen is releasing a statement to officer Mahoney about the shooting at her apartment. She tells him that she didn't see who it could have been cause she hid until the shooting was over. Of course Mahoney still believes Frank is responsible for everything, which is something Karen can't deny to him yet.
She also accepts to be protected by the police. Outside the police station she meets up with Matt and reveals to him that Frank didn't do anything and that in reality, he was the one who saved her from the shooting and whoever killed the other people knew that Frank would have been appointed responsible for it.
Matt's upset she lied to the cops about it and Karen remarks that is her problem, not his. In a sense, Frank has always been her problem too. She was the one who followed the case from the start, who wanted to find the truth about him more than anything else.
She believes he can find the real killer faster than the cops. Frank' suspects it could be the Blacksmith and Matt wonders why he would target her too which leads to her admitting that she's been working with the Bulletin since the trial started.
Matt says that all of this is dangerous, but so is working at Nelson and Murdock's and she's right. Karen is in danger with Frank as much as she is with Matt (especially after DDBA s2, but that's for another time).
After the exchange Karen leaves, concluding that she's not his to protect (another banger from Karen Page gotta say).
I think the rift between them as never being bigger than it is at this very moment.
After the cops leave her alone and Karen pretends to go to sleep, she slips outside to meet up with Frank in her car (that he stole, which she's upset about. She was done with his shit at that point too).
A song is on and Frank jokes that they should sing along to the song, Karen isn't the mood for jokes, they shouldnt anyway.
Karen confesses she's having second thoughts about the whole ordeal. She's not a lawyer and lying to the cops makes her an accessory. Frank tells her to walk away and Karen says that she doesnt wanna give Blacksmith a chance to get her a second time. Frank reassures her: he's never gonna get it. And he means it but we're not to the point of Karen becoming his priority to protect, yet.
Karen and Frank stop at a diner but she is a bit skeptical about it. They start talking about the Blacksmith and what Reyes could have possibly had on him.
They get coffee together (oh Frank you're gonna cherish this moment in the future trust me) and Karen says how he didn't seem surprised that she owned a gun. Frank replies saying that the only that surprised him is the fact that she didn't pull the plug, then tells her how a 380 gun has some thought put into it.
"Maybe this isn't your first rodeo." "Maybe it isn't."
I love that he's always impressed with her.
Frank asks her why she didn't take the shot and she replies that she believes him. She doesn't like what he does, she thinks he belongs in jail, but she appreciates he's honest and that he never lies to her. Which takes me back to Karen telling Foggy that all she would like for once is the truth about something. I think it's clear that one of the quality Karen appreciates about Frank is his honesty.
Then Frank (out of nowhere?) asks her if Matt lies to her (cause...why do you care Frank?) and if she loves him. Again Frank...why do you care? What has this to do with your case?
Karen tells him that Matt's the kind of man who hurts people but not in the same way he does. He damages them. Frank doesn't agree with her statement. He believes that people who can truly hurt are the ones who get close enough to do it. He will never be able to feel "hurt" from his wife again while Karen has Matt still in her life.
"You have everything. So hold onto it, use two hands and never let go."
....And then he tells her to go find a safe place and hide cause the diner's about to get really bloody. Karen realizes Frank used her as bait. So essentially, he also lied to her. Or masked the truth at the very least.
The diner turns into a bloodbath real soon. After it's over, Frank tells Karen to get protective custody and to get away from the place. And from him. It's Karen's first hand experience at Frank's brutalness, but since the very start Frank knows one thing: he doesn't want her near those sort of things. He doesn't want her to deal with his world. He doesn't think he methods should have a place in her world. Whether at this point in the story is to protect her or just cause he wants to operate alone, i'll leave it up to you.
Next, Frank is on the dock. He's covering a ship with fuel and that will be much more important later. He's trying to ambush the Blacksmith but finds out sooner that the man he has caught is not the real one.
Daredevil intervenes to stop him, then Blacksmith's men come armed on the port. They open fire at him and the ship blows up fast.
Karen arrives there with the police, while Daredevil is hiding behind a tank.
Seeing all the dead bodies in front of her, a teary up Karen whispers "Frank, why?"
And Matt hears her fluttering heartbeat (not the last time he'll get to hear how much her heart races when it comes to Frank eheh).
Episode 12
At this point in the story, Frank is presumed to be dead.
While police are retrieving the dead bodies on the dock, one catches Karen's attention (as usual, it will matter later).
Karen lies to Mahoney about being kidnapped by Frank. He comments he's lucky she escaped. He also assures her Frank's dead.
Instead of going home like the officer advised her,Karen goes to back to the Bulletin.
Karen tells Mr Ellison there's no story to write about anymore because everyone, including Frank, is dead.
