Goodbye and good luck
My favorite exchange in Before Watchmen Nite Owl was this one:
Rorschach: *on fire*
Dan: You all right?
Rorschach: Yes. No. Doesn't matter.
And then Dan is all okay uh, well on with the case I guess
Watchmen AU where everything is the same except Rorschach accepts Dan’s offer of a coat and they both roll up to Karnak wearing the silly little arctic owl suits
Nite Owl y Nite Owlito…
obsessed with this mf
wanted to add color cuz he needs his glorious red hair but idk how to paint so that'll have to wait

i need Watchmen to be relevant again dawg i need the fandom girlies with mental disorders and doctorates out here writing the most devastatingly beautiful 100k word Danror fics the world has ever seen

I wrote a lil review of Before Watchmen: Nite Owl yesterday. Here's what I thought of Before Watchmen: Rorschach (again spoilers):
BEFORE WATCHMEN: RORSCHACH
This one was considerably dumber.
I'll say this: I enjoyed the extreme Rorschach whump. Getting the shit beat of him and leaving a bloody trail through CVS to chug painkillers? A+. Getting bloody nose dabbed by sympathetic side character? great. Vomiting blood all over a diner table and passing out? standing ovation.
I loved how LB draws Walter's beautiful face.
The diner scenes were cute, would have read a whole comic that was just Walter hanging out in that diner.
So that's the positive stuff. Now:
Like first and fucking foremost: did we need a four-issue Taxi Driver pastiche? We get it, Rorschach is like Travis Bickle, that's a single-page joke not the premise for an entire miniseries.
And wow, that was a whole lotta screen time spent on a villain we don't give a shit about. Why.
Serial killer who leaves women's naked mutilated corpses around the city ugh why are we always doing this, do we have to do this?
The dialog, bro. This is some tryhard edgelord nonsense, Rorschach Would Not Say That, and also he sounds dumb. Why is he swearing?? And his journal voice is both too silly and not silly enough somehow. Moore had him say patently ridiculous shit with a kind of accidental poetry. Azzarello attempts edginess without irony and can't do the poetry.
(Side note: we now know that at some point between 1977 and 1982, Rorschach's typewriter broke I guess)
Okay not to go back to this but: it's been twenty years since I saw Taxi Driver but this is literally the same story right? Except that Rorschach is way less effective than Travis was. I guess that's the point, but - wait, what is the point exactly?
Right, if I'm being charitable, the point seems to be something like: Rorschach is obsessed with how free of human weakness he is but he's in fact as vulnerable as anyone else. He says "everyone's a victim but me" but he gets the shit beat out of him in like every scene and in the end avoids victimhood only by virtue of his enemies being fuckin idiots so maybe he's not doing as great as he thinks he is. But he needs to believe this because he was a little boy who was victimized by adults and he has lived his life telling himself he is not that little boy anymore and he is absolutely still that little boy. What happens to him near the end is deliberately similar to (if way less gendered than) what happens to Nancy (gross) but later he dismissively calls her a victim, then goes and murders her attacker like that's gonna somehow make him not a victim.
Did I get that right? I like that idea actually. I'd love to read a good comic that used that idea.
On a slightly more positive note: I know I said I was annoyed by the Taxi Driver stuff but I liked Nancy anyway. I was going to say "Walter's relationship with Nancy" but the relationship is all on her end. He does work suspiciously hard to make sure she knows that, though - she's all "you come in her a lot" and he's all "it's not to see you!" like dude calm down. But in this case I believed him. I liked the idea that he has this one positive presence in his life and this one place where he feels relatively safe and it's not about him having a crush on her or something.
So it's pretty weird when he asks her to dinner? Like He Would Not Do That, even within the parameters of this somewhat lax-Rorschach-characterization story? I did like how he did it, though - awkward as fuck with showing her the money and then being all "is that enough to thank you?" Like he's trying to make sure she knows it's purely about balancing a debt but he just comes off as weird and socially clueless. I gotta say, Nancy, not seeing what the appeal is here. Okay, I do, but I shouldn't.
I wanted them to meet up at the end. Instead we got more gratuitous woman-assault porn, great.
Right right, the point of them not meeting is that he has cut off any possibility of human connection by declaring himself separate from humanity. Given who he is, they can't meet. I get it, I just find it boring. Anyway I want to write some fanfic and put Nancy in it so she can be in a less stupid story.
(Side note: why does nobody seem to get that the Gunga Diner is in fact an Indian restaurant?)
I read a couple of the Before Watchmen books (the ones with Rorschach in em) and although they are effectively fanfic and there is nothing but the og comic for me I gave em a try. After all I like fanfic! They were honestly a bit silly but had their moments. Will start with the Nite Owl one (uh spoilers obviously):
BEFORE WATCHMEN: NITE OWL
Not gonna say much about the Dan-only bits because this is a Rorschach blog and they were fairly inoffensive. The Dan/Twlight Lady stuff was adorable honestly. The Hollis stuff was fine. (Dan's backstory though...it wasn't wrong exactly, but did we need a heavy abuse backstory for Dan? It just seemed lazy to me. Like, there are other reasons someone might end up in this line of work.)
Onto the Rorschach bits:
Okay first of all: did the End is Nigh sign need an origin story?? This was so fuckin goofy. Plus I always thought the sign-toting hobo persona was sort of a late creation, more of a post-going-full-Rorschach thing and not something he'd been doing since the 60's. At this point in his story he's still a normal(ish) guy with a full-time job and stuff, right?
And he should definitely not be murdering people yet. Especially as a child omg! Again, wasn't it a key part of his character that he didn't kill people until Grice sent him round the bend? And I don't like the idea that he's been a murderous psycho since he was a little kid ffs, when we see him as a kid in the orig comic he is mostly scared and innocent, he only attacks those kids cuz they push him and he loses it, it's not this cold-blooded calculated thing like JMS has it. I feel like JMS wanted to move Rorschach's pivotal moments earlier in the timeline, rather than just laying some groundwork for them. Putting up some red flags, as it were.
(Side note: why is Rorschach wearing half-undone boxing hand wraps in one and only one scene? that was weird. unimportant, but weird)
By the way: the villain was stupid and made no sense. I get that he was a foil/double for Rorschach but you could do that without making him so corny.
So that's what I didn't like. What I did like:
Basically all the Danror parts. Rorschach getting super jealous over Twilight Lady. Dan and Rorschach being married in general. (Dan ditches TL to go after him!) Their little breakup in the middle. Their little breakup at the end oh nooo. Their dialog is funny and cute. "You've been going left for a long time" that's the second time Rorschach mentions Dan's dick omg.
I like how AK draws Rorschach's 26yo face.
Rorschach screaming and breaking his handcuffs while sitting on a pile of burning corpses and then flying out of a room on fire - that was pretty radical of him.
The whole thing about him listening to the news and consuming a steady stream of human horrors, not to motivate himself (he doesn't need that) but to numb himself. I liked that.
Walter out of costume acting very different from Rorschach but just as weird. JMS does this odd thing with him where he kinda repeats phrases after hearing them? Like he's testing them, or studying their absurdity? I dunno what's going on there exactly but it makes him seem super neuro-atypical which is on point. It gives a spin to the way Rorschach in costume talks like a hard-boiled movie character...like Walter/Rorschach is this patchwork of echoed language instead of someone who can just say what he means. He does not have a normal sense of self. (That should pre-date Grice btw. Unlike the murdering.)
Anyway, my verdict: parts of it were dumb and parts were fun and the Danror shit was adorable. B+ fanfic!
