Renny was born in a camp outside Portica to Liara and Quintis Autumnsmith. He lost his parents before the age of two and was taken in by his mother’s research partner, Cashel Krane. Soon after Cashel, he was forced to flee south with Thraug and Edwyn to escape an oncoming army.
Edwyn and Renny were brought up in the secluded village of Avabor. They spent their days exploring the woods and mentoring under Cashel on a great deal of subjects.
As they grew older it became apparent that, despite Renny’s lineage of skilled magic users, he lacked any magical ability of his own. This plagued Renny who often felt as if he were pitted against Edwyn for Cashel’s approval.
Things only worsened when Renny developed a strange case of insomnia. As he entered his teens, it became clear the sleeplessness was not of normal origins. He would be up for weeks at a time and Cashel’s remedies could only make the boy’s condition bearable at best.
With the daunting task of keeping up with Edwyn, enduring Cashel on a daily basis, and his exhausted mental state, Renny snapped one day and had it out with Cashel. The result almost destroyed Edwyn and Renny’s friendship and drove Renny out of the house.
The 14 year old flourished on his own, as much as his illness would allow. He built himself a treehouse to live in, and with Thraug’s help on the rickety structure, it became a presentable home. Around this time Renny was indoctrinated as a junior member of the village watch. Under their guidance, he excelled in tracking, navigation, and archery. Because of his condition, he was often assigned to the night watch. He took this time at night to practice playing the flute, and his playing has become a fixture of the nighttime soundscape of Avabor.
Edwyn and Renny’s friendship strengthened as they grew older. Free from feeling the need to compete with each other led to a great respect for one another. The two are now nearly inseparable during their free time. Renny has always been protective of Edwyn and would do just about anything for him.
