Troubleshooting Space Diva

Laura's gambit last night felt so incredibly appropriate to the tone of this campaign. The M9 are, and has always been, about subverting expectations, and more than that, subverting the tragic ending. I think there's a type of story where Beau's decision to leave would have been the most appropriate outcome - an epic sacrifice, for an epic hero. Hell, I think even in Campaign 1 that would have been very thematically appropriate. Because VM were epic heroes, in the truest sense. Sam's counterspell sacrifice was maybe the clearest example of this, as one of the most iconic moments of CR1. It was emblematic of the type of story that campaign was telling.

But thinking about the defining moments of CR2 - Avantika's journal and Caleb's wall of fire, Fjord throwing his sword into the lava, offering the beacon - every one was about looking at the worst outcome, and having the balls to say, "you know what? NAH." The M9 will fight tooth and nail for the third option, the better outcome, no matter how big the risk. They might literally end a war that, to both sides, seemed inescapable, because they refused to accept that tragedy had to be the ultimate outcome.

Fjord, with his feelings on loyalty, falling just a little bit more in love with Jester for figuring out how to keep all of them safe.

Beau, who was going THROUGH IT tonight, realizing her family, this found family, was saved by the leetle blue tiefling because of 1) a crazy scheme 2) that will for sure make her laugh at least a little, and as a result NOT HAVING TO SACRIFICE ALL THE SELF WORTH SHE HAS SPENT ALL CAMPAIGN BUILDING, falling irrevocably deeply in love with her.

And then Caleb “I say I love you with spells and also Smart People are My Thing” Widogast, gets it so much worse cause not only does he fall even further in love with her, but worse, he starts to dare to hope. Because this was done in such classic Blueberry fashion, down to choosing to leave even this creepy ass hag with a happy memory. If she can be so kind to someone as awful as the woman WHO LITERALLY TOLD THEM SHE IS SUSTAINED BY MISERY, maybe it’s not “too late” after all. 

- their little back and forth when she lies and teases him that Essek said he loves him very much

- the mixture of bewilderment and amusement on Caleb’s face when Jes disguises herself as Isharnai and starts dancing around

- the ‘aww’ look he gives when she announces the Gentleman loves her sooo much

- the sly looks and grins during Nott and Jester planning out the parent trap

- the randomly turning into Capeleb (his pun, not mine) to assist in the shenanigans and Jester’s delight in his participation

- the “do you love her?” convo with Yasha, during which he shows the same faces he reserves for reactions to Jester, while fidgeting with the diamond reserved for his potential, eventual resurrection (and even if Jester was not the intended subject, he still panics at being found out, doesn’t deny loving someone, and subsequently shuts the entire conversation down)
