i dont think laurie and her relationship with dr manhattan (skull) is poorly written per se but i also think it had potential to be explored that much more deeply. she was 16 and a grown man and god became obsessed with her and no one stopped it. even her mom who wanted to keep her from being hurt in that way. and after they break up she clearly expects him to be around and she feels guilty that hes always on her mind. he takes her to mars and forgets she needs to breathe. and he looks remorseful but so distant from the fact he almost killed her.

the whole conversation they have where he knows how it'll end and he still gets mad at her. he knows she's together with dan, but still gets mad when she tells him. his lack of respect reminds me of abusive mindsets, where the perpetrator is already 100% certain in their sense of reality and views the victim's perspective as unreliable. he dismisses everything she says about the earth as shallow and limited-- she never could have changed his mind. in fact, he only does change her mind when she's at her lowest point, reliving her mother's sexual trauma without anyone to comfort her but a man who's busy holding the world in his hands.

like there's a very clear disregard for both her personality and will + her bodily autonomy. and yeah professor manhattan looks at all humans like that, but the way we mostly see it directed at a woman who he started dating as a teenager feels very purposeful and charged.

#I love laurie so much #I wish moore had fleshed out this particular aspect more bc I feel like it could mean so much more to the story if she was focused on more #like sexual trauma is very present theme in watchmen and I feel like in comparison to the other characters who experience it-#-laurie is like almost sidelined?#I get that the point is that the abuse goes unnoticed but laurie doesn't get enough autonomy in the narrative to make it compelling #idk #I have thoughts #this post was a wonderful dissection btw
