yes. yes he did. i’m also gonna direct you to the real life ‘lord of the flies’ which occured in the 1960s, when six tongan schoolboys got stranded on a desert island for over a year before being rescued by an australian fisherman (who, it should be noted, later took on all six as crewmembers because the reason they were out in the first place was because they wanted to see the world, and named his ship the Ata after the island they were stranded on). nobody died. the only injuries that occurred were accidental, and when one of the boys broke his leg falling down a cliff, the others braced it and looked after him so well that it healed perfectly. if they argued, then they would literally go to opposite sides of the island until they’d cooled off. after leaving the island, they remained friends for the rest of their lives. here’s a photo of them as adults, with their rescuer (who is third from the left) and other members of his crew.

i read about this in rutger bregman’s human kind, a book i cannot recommend highly enough, but if you don’t want to go and read a whole book about the inherent goodness of humanity (which again, you really should) then the relevant excerpt can be found here.

i went for the atla live in concert a few weeks ago — and it was great, strongly recommend going if you get the chance — but also it has to be some kind of time-honoured tradition at this point that any avatar property ever must zutarabait because they cut out like half the ka scenes but included the zutara hug and final agni kai and seeing my theatre react to it was so amusing — gasps, knowing oooos, one girl a few rows down from me squealed (mood), so on and so forth.

they laid it on thick enough in fact that my friend who’s never even seen one episode of the show asked me afterward why katara ended up with aang instead of zuko & i was like welcome to the club queen we’ve all been asking that question for the past twenty years.

anyway all this to say that this is why the argument that zutara shippers were delusional or reading too much into things has never held water because both the show & its marketing intentionally laid that groundwork and played it up for all it was worth, and still do! no smoke without fire, no juggernaut ship without bait. any reasonable audience that hasn’t been living under a rock recognizes romantic coding when its fed to them & if its served up so blatantly on a silver platter… well then. can’t really blame anyone for eating it up, can you?
