Wrong: Ada Lovelace invented computer science and immediately tried to use it to cheat at gambling because she was Lord Byron's daughter.
Right: Ada Lovelace invented computer science and immediately tried to use it to cheat at gambling because that was the closest you could get in 1850 to being a Super Mario 64 speedrunner.
This is how I found out that Ada Lovelace was Lord Byrons daughter
Well, yeah. That's why she received the unusual education which laid the foundation for her later discoveries in the first place. Her mother, Lady Byron, firmly believed three things:
It was her responsibility as a mother to ensure that Ada didn't turn out like her father;
Fundamentally, the thing that was wrong with Lord Byron is that he was a poet; and
The opposite of poetry is math.
Ada Lovelace's biography handily illustrates how well this theory worked out in practice.

Why are there just blobs of fake rubber meat that a bunch of unrelated microbes can build in the dirt but they've only ever been found in china and can't be classified any further than "biological objects"

reblog for more responses please
if you are from the united kingdom, do you know what manumission was in the context of chattel slavery?

if you are from the united kingdom, do you know the details regarding reparations to involved parties in the emancipation proclaimation?
yes
no
not from the uk
okay, lets look at the numbers here
out of all respondants in the united kingdom, only about 1 in 5 know about apprenticeship
apprenticeship was the period right after the slavery abolition act. formerly enslaved people over the age of 6 were required to continue working without pay for 45 hours a week for up to 6 years. this system was ended earlier than originally penned.
out of all respondants from the uk, only about 1 in 5 know what manumission was
manumission was the mechanism through which an enslaved person could buy or earn their freedom. more often than not, at least in the caribbean it was cold hard cash that earned your freedom, and there are numerous accounts of slave owners taking all the money their slaves had saved towards their manumission from them for flimsy reasons to prevent them from buying their freedom.
out of all respondants from the uk, a little more than 1 in 4 know the details of reparations in the slavery abolition act
£20 million in compensation was provided to slave owners, not to slaves. that is the equivalent of over £2 billion today. due to the mechanism by which that compensation was funded, the last of this debt was paid in 2015. in that same year, david cameron spoke in jamaica and refused reparations to the caribbean, urging us to move on.
this is a flawed poll, theres only 2k responses on the most answered one, and the number of respondants is not consistent. theres no guarantee that everyone who did one did both the other two. this is an american centric website, so 85% of respondants were disqualified from the start. but the question then remains:
why dont you, uk citizen, know this?
i learned this in school, i was tested on it, it was taught in mandatory subjects throughout my education. even after i no longer had to do history or social studies, theres another mandatory history module in the second year of our A level equivalent (CAPE).
this is your history too, and most of you dont know it! you need to ask yourself why theyre keeping this from you.
as always, i recommend the work of hillary md beckles. how britain underdeveloped the caribbean and britains black debt. however this year i would like to point you to the repair campaign as well, which is petitioning for reparations from europe (including the uk)

friend who thinks about family annihilators too much: you know if that guy also had kids he would be a family annihilator
friend who thinks about family annihilators too much: you don't get it, this is important because of how we as a society react to the crime. a guy who kills his wife is not seen as on the level of evil as a family annihilator even with the exact same pathology and potential. a lot of mass shooters had records of domestic violence but they were not considered such a threat until they escalated. why is hurting women never a warning sign? there is more concern over the future of a man who hurts an animal than one who hurts a woman. if he hurts an animal, he's acting like a serial killer. if he hurts a woman, it's one mistake that shouldn't ruin his life. do you ever think about that
I also think that the strength gap is at least partially manufactured women would in fact be stronger overall if little girls were encouraged to do physically taxing games and activities and eat their fill while they’re growing vs having to constantly diet and be sedentary indoors (or god forbid do intense cardio while under-eating). The amount of adult women honestly afraid to lift weights bc they think they’ll get bulky as though bulking isn’t a full time job that athletes have to spend all their time on and anyone on earth gets shredded from just using their adult muscles for their intended purpose, girl your bone density 🥀
if you say women are intentionally nerfed from birth in 2026 people look at you like you’re insane and start condescendingly telling you about how women are just better at different things (but not during their periods haha) but this was a completely basic feminist talking point I grew up with like “girls can do it too! [shot of little girls climbing and running with boys]” nickelodeon commercial tier base level I hate it how is everyone suddenly dumber than the average 7 year old
yeah she's a total nepo baby. I heard her dad was one of floop's fooglies
