Man. What do you do when you can see your friend peeking into a pipeline. You know, in general, they have the same values as you. That they are a kind, generous, loving person, and though some of their beliefs don't line up with yours, they aren't harmful and they come from a good place. But then they try beef tallow sunscreen. Or they mention they tried (but didn't like and stopped doing) a fitness routine that you know for a fact was founded by, and perpetuates, fascism. That they're taking homeopathic medicine and sunning their perineum. That they are very intelligent and competent, and you know that doesn't negate anyone's ability to be swindled, but you don't know how to approach them about it without sounding condescending or patronizing.
I don't want to lose my friend. But i'm also very aware i put my foot in my mouth a lot and i'm prone to paternalism (maternalism? Parentalism?). I think i'm right more than i am, but i also know for a fact that i'm right about some if these things, like beef tallow is not fucking sunscreen. Do i just...say my thoughts on it and let them work it out? Idk man i...i don't wanna lose my friend.
Sometimes a singular person will like a very old, 0 note post and its kinda the same feeling of cleaning out your closet and finding a bunch of old stuff.
every so often i remember how awesome the modern interconnected multicultural world is. i grew up getting to hear fairy tales from all over the world. africa, asia, europe, america. everywhere in between. i can have bagels for breakfast, curry for lunch, and ramen for dinner without even leaving the city limits. music and art and philosophy and technology that originated thousands of miles and years apart from eachother have come together and interwoven into something greater than the sum of its parts. its hard not fall into despair when thinking about the horrors but god. god the wonders.
I mean the whole damn point of the Nativity story is that the supposed son of God (interpret Jesus how you fucking want, of course) was born to a couple of poor, exhausted peasants in the stable for the inn, and his first bed was a feeding trough for animals. That would nowadays be like a poor couple where the mother gives birth in a parking garage behind the motel because they couldn’t find a better place and nobody else would take them in. It’s a pretty gritty setting, and the idea is that God was reborn in some of the rock-bottom lowest circumstances. The only thing majestic was all the angels and shit, and of course motherly love
I get that a lot of the art portraying Madonna and Child as fabulously wealthy europeans in splendid robes and golden light was meant to glorify God + whichever nobility was sponsoring the artist, and while of course it’s genuinely beautiful art, it just always struck me as horribly missing the point, which is that the supposed son of God started in incredibly humble circumstances, among the kind of people that everyone else looks down on
‘Massacre des Innocents’ by Leon Cogniét, 1824. Although the Feast of the Holy Innocents is in a couple of days time, this painting is still really relevant in that it portrays Mary as how She really was: a scared refugee mum, so fearful that Her son was going to be one of the Innocents killed by King Herod.
My new favorite mordern interpretation is this work, José y Maria by Everett Patterson (http://www.everettpatterson.com)
I had to look at this like FIVE TIMES to register all the layers of symbolism going into the piece by Patterson.
The hoodie as a veil.
Weisman cigarettes
Each of them is haloed by an advertisement sticker.
No Vacancy sign on the motel.
Dove sticker over Maria’s head.
Neon sign with a star symbol also over Maria’s head.
The crown over the ‘Dave’s City Motel’ sign. “New Manger.”
The sign behind Jose’s elbow likely says ‘Herod.’
The wee little plant growing through the cracks at their feet.
It’s like a New Testament ‘I Spy.’ I love it!
Ugh.
New favorite interpretation of the nativity.
Ezekiel 34 15-16 on the phone
Good news sticker above José
Maria sitting on a donkey
Shepherd Watches advertisement in the newspaper
Gloria sticker on the payphone
from an exhibit of nativity sets in barcelona (2023), with jesus born next to atm machines (top), in a war-destroyed movie theater (middle), and in an alley (bottom, featuring graffiti saying “coronavirus”, “no human being is illegal”, and the anarchist symbol)

IDK it pisses me off the way people act like murderers are some sort of great puzzle to be solved when 90% of the time its literally just a boring freak that hates women
Being 11 was terrible i would not wish it on anyone
"If you broke a bone, you'd know"
Okay well i broke my toe, went to work 15 hours later, walked on it for 9 hours while moving heavy shit, went home for 3 hours, went to a funeral in heels for 4 hours, went home and prepared for a 3 hour college class, and continued with a schedule like this for almost THREE WEEKS before i went to the doctor and verified that yes, it is in fact broken.
DON'T underestimate my stupidity.

