Juno Jagger strikes fear into the hearts of everyone in Aurora Bay that has a Wikipedia article. And that is exactly how she wants it to be. But all people evolved and Juno wasn’t born that way.
Born in Long Beach, Juno had always set her sights on big things. As the only child of Angie and Jeremiah Jagger it seemed like almost everything she got in life was easy. She was good in school, popular with everyone around her. The kind of girl who had a smile that could brighten everyone’s day. She was optimistic and at the time of her senior year in high school incredibly in love. Her boyfriend seemed to match her energy. It was almost a picture out of pure Americana. There were talks of marriage before college and a promise ring signaling the rest of their lives but shortly after graduation a cruise with his friends turned turned into a nightmare and the original group five came back with someone missing.
It had been the love of her life and soon an investigation took place. The media came crashing in and covering the story, trying to decipher who had done the unforgivable. Almost every media outlet for months talked about the big mystery. But the reality of it had left an eighteen year old Juno in shambles. And perhaps more importantly it had thrust Juno into the spotlight. A spotlight that at the time she didn’t want nor crave. Her hometown wasn’t small but the community felt so tiny. There was a time where she couldn’t even turn a corner without people recognizing her face from the news. She’d be stopped almost every day by people telling her how sorry she was for her loss. The longer it went on the more numb she began to feel about it. The comments started to not phase her as much. That was when things started to change.
By the time of the trial; Juno had sort of come to accept that this was her life. At 22 she had finished college with a degree in journalism but very little direction. She didn’t actually care about any of it. It was just a way to pass the time and not think about what had happened. Juno never had a chance to be anyone other than the girlfriend of someone taken far too young. she was one half of a tragedy that tore apart the picturesque image of young love. She knew by her twenties that there was always someone watching and she wanted the optics to look favorably upon anyone connected to her befriends memory. She didn’t step out of line because she knew the true crime weirdos would be on her and claiming she had something to do with a death she wasn’t even around for.
In her last year of college her boyfriend had gotten the justice he deserved. But that didn’t leave Juno feeling fulfilled. It left her empty because the closure didn’t make her happy. Not much was making her happy anymore because she spent so much of the last few years of her life under such stress. She thought people would stop knocking on her door when it was over. She’d seen all the stories. As soon as a news cycle had a new case they would always move on.
The debt her almost fiancés family had been left in because of the trial was a whole other story. They were running the risk of losing everything. People always seemed to think that if you won a settlement in a trial you’re rich now, but so much of them goes to legal expenses, funeral preparations and just trying to survive. They hadn’t come from much money and their son was planning on helping support them when he finished with college. But with him gone Juno felt like she owed it to them. He had a little sister that had needed help to be put through college. There wasn’t a lot they could do on their own. But Juno’s degree and a face made for cameras had people wanting to speak to her. They wanted to hire because she had something to her that made people listen. She had a history and a tragedy that made people fall utterly in love with her. She had a way to help the family that she had once thought was going to be her own, without exploiting his memory.
And that was how Juno put her degree to use. For the next few years she became loved in Los Angeles for her bright smile and witty remarks. Always commenting on how utterly ridiculous the concept of a celebrity was. How people and para social relationships were just maddening
She was the girl who came out on top who had suffered a horrible tragedy. But it still felt empty. The stories became a paycheck . She had managed to dig his family out from financial ruin but it had cost her her morality. She stopped caring so much about the news on tv and started to make her own stories. Some good but plenty of them bad.
The stories got better but the lies started to trickle in. The idea of making people seem more dramatic and controversial than they really are. If Juno had just sat back and thought about what she was doing maybe she would have realized that her past was clearly still affecting her. Still hurting her from beyond. She’d never had real time to grow up and grieve. She was part of a tragedy and never got to move on from it emotionally. And now she was starting to make up things to stay on people’s radar. After a bit of controversy Juno found herself in Aurora Bay and starting anew.
At first she was bored but then the stories started coming to her. Actors who are recovering from drug abuse. People roaming the streets while having served time. Reality tv stars in hiding. The town was full of stories and Juno was invested. Had finally become morally bankrupt or is there still a chance she could make it out of the news cycle that has become her life forever?
