Story wise, I think they used to be kid trainers with a sense of justice, but with a troubled background (Family neglect, rich but asshole parents (A), past abusive family members, poverty, etc (M)). Trying to make it big as a trainer in a backwater region (Hoenn was probably even more underdeveloped and the government ignored the issue)

M's family probably had past connection to team rocket and is continuously hounded by them.

A and M are frenemy/rivals (especially M who challenges A every time he reaches certain checkpoint but also willing to help A. M taught him about daycare, contests, EV training, etc). They did work together to banish an old Hoenn Rocket branch from the region.

However, banishing the villainous organization never changed the region for the better. Authorities still ignores the issue of their underdeveloped country,

They became jaded with so-called adults and the authorities, from the heroic trainer, they became the villainous adults they despised. A hero to villain origin story.

A's family was a fishing business-people who cared less about the 'mon they're selling, even their "concern" about the environment was cuz of profits. And raised in nouveau-riche privileged environment, he's probably taught to be materialistic/performative af, which makes A hated fellow humans because "my pokemons are more pure, they don't judge people like these mfs."

M's family was a struggling single mom, his late (abusive) father was a rocket member. Probably having a secret of old team R's plans, he always gets hounded by it. He just wants to help his struggling community despite all the hate he gets for being associated with a criminal team, like he wants to be accepted by fellow humans again.