I hate doing self-promotion
But it's literally part of my job, alas. So I'll suffer through the anxiety and feeling of imposition, because:
There's a set of new hardcover editions releasing from Simon and Schuster, starting with a single volume of Into the Labyrinth and Jewel of the Endless Erg, so as a special bonus, anyone who pre-orders the new Mage Errant hardcover is getting a brand new exclusive* Mage Errant short story, The Stargazer’s Tower! The Stargazer’s Tower is an homage to Arcane Ascension and Slay the Spire, and I had an absolute blast writing it. All you need to do to get it? Email your proof of pre-order to [email protected]. That’s it! I’ll respond with your copy of the short story within a few days. Pre-orders are the single best thing you can do to help a book launch succeed, so if you are so inclined, that would be amazing! (Not just for me- seriously, if any authors you like have books you're looking forward to, pre-order them if you can! Times are tough for authors these days! (Who aren't they tough for? Answer: capitalist exploiters, who are actively waging class war against the rest of us. Will buying my anticapitalist books fight capitalism? Probably not, but they might at least help you make it through the day.))
Anyhow, if you want the short story:
pre-order it before release day (September 29th) and
send proof of pre-order to [email protected],
and you get the story free!

* Exclusive for one year from release of the new hardcover. If you can’t afford to pre-order right now (times are tough, thanks capitalism!), no worries; you’ll get your hands on it eventually.

Pre-order your hardback copy of Into the Labyrinth HERE!
an under talked about aspect of grief is the guilt that comes a few years down the line when the future has grown quite substantially and the person you lost is getting harder and harder to translate and imbue into to the present moment. like even though all you want to do is keep their memory alive, the world keeps getting so much bigger around it. you can’t help but think i’m doing a terrible job at bringing you onwards with me. and i don’t know how to change that at all
look, i work at a morgue, i get to see every day how withered and small bodies can get when someone was sick. it’s awful. do you know how bone-thin a leg can get. or how a stomach really looks beneath the ribs when it’s wasted away. the way people’s eyes and cheeks press in to their skull like they’re clinging on for dear life. they died like that, and you want to try and sell me a lie, a pill, a miracle cure that’ll make me live in that state? that’ll make my friends look like that, my family, the people i love? to see corpses in them?
this job makes me appreciate all the more bodies lived in and well-loved. please eat that second serving. please give yourself treats as much as you want. life is not long enough to suffer through it. you’ll be plenty skinny when you’re dead.
Watching Rowan Ellis's video on boredom and being like "yes, rolling dice for a list of things i want to do and timing how long until i get bored makes perfect sense..." like maybe i do, in fact, have some AD, and even possibly, some HD.
Never used churu before. My cat needs frequent medicine now, and I got a powdered version that needs to be mixed with food, but his appetite is unpredictable lately and we cant leave things out for the other cat to ingest, so I got some churu to just mix with the meds.
Dude it really is fuckin cat crack. Never seen them so excited about treats and they love treats. And now that he's regularly taking his actual medicine and not throwing up (the non-powder stuff was very bitter), he seems to be feeling way better. He's bothering me for cuddles every waking minute again. It's so nice. Thanks churu for your disgusting meat paste cat crack. Idk how you do it.

Yesterday, 6am: stubs my toe on bed frame.
9am: considers it may be broken. Refuses to get it checked.
11 am: delicately manages to put on slippers and goes out to buy alcohol.
5pm: finally lays down to sleep.

5am: goes home and yakes care of cat that needs 5million medications
7am: lays down for nap
9:30 am: wakes up, has coffee and some food, fixes makeup and gets dressed
11:30 am: attends funeral...in heels. Shows people there mt very swollen very obviously bruised foot.
4pm: arrives back home. Opens can of delicious alcoholic cider
6pm: attends class via zoom, now with wine.
9pm: class ends, finish second glass of wine. Get third.
9:30pm: cereal
10:00pm: WHY IS IT TEN
I wasnt sure but i do think my toe is, in fact, broken. The bruise is halfway up my foot. Going to work today (manual labor) and then a funeral (wearing heels) probably did not help, but i have a good 29 hours where i don't have to do anything on my feet except take the cat in for bloodwork so that should be plenty of time right. Right.