Mr Ellison then ask the question I'm sure also the audience was asking themselves at that point.
She angrily replies that he's not a psycho murderer. To her, he kinda never was. And it's especially fascinating how she says it so firmly even after she actually witnessed the aftermath of one of his severe killing sprees. She uses present tense when talking about him, and immediately corrects to the past. It hasn't quite registered in her mind that he's dead. Probably never will.
"No one ever mentioned the fact that he was a father and a husband grieving, looking for answers and you more than anyone should understand why that matters to me."
It's yet another confirmation on the connection Karen feels to him. She can understand what Frank went through cause she herself went through it. It would have been nice if they got to talk about each other's grieving a little more.
Mr Ellison ultimately makes her realize that the story isn't over and that she can write a profile on him. But in order to do that, she needs more sources and she needs to talk to people who knew him outside the trial.
So she goes to the Colonel house to talk to him once again. Her goal is to write an article that represent Frank outside the Punisher persona and to her, the colonel is the only person that she know of that said something nice about him.
The colonel reminisces some times with Frank and a side of Frank Karen never got to see, which she finds quite amusing.
"Unnerving how he could look into a person's soul." "I think I know what you mean."
During that small talk at the diner, Frank knew had to read Karen. He just had an understanding, even if he knew barely of her life outside the court.
Karen tells the colonel Frank was involved in the blowing up of the ship. As she starts to get emotional aagin about Frank's death, she turns her back to the colonel, and her eyes are drawn to a picture of him, Frank and an injured guy in a hospital bed. Karen recognizes him as the dead body she saw that morning at the dock. The colonel starts talking about him and Karen decides it's time for her to get the fuck out of that house. He's aware Frank killed him.
The colonel points a gun at Karen (first big mistake) and offers to walk her out. They get inside her car and the colonel urges her to start driving. As she turn on the car, music starts playing from the recorder. And not a random song.
"The real Castle, like you care about him."
Second mistake: doubting how much Karen Page cares about Frank Castle!
The colonel asks Karen to pull over and she ends up crushing into another car, which leaves him severely injured (and her too).
The colonel isn't inside the car anymore, and she follow his blood traces in the woods to find him.
She immediately realizes it's Frank's doing.
Karen reaches Frank the moment he pulls out the gun to kill the colonel. She asks him to stop, that he doesn't have to kill him. If he does, he'll never get the answers he's looking for.
She begs him to tell her what happened in Kandahar, to tell her the truth, for Maria, for Lisa, for Frank jr. She will help him figure things out, she's not gonna leave him alone. "You do this and you become the monster they say you are."
As Frank drags the colonel in a cabin, Karen yells at him that if he kills him, he's dead to her. Franks looks at her probably in the coldest way he has so far and tells her "I'm already dead." Well, both technically and metaphorically he is. He's dead to New York, but a part of him also died with his family.
While getting away from the cabin, Karen hears the shot that kills the colonel. She doesn't feel her legs anymore as she start crying. Frank didn't listen to her, he blew his chance at finding out what happened with his family and at getting her help in all of it. Frank self sabotaged himself, and it won't be the first time he will do so, especially when it comes to Karen specifically.
Episode 13
Karen's back at the Bulletin, trying to work on her article but nothing seems to come to her mind. Meanwhile, Frank goes back to his house for the first time after the tragedy holding a newspaper that talks about his death.
Karen is then taken hostage by the Hand. Daredevil manages to let her and the other hostages escape.
Frank shows up (in costume finally) and helps Matt with a bunch of ninjas from a distance.
Karen is the only one (along Matt) who notices Frank's up there (i wonder if her heart was beating fast again? Matt can you confirm idk) and this is the last time we see him before The Punisher season 1 </3. But it's so nice that Karen is the character who gets be apart of that last time. It's also funny to picture cause everyone is such in distress for the situation they obviously don't take the time to look up at the room and see Frank. But Karen does. Also it looks nice visually it looks like he's watching over her you know?
After the worst is over, Karen is hanging out with Foggy at Josie's. The theme of loneliness circles back to her once again, and it's like it never truly leaves her side.
Karen is still struggling to write the article for the Bulletin. Mr Ellison suggests drinking some scotch, so it could help her not care too much. Karen replies that that's exactly her problem: she does infact, care too much.
Karen needs just to write the truth, her own truth at that. which is what she does. Her article turns out to be a beautiful piece about how in our own ways, we're all heroes. She even draws the comparison from how DD and Frank operate.
Also Frank blows up his own house, probably the last relic left of his humanity.
And that concludes Frank and Karen's story in Daredevil OG. I do wanna point out a mention in season 3 episode 1 (I think it comes chronologically after the Punisher season 1 but I don't think it makes that much of a difference mentioning it here).
