Many lgbt teenagers and young adults growing up on the internet today have socially conservative beliefs that they voice at all times that they got from their conservative parents which theyβve never challenged because they think the life experience of being gay or trans makes them politically progressive
This is why I hate it when people say something homophobic and then go βso youβre really accusing me, a whole ass lesbian, of being homophobic πβ like yeah

Hot take but actors are allowed to lie about their personal lives if thatβs what it takes for them to have some privacy. Stop being nosy bitches they donβt owe you anything.
Unfriendly reminder that if you're displeased with a piece of fanfiction your courses of action are:
Read something else
Bitch PRIVATELY to friends
Write your own take on the premise (strongly recommend!)
All of the above
Under no circumstances should you try to "politely" critique the author who put the story up as a hobby. For free. Especially if the story in question is multiple years old. Ao3 is not Goodreads
Am I missing something?
I've seen, quite a few times now, people saying that Erik in Phantom of the Opera is weird cuz he like "groomed" Christine. And acting like it took years.
CANONICALLY that's Not true. Like, what version are y'all reading? I've read the De Mattos & Ribiere translations. In Both of those, he's known Christine for months. 6-9 MAX.
He didn't get her while she was underage/in school. And he didn't go into this looking for a relationship. There's actually no fucking evidence of that anywhere in Leroux's novel (unless you know something from like the original French novel that's not in any of the translations that I have)
Her father died, Madame Valerius put her into the Paris conservatoire, she got accepted into the Opera Garnier.
She admits that she'd lost herself after her father's death. Raoul says that at the conservatoire she was like a souless, singing automaton. The ballet girls point out that a few months ago she was bleating.
Christine is NEW at the Opera. She's not some longstanding primadonna like Carlotta. She's like freshly 20yo.
Erik doesn't even call himself the Angel of Music until SHE asks if he is.
He just asks if she'll allow him to teach her.
Obviously Erik saw a sad, lonely new girl and offered help.
He goes quiet the day she mentions Raoul because I think it hits him that he's developed feelings. He comes back the next day and tells her that he can't keep teaching her if she's in love with someone else. He admits after he kidnaps her the 1st time that he fell in love with her.
Before that, he was fully committed to living his life in isolation, mildly harassing the directors and working on Don Juan. His PLAN was to finish it, lay down in the coffin and die, NOT to kidnap anyone or get married.
Did he manipulate her, yes? But grooming?
OP, unfortunately we live in a time where people think 30yo women are babies who can't speak or act for themselfs. I've unironically seen people argue that children being friends with slightly younger children is grooming. "Grooming" may have no place in the text, but the meaning of this word have been completely destroyed. Now any relationship mildly toxic or complicated is "grooming", any mild misunderstanding is "manipulation" and anyone I dislike is a "narcissist". Words have lost their meaning and people weaponize therapy speech against everything and anything to sound more serious...
Erik is a character that spent a life of isolation, rejection, abuse and dehumanization, in the 19th century, he cannot live nor exist without being othered by people. His own mother was his first abuser, and he never knew love or human compassion. Of course he lashes out and acts cruelly and doesn't respect other's boundaries. He's deeply mentally ill and desperate to find even one bit of love and warmth he never had his entire life, but people take this and try to twist his character into some evil irredimable monster. Some people act like the mere fact he wants to be loved is an act of "selfishness/manipulation/grooming" itself.
And so many people ignore the complexity of his and Christine's relationship and act like he never cared about her, which is straight up false. He ends the story crying and saying how much she was a good, honest girl and how he loved her too much to continue the forced marriage. Anyway, this kind of discourse is so exhausting, it's like people are coming up with new terms to paint Erik as evil even if it has nothing to do with the text.

I'm reading a study on how nurses define the term 'drug seeking', and what makes them more likely to put the 'drug-seeker' label on a patient's charts and. well. let me just throw down some quotes
"Needy, unable to cope" (<- you try coping with chronic pain)
"Comfort seeking" (<- you mean.. having a preference for not being in pain.. how criminal)
"Using or trying to obtain drugs on a long-term, chronic base" (<- do you understand what 'chronic pain' means.)
"Asking for pain med then returning to sleep."
"States heβs level 10 pain, but does not appear to be in pain (or β5= on appearance)." (<- it is well-known that chronic pain patients tend not to display pain in the same way as acute pain patients)
"Dramatic response to pain" (<- notice how this directly contradicts the comment above. you cannot win)
"Gets IV med, then leaves unit to smoke or walk around" (<- wow requiring medication and then going off to do something you needed pain meds to be able to do is so suspicious)
the article itself put it best when it says: βsome comments depict patients trying to apply sound pain management principles, such as continuing to take medication for persistent painβ. no wonder all the other literature on the matter says that women of colour are the most likely group to be labelled drug-seeking. this shit is entirely vibes-based (read: based on the prejudices of nurses and doctors)

To my 25 - 35 year olds, you've reached the age where people around you are starting to give up on themselves because they think it's too late. Don't let that energy rub off on you. It's not too late.

Something by I love about Black Menswear is how theyβre not afraid of color and personality. Itβs not just the same boring black or blue suit jacket every time. Itβs also just very dapper.
YESSS i especially love the florals...

if theres one thing that really pissed me off from my 3 years of architecture i took in high school it's learning about how we used to have all these little techniques to maximize or minimize heat or warmth and now we just merrily abandoned all those to have the same copypaste style buildings everywhere that are often INCREDIBLY unoptimized to the local weather and climate so we can just throw more money at our heating and cooling bills
where i live it is hot as balls approximately 80% of the year. i do not want a massive butt-ugly grey mcmansion with a huge echoey open-concept kitchen-livingroom-foyer-diningroom-staircase that has huge windows so i can have an hvac unit the size of a barge heaving and straining to keep it at a constant 72 the grees. i want a north indian traditional style home with small windows to force the airflow to cool, decorative grates to limit the amount of sunlight, and a COURTYARD with a POND *smashes unspecified large object*
I hate learning about instances of "oh yeah we know how to do that, we just don't".
this is exactly why I love talking about historical passive heating and cooling techniques
oh wow the glass-tower office buildings we constructed when we thought air conditioning and central heating would never have downsides...have downsides?
and we're still building them?
while the Victorian house museum where I work, with thick walls and small windows and big wooden shutters stays ~10 degrees above (winter) or below (summer) the outside temperature for days on end with no help at all?
uh. okay then
(also public transit. the history of public transit in the US is infuriating, because we had it! and then we destroyed it!)
THIS IS SO TRUE
