Unusually, I think, for a TOS Kirk stan, the "Risk is our business" speech is not one of my personal favorites from him, but I still appreciate it for what it is, and what it was at the time.
Its episode, "Return to Tomorrow" (arguably a kind of Platonic ideal of TOS episodes: not the greatest, but very intensely Star Trek), was filmed between November 20th and November 28th of 1967 and aired the following February, in 1968. The Apollo moon landing of fifty-seven years ago today took place over a year after that, 20 July 1969.
So I thought some of you all might enjoy it on this blessèd occasion:
They used to say if man could fly, he'd have wings. But he did fly. He discovered he had to. Do you wish that the first Apollo mission hadn't reached the moon, or that we hadn't gone on to Mars and then to the nearest star? That's like saying you wish that you still operated with scalpels and sewed your patients up with catgut like your great-great-great-great-grandfather used to. I'm in command. I could order this. But I'm not, because Dr. McCoy is right in pointing out the enormous danger potential in any contact with life and intelligence as fantastically advanced as this. But I must point out that the possibilities, the potential for knowledge and advancement is equally great. Risk! Risk is our business. That's what the starship is all about! That's why we're aboard her! You may dissent without prejudice. Do I hear a negative vote?

I translated the comic dialogue using a translation tool, so please excuse any awkward phrasing.
i think all quiet on the western front and the lord of the rings are in direct conversation with each other, as in theyre the retelling of the same war with one saying here’s what happened, we all died, and it did not matter at all and another going hush little boy, of course we won, of course your friends came back
someone should remake lord of the rings as a grandfather telling a fantasy story to his grand child with flashbacks to world war one showing the dead boys and men the characters were based on. grandpa why didn’t they just fly. because they didn’t. they didn’t.
i’m fine
I will never get over how Tolkien & Lewis took the horrors of war and spun them into fantasy.
Shivering in the trenches dreaming of cozy hobbit holes, shaking as bombs pockmark a forest and imagining each shallow mud-filled crater contains a new world—that maybe there are still as many beautiful things in the universe as there are bombs—that maybe the world is bigger than this moment and this ugliness and one day this will be a peaceful forest again full of small ponds.
I mean look at these photos of the shell craters in Sanctuary Woods, near Ypres Belgium and tell me it’s not the Wood Between The Worlds:
…oh.
It’s also the Dead Marshes.
Yeah, The Dead Marshes is literally just The Mud That Ate People in Belgium

I did it again. I drew them again.
Help it is the only thing in my mind aaaa
After the War of Wrath, Maglor cast the Silmaril into the sea and left his people behind. He wandered alone along the shores of the world, accompanied only by the tides, the birds, and his unending songs of regret.
After all the mental exhaustion lately, the emotional upheavals, there's something deeply satisfying about swimming in the ocean during summer time. You have something to work against, let yourself drift in the waves and fall asleep immediately in the afternoon.

Sniff
Lucifer taking Alastor on a day(drinking) trip to Gluttony! I feel like this would be one of their mutual favorite Rings! Yellow light and lots of yellow in a palette was a learning curve but a delightful challenge! And drawing vine-snake and poppet antics was SO fun!
things that made me stop wanting to die that require no effort whatsoever
change the color used to highlight text on your laptop
move the pictures on your wall
stack whatever clutter is in your room into piles even if you don’t have time to clean it all
slightly vary your commute, even just by one street
change where you sit and scroll aimlessly on your phone even if it’s only to the chair in your room instead of your bed
drink water or juice out of a wine glass in the morning because nothing is real
shower with the lights off, without music
buy $3 flowers at trader joe’s—they look bad next to the more expensive ones but they look so good in your room
start typing things you don’t post into your notes. your thoughts can be worth documenting even if you don’t deem them worth sharing
wake up super early just once. you don’t have to make it a habit it’s just extra satisfying to go to bed that night
listen to the entirety of your favorite album from 2015
Almost all of these are about variety. Humans need stimulation! We need enrichment! We literally cannot do the same thing every day!
The other day I was feeling miserable, so I hopped on a bus and rode it all the way back to where I’d started, and my brain, which had finally had some proper stimulation via new environments, was suddenly ready to go again!
This is why taking walks/drives and trying new hobbies are good for you! Don’t turn yourself into a sad zoo animal! You need some pumpkins to roll around in your enclosure!
ITS BACK!!!!!
god i fucking love the quote “dont turn yourself into a sad zoo animal” it has really inspired me!
I've always wanted to draw something for Mermay and the stars have aligned this year.
Happy 5/20!