Karen goes to Matt's place to talk to him after sometime Matt revealed to her that he's Daredevil. She says "How can I be this mad at someone who saved my life?" and I find this quote interesting, since it can also apply to Frank in a way.
She asks Matt why didn't he tell her. "Did you think I would judge you? I didn't judge Frank why would I judge you?" "Maybe you should judge Frank. Castle's a killer. I'm not." "You don't always know what motivates people to do what they do." "But i know when they lie to me, their heartbeats tell me."
I like how she's always quick to defend him when she feels like his character is being badly judged. She gives off "I can point out my man's flaws but no one else can" energy. And I do also think the favor is returned. Frank rarely judges Karen's actions.
I guess this concludes the Kastle moments in Daredevil officially. The next analysis will be about the Netflix Punisher show and then a deep dive into the MCU stuff (which is not a lot but it's what still keeps Kastle alive so good for me).
Once again I hope I didnt bore you with this long ass post, but if you do, makes sure you read part 1 first! See you soon with the Punisher breakdown! I think i'll take my sweet time with it but trust me, it's coming. kay byeeeee 🖤🩵
Kastle + kissing in a stairwell
PG-ish and also on ao3.
They’re alive. Fuck if he knows how.
They’re alive, no thanks to the fact that Karen has apparently never met a bad idea she doesn’t want to chase headfirst and yeah he’s no better but at least he knows what he’s getting into, whereas she-
He can be annoyed with her later, he decides. When they’ve come down from this. If they ever come down.
What Frank is sure of right now is this – neither of them got shot, and they are safely in one of the old warehouses he lurks in as needed, and the adrenaline isn’t wearing off as fast as it should, and-
Karen twirls and gets her mouth on his before he can finish that thought. She’s soft as a kitten and if he opened his eyes he knows he’d see hers sparkling, like she has to find the fun bits where she can, like-
“Don’t tell me outrunning cheap mercs is a turn-on for you," he murmurs when they break.
“Not one I’ve considered I might have,” almost a laugh, god she’d be such a good wife for someone – not him, he don't deserve her that way, but someone – and feather-light in his arms and why do they keep doing things in stairwells and-
“Good.”
“You saved me again.”
"Don't know that you needed my help.”
“Of course I did. Not that I think I have a choice, but-”
They’re not having this conversation. He picked a hell of a time to discover he runs overprotective – first time he’s stuck around a situation consistently enough to learn that about himself, and he knows that’s nothing to be proud of but that doesn't make it any less true – and he’s aware that she’s more than capable of handing her own consequences, she does just fine whenever he ghosts her, and-
“Not sure if I have anything else to offer you," he says instead, because he’s determined to dig his own grave one way or another.
It’s not like he thinks he owes her. She doesn't play that, and he’s trying not to. But he wants her in his life, in whatever way she wants to stick around and he doesn't manage to destroy, and he’s not sure what he even is if he ever takes a moment to breathe, probably nothing worth being, and he’s not sure-
She stayed, he reminds himself. She’s stayed through a spectacular amount of bullshit and he’s never gotten the slightest hint of actual resentment. The why-are-you-like-this eyerolls, yes, he’s quite familiar with those, but nothing like-
He doesn't deserve her. He will never deserve her. She doesn't seem to care. What the fuck does he do with that?
She takes another kiss before he can get too stuck in his head, playful, not going anywhere with it just wanting to make out. If she wanted more, she would've tried something by now, he doesn't try with subtle signals and she’s accepted that and god she’s perfect and-
“Stay with me,” she breathes. “Whatever…”
It’s easier to keep kissing her. At some point in the next few minutes, they’ll have to break and assess each other, he knows he’s got some bruises she’ll want to look at and she’s probably in comparable condition and she worries and he’s getting there and-
It doesn't matter quite yet, he thinks as he threads his fingers in her hair. Let it not matter a little while longer.
the amount of fics w karen cheating on matt with frank 😵💫 thank you writers!!!!
Karen Page x Frank Castle - The Punisher/ Daredevil I finally finished this kastle artwork! And damn, it was not easy. But I’m really happy with how it turned out, mostly because I feel like I managed to capture what these characters are supposed to be going through. Karen and Frank’s relationship is anything but simple. They’re more than friends, and the tension between them is definitely there, but they’re not lovers either (tragically. Deeply tragically). But honestly, that’s part of what makes them so compelling. The way The Punisher always softens around Karen. The way Karen supports Frank... there’s something so warm and deeply human about it that no romance movie has ever really managed to capture for me. And especially not Karen and Matt’s (Daredavil) relationship. Sorry, but to me there’s never been anything there beyond friendship / something almost sibling-like.
