I was thinking a lot about alternate gameplay for his fights during this

My idea was that instead of having a health bar that gradually wears down and triggers his next phase, he would have little gems ("conduits", I don't have a better name for them) that act as a way for him to channel his magic. He starts by using them to attack, such as the ones at his wrist allowing him to catch Link's sword in a magic grip. Link has to engage in each attack so that he can destroy the conduit. Once all the conduits are destroyed, Ghirahim's core becomes exposed and he loses magic access, forcing him to engage in a traditional swordfight in which Link has to destroy/hit/fracture his core.

As his core becomes more exposed throughout the game, he engages more with his sword/spirit abilities, unlocking new conduits and therefore more abilities and durability. His attacks also become stronger.
