The fact of the matter is that sometimes staying closeted for your own safety isn’t just about fear of physical violence. Sometimes it’s because you don’t think that you could handle the rejection, judgement, and/or emotional abuse that could come with coming out. Sometimes it’s because you don’t know what coming out would entail and you’re scared to find out. Staying closeted (with everyone or with some people) is your choice. Put your wellbeing above all else. I love you, stay safe.

this is completely true and so important. a few days ago my mom forced my to come out to her and even though she didn’t say anything bad, i still feel awful. i feel like people who aren’t lgbtq+ don’t understand how stressful coming out can be for someone, especially when they don’t know what the reaction will be.  after you come out the first time, it never truly stops. you still have to explain your sexuality and/or gender identity to people for most if not the rest of your life. so if someone chooses not to come out, it’s their choice, not anyone else’s.
